Johnny Depp Shares His YouTubing With Vanity Fair

Though he is one of the best-looking men in the world, and the representative of everything both cool and weird, it turns out Johnny Depp is into exactly what we here at Switched are into: hanging out and watching the best YouTube videos.

In Vanity Fair's upcoming cover story on Depp, writer Douglas Brinkley and the megastar, despite hanging out on his Bahamian island and motoring around on his private yacht, just sat online. Depp's choice in videos, we are happy to report, is as varied and strange as the actor himself. Including standbys like A Colbert Christmas and Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, he also had some pretty obscure picks:

A Parisian bookstore owner demonstrating a dangerous and potentially very stinky way of trimming his hair:

Foster Brooks toasting Johnny Carson. His inebriation is staged, but Depp appreciates how convincing it is.

We are so glad Johnny shared with us, so we are sharing with you our favorite video of Capt. Jack Sparrow himself, being a really gracious guest with a couple of precocious, Japanese pirate kids.

Mia Farrow Goes on Darfur Hunger Strike, Posts Daily on YouTube

Actress, activist and former Woody Allen flame Mia Farrow is in the ninth day of her hunger strike for Darfur, which she has been chronicling on her own YouTube channel, the L.A. Times reports.

According to the Times, the 64-year-old, noticeably gaunt Farrow has committed to a three-week hunger strike, during which she will consume only water, in order to raise the public's awareness of the estimated 2.7 million refugees in Darfur (a cause she has long championed in her well-known blog). Late last month, according to the AP, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir banished 16 humanitarian aid groups, 13 of which had come from the international community to aid the impoverished, sickly and malnourished refugee communities. On April 21st, the AP reported that the U.N. estimated 300,000 had died since 2003. To put that in perspective, these tragic numbers are tantamount to the entire population of Chicago being left homeless and dying, or the entire city of Pittsburgh being put to death.

Man Delivers Baby With Help of YouTube

Providing further proof that the Internet is not, in fact, "good for nothing," Marc Stephens, a 28-year-old naval engineer from Cornwall, England, watched a quick how-to baby video on YouTube, and successfully delivered his baby daughter, Gabriele. According to the Daily Mirror, this all happened on March 21st, but apparently the Stephens only spilled the details about how the baby actually was born, yesterday morning.

Feeling anxious about his wife going into labor, he decided to check out some birthin' videos. Good timing, because a few hours later, she went into labor (three weeks earlier than expected). The paramedics were on the way, but, with time running short, Stephens was forced to go at it himself.

His wife, Jo, who has three other children, told a slew of British newspapers that of all her four childbirths, this was the one she enjoyed the most.

Video: Model Plane Almost Runs Into Real Plane

Certain people do certain things that they certainly should not do. The person responsible for this awesome video (which we picked up from Gadling) is definitely one of those people.

The CAA (the Australian Version of the FAA) is investigating after a man nearly flew his model plane into a real Virgin Blue jetliner as it landed in western Australia. The man had outfitted the model with a video camera, so there is spectacular footage of the entire idiotic episode. In the video (which is set to the audio of 'Top Gun!'), you see the model plane come to being within approximately 100 feet of the jet, before the jetwash causes the model to crash to the ground.

The CAA is obviously not thrilled by this stunt, and rightfully so. We can only imagine what would have happened if the Jet had sucked the much smaller plane into one of its engines. [From: Gadling.com]

Mom Arrested for Encouraging YouTube Teen Girl Fight

Mom Encourages YouTube Brawl, Gets ArrestedThere are plenty of controversial things on YouTube, not least of which are videos showing fights between minors. We've covered this trend before, and responders to our straw-poll voted overwhelmingly that the videos should be removed from the site. Apparently, there are parents out there who would disagree and some, such as 37-year-old Dawn Morris, who would actually encourage the fighting.

According to police in Champaign County, Illinois, Morris discovered via Facebook that her 15-year-old daughter was planning to fight another teen. Rather than do something to prevent it, Morris actually gathered up neighbors to come watch the brawl and to cheer on her daughter. The fight was captured on video using a camera phone, and then posted to YouTube (the video has since been removed). Police saw the fight, investigated it, and quickly identified the parties involved.

