Best Web-Only TV Shows

If the recession is whipping your butt and you are looking for a place to cut costs, may we suggest you lose your cable and hit the Web for some truly original (and darn good) entertainment. If you aren't familiar with watching TV on your computer, you really should remedy that, yourself.

Sure, Hulu, YouTube, and Netflix offer a sizable amount of content that initially premiered on cable or over the broadcast waves, but Web-only content is, increasingly often, just as good as anything you can find on the trusty ol' TV set. These Web series are fresh and, in many cases, uncensored. Fans of 'Arrested Development' and 'Star Trek' will find reasons to rejoice, and 'Lost' aficionados will be able to have more vicarious adventures. You may still have to suffer through some advertisements, but hey, you can't have everything.

Rolling Stone put together a list of their favorite serial Web-only television, and it includes a fascinating fan-made 'Star Trek' series as well as 'The Guild,' an award-winning webisode-based series written by a former cast member of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.'

Many Fall TV Shows to Premiere Online First

Hulu Scores Loads of Premieres
Hulu is sure to generate even more buzz this fall with its sudden flood of series and season premieres, many of which are airing on Hulu before they hit TV. In case you miss the premiere or just don't have a TV, you'll be able to head to Hulu and catch many of the best shows on television, including 'The Office,' 'The Simpsons,' 'Heroes,' and 'House.'

Even more interesting is the shows that will be hitting Hulu first. New series like 'Knight Rider' and 'Chuck' will get a test run on Hulu before hitting the networks, but so will established shows like '30 Rock.'

It's nice to see the networks finally embracing streaming video and Internet distribution. Pretty soon you may not need a TV at all. [From: TechCrunch]

Olympics Opening Ceremonies Now Streaming Live Online

2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies Now StreamingThe 2008 Olympic Games are getting underway right this very moment. Yes, right now, even though your television listings say that all the action kicks off late tonight. You see, Beijing is a full 12-hours ahead of the eastern coast of the U.S., so while you're still sipping your morning cuppa here, thousands of folks are screaming in Bird Nest Stadium for their nation (or nations) of choice.

Thanks to the beauty of the Internet, you can watch along. Justin.tv has the opening ceremonies streaming live right now in a variety of languages. We found Macedonian and a variety of streams in Spanish (like this one from Argentina), and yes, we even found one in English. (Alas, none of it is in HD, but let us know if you find HD streams anywhere).

So, surf over and tune in, but don't get mad at us if you have nothing to watch tonight.

Google and 'Family Guy' Creator Collaborate On Web Cartoons

In case you've been hiding under your television set for the past few years, you know that new media is on its way in, while old media (like the cable streaming through that television you've been hiding underneath) is on its way out.

In September, Seth MacFarlane (the creator of Fox's 'Family Guy'), will unveil a new project called 'Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy.' And while details are scarce as to the Cavalcade's actual content, the platform will be very different: it will appear exclusively on the Internet, thanks to Google.

According to the New York Times, Google will syndicate the program using its AdSense advertising system to thousands of Web sites that are predetermined to be gathering spots for Mr. MacFarlane's target audience (read: young men between 13 and 35 with a penchant for fart humor and talking dogs). And instead of placing a static ad on a Web page, Google will place a 'Cavalcade' video clip.

Advertising will come in either the form of "pre-roll" ads (sit through a this commercial before getting to the video!), or banner ads placed at the bottom of the video clip. MacFarlane will receive a percentage of the ad revenue, which will be delivered in 50 two-minute episodes.

In an interview, McFarlane described the pieces as "animated versions of the one-frame cartoons you might see in The New Yorker, only edgier." [Source: NY Times]
