Amazon Buys Zappos for $920M

Amazon is one of the world's largest online retailers for everything from books to electronics. Zappos is another one of the world's largest online retailers, but more specifically for shoes and clothes. If you think the two are a match made in heaven, you're not the only one: According to TechCrunch, Amazon has just purchased Zappos for a cool $920 million in shares and cash.

Zappos has built a strong reputation among the public for great customer service, stellar prices, and fantastic shipping deals, and thankfully, there are no plans to change that. Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh wrote a letter to his employees saying, "We plan to continue to run Zappos the way we have always run Zappos -- continuing to do what we believe is best for our brand, our culture, and our business." Amazon head honcho Jeff Bezos also had a few words to say the Zappos employees, which you can catch in the video posted above. [From: TechCrunch]

Zappos.com Brings Robots to Online Retail

Zappos.com, online retailer extraordinaire of shoes -- and now gadgets -- recently made headlines for innovative hiring practices. After a week on the job, new employees are given the chance to leave the company with a $1,000 bonus if they feel that Zappos isn't the place for them. The company appears to be looking to the future with its recent hiring decision.

Zappos tapped into the productive capabilities of robots by hiring a fleet of automated warehouse workers to 'man' the stocking and delivery side of the shoe business. They worked with Kiva Systems to install the Kiva Mobile Fulfillment System, which promises to increase speed and efficiency in the Zappos' warehouse. The building is outfitted with a system of movable shelves, or 'pods,' instead of the traditional shelving units.

So how does it work? You log in to Zappos, order your shoes, and a signal is sent via Wi-Fi to the orange bots. Once the message is received, a pod will automatically whip around the warehouse, navigate to the correct pod, pick up your order, and hand it off to a worker to prepare your shiny new kicks for delivery. Zappos Starts Selling Gadgets

Online shoe retailer Zappos launched a newly redesigned home page, featuring several new categories of products. Now you'll find handbags, clothing, sunglasses, and yes even the latest electronics and gadgets among the hundreds of pages of Kenneth Cole boots and Nike running shoes.

The retailer says it's not taking aim at the big boys like Amazon, but that it's merely trying to convince its already sizable customer base to purchase other goods as well. The newly relaunched Web page comes with several navigation improvements. Previously searching for casual mens boots would have turned up almost three dozen pages with a hundred boots on each. The results would include separate entries for the same boot in different colors and sold out products. The cleaned-up and streamlined design makes finding products, be they GPS receivers or a pair of lace-up oxfords, much easier. [Source: Zappos, Via: News.com]