Both teens were charged with aggravated battery and will be making appearances in juvenile court, while Morris, the encouraging mom, was arrested and charged with contributing to the criminal delinquency of a juvenile. Perhaps this will help stem the tide of juvenile violence vids. [From: The News-Gazette.com]

Ponzi Schemes Taking Over YouTube

Pyramid Schemes Taking Over YouTube
Apparently the shame and incredibly long jail sentence facing Bernie Madoff aren't enough to discourage scores of imitators from taking to the Internet and launching their own Ponzi, or pyramid, schemes. According to a report by the Better Business Bureau, YouTube has been flooded with videos from would-be scam artists. According to the report, analysts at the firm TubeMogul have identified nearly 23,000 videos encouraging viewers to sign up for "cash gifting programs" or "gifting clubs" on the video streaming site.

In a pyramid scheme, scammers persuade potential participants to pay money into a program, promising them easy money for each person they, in turn, persuade to join. As more people are enlisted, the money is simply funneled to the top of the pyramid, enriching the scam artist and leaving the victims at the bottom of the pyramid broke and embarrassed.

The YouTube videos in question are often misleading and confusing; many make references to supposed IRS codes that make the "gifting clubs" legal, and some claim to benefit good causes or churches.

Andy Dick's 'House Arrest' Talk Show Debuts on Atom.com

Comedian Andy Dick is great at making people uncomfortable, intentionally or not, and that's what he'll be doing on his new online show, 'House Arrest with Andy Dick.'

The Atom.com "talk show" makes light of Dick's legal trouble, which has him wearing an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet after pleading guilty to misdemeanor drug and battery charges. The episodes are alleged to be taped at his house, where's he's confined by law, and feature celebrity friends stopping by for short interviews that are punctuated by a standard talk show band and awkward interruptions. The first two episodes feature Mo Collins of 'MadTV' and 'Cheaters' host Joey Greco, while this week's guests include Gren Grunberg, Jennifer Coolidge, and Dr. Drew Pinsky, the host of VH1's 'Sober House,' on which Dick appears.

If you can stand Dick, the two five-minute episodes are good for a few laughs, as they play on the uncomfortable behavior for which he's so well known. If you're already sick of his antics, this show will not change your mind. One thing we know is that Atom is certainly taking a risk with it's new tagline, "Andy Dick's Comedy Enabler." Israeli Musician Creates Amazing Music by Remixing YouTube

Israeli Musician Creates Amazing Music by Remixing YouTube

The practice of remixing has been going strong in the music industry for ages, and, over the years, artists like Girl Talk and DJ Shadow have elevated the act to an art form. But, we guarantee you've never seen a remix quite like this before. Artist Kutiman, a funk practitioner from Israel, has created a project called ThruYOU, in which he cunningly weaves a selection of videos from YouTube in a way that will blow your mind.

His favorite targets seem to be videos of people teaching others how to play the guitar, bass, piano, or drums that he splices together to create seven wholly new creations that are universally captivating. However, there's one rather unfortunate side to this story; his site was so popular that he's had to take it offline. The original link, http://thru-you.com/, is now just a rather boring page of text, but his files have been re-hosted elsewhere. You can find some links here, and while the download is large, it's worth it if you can't wait for the real thing to get back online. Regardless, you won't want to miss hearing and seeing this project! [From: ThruYOU]

Inaugural YouTube Symphony Orchestra Finalized

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Post a video demonstrating your musical talents on YouTube, of course. In hopes of being named to the first YouTube Symphony Orchestra, amateur and professional musicians from over 70 countries submitted more than 3,000 videos to be judged by members of professional orchestras including the Berlin, New York and Hong Kong philharmonics. After the pros narrowed the field down to 200 finalists, YouTube viewers voted to ultimately decide the winning participants.

The orchestra, to be conducted by San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas, consists of more than 90 musicians, ranging in age from 17 to 55, from approximately 30 countries. The group will spend three days in April attending master classes and rehearsals leading up to an April 15th performance at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall. Renowned composer Tan Dun, most widely known for his Oscar-winning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" score, created and arranged "Internet Symphony No. 1 Eroica" specifically for the Orchestra to debut at the performance.

We're still awaiting word on the premiere of the YouTube choral ensemble, although we're fairly certain it will not only include that Chocolate Rain guy, but will also, more importantly, feature Rick Astley as conductor. C'mon. Did you honestly think we could make it through a post about YouTube and music without mentioning Rickrolling? [From: AP/Popeater]

Cat Answers Phone...Sneaky!

Cats are often labeled as lazy, manipulative and generally useless by the cat-hating portion of society (dog lovers). We choose to think of them as efficient, evil geniuses obsessed with shiny/noisy objects and sunlight absorption.
Whatever your take on the subject may be, you will no doubt find this video provocative. We assume most of you will use it as evidence in your case for, or against, the eradication of the species. Let the debate begin!

We love cats, even though we are absolutely certain they are planning the demise of human civilization. Seriously, how many calls have you missed for no apparent reason? The cat in this video is obviously utilizing guerilla tactics in an effort to disrupt communication between his/her owner and the outside world. Obviously. [From: BuzzFeed]

"Kittens, Inspired By Kittens" Video Is the New LOLCats

Every time we turn around (literally and figuratively), everyone is talking about a new "funniest video ever." Most of those videos come nowhere close to warranting such lofty praise, but every once in a while a true contender comes along and rears its slightly disturbing, fluffy little head.

This week's nominee for "funniest video ever" is called "Kittens, Inspired by Kittens" (check out the video after the break). It involves a cavity-inducing little girl and a book of, you guessed it, kittens. Basically, she is giving stream-of-consciousness "titles" to each picture from David Gibbon's classic 'Kitttens' picture-book -- it's like a video version of LOLCats, but cuter! This lethal combination leaves us near tears, so we hope you enjoy it. [From: YouTube Via: BoingBoing]

Cell Phones Become Rude Cartoon Characters in New Web Video

Ever wonder what some think your choice of cell phone (or cell phone accessory) says about you? You could ask your friends, or you could just check out this video called "Cell Phone Reunion" that anthropomorphizes today's (and yesterday's) most popular cellies, giving them all distinctive -- and some abrasive -- personalities. We'll let you guess which one plays the role of smug braggart.

Dentist-Drugged YouTube Kid's Dad Talks to the WSJ

Most of you have seen it, and many of you that have are probably still laughing. It's the video of eight-year-old David DeVore's now-famous tirade on the way back from the dentist, after being sedated. Simply put, it is one of the funniest things we have ever seen.

On young David DeVore's ride home from having a tooth pulled, the heavily sedated youngster began spazzing out (while his father filmed). The video was first posted on Facebook, then on YouTube, and has since garnered more than 7 million views since (and inspired the inevitable remix).

Some party-poopers, however, have called the video exploitive ("Don't you see you're exposing your own kid to public humiliation," commented one YouTuber). We obviously assume that these people were born without a funny bone and are hell-bent on destroying everyone else's good time.

Defending himself in an interview with the Wall St Journal, David's dad (also named David), said: "I felt bad doing it but I had tears coming out of my eyes after it was over because it was just hilarious." In the same WSJ piece, young David (who was called in from playing to talk on the phone with the reporter) said he was "excited" about the whole thing.

We at Switched have a very simple message to David Jr. and Sr.: Thank you! [From: Wall Street Journal]

Onion News on Sony's New Piece of S--- Gadget

Sure, the Onion is supposed to be satirical and over the top, but it certainly speaks the truth about trendy gadgets in this profanity-laced video (after the break). The clip, from the Onion News Network, reports on Sony's newest gadget, which nobody needs and doesn't really do much, yet for whatever reason, everybody needs one.

They interview a regular guy outside of an electronics store, who says the gadget has a "whole bunch more memory and megapixels" than all his other "TV s---," so naturally, he needs to get it. The unnamed gadget has "impossible to open packaging" and drives its users crazy by "flashing random words and numbers" and "not coming with the doohickey thing it's supposed to."

What really strikes a chord with us is the "irritating ad campaign" that makes it seem like the next gadget you need to own "if you don't want to feel like a toothless hillbilly living in some hillbilly shack somewhere." You'll probably notice the similarities between that and Storm ads and any new iPod promotion. Check out the video below for yourself to see how much you can relate, and remember, it's chock full of cursing, so don't watch it in public without headphones. [From: The Onion]
