Taser Releases New Shocking Shotgun

Taser, maker of the controversial "less-lethal" weapon that zaps people with incapacitating levels of electricity (described as torture by the U.N.), has just released its latest tool for taking out the odd student protester and great-grandmother.

The X12 Taser shotgun combines the occasionally lethal fun of electrocuting people with the also occasionally lethal impact of "non-lethal" shotgun rounds. The X12 fires a self-contained, wireless shock cartridge up to 100 feet. It strikes a target with enough force to knock them down, then, as an added bonus, pumps them full of a few thousand volts.

Scientists Shoot Down Malaria-Carrying Mosquitoes with Frickin' Lasers

Seriously, is there anything a laser can't do? A team of mad scientists in Washington have concocted a system that could essentially eliminate malaria-carrying mosquitoes with lasers, and the whole thing can be built from parts sourced on eBay. The so-called mosquito laser is credited to an idea from Lowell Wood, an astrophysicist who worked with Edward Teller, the "architect of the original plan to use lasers to shield America from the rain of Soviet nuclear arms." In theory, at least, the technology could one day be used to draw a laser barrier of sorts around a village. Of course, the trick is to make the lasers powerful enough to smoke the bugs without harming humans -- any of you Earthlings up for a clinical trial or two? [Via eHow]

New iPod touch Application Improves Your Sniper Rifle Accuracy

We're trying... we're trying real hard to cling to our pacifist ways. But damn if the fusion of this US Army M110 Sniper Rifle and mounted iPod touch running the BulletFlight external ballistics calculator (available via the App Store) doesn't make us want to kill. Tap in the variables such as weather conditions, ammunition type, distance to target, and wind speed before exhaling and gently squeezing back on your second amendment right. God bless America.

'Metal Gear Solid' Rubber Band Gun Is Non-Lethal Overkill

When you're caught between the lines of dueling mercenary armies, trapped in a rapidly aging body that doesn't quite react the way it used to, you need a reliable side arm to protect yourself. That was Solid Snake's situation in
'Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots,' his chosen weapon the Silver Wolf pistol, recreated here in as a Japanese fan's stainless steel and rubber band DIY masterpiece. Constructed of numerous cross-drilled plates and featuring both a laser sight and integrated flashlight, the result looks to be impressively accurate and likely quite painful, as you can see for yourself in a video just below. Bonus reloading footage included!

Military to Get Laser Weapons By Year's End

Note: We guarantee there will be no jokes about "freakin' lasers" in this article.

Now that we've got that out of the way, word is that the U.S. military will finally get weapons grade lasers by the end of 2008. No joke, the holy grail of a laser-based weaponry is right around the corner, according to Northrop Grumman, a military contractor. Grumman recently tested an electronic laser system that combines small silicon-based lasers into one more powerful beam, much like the Death Star. 100 kilowatts (kW) is generally considered the threshold for a useful weapons grade laser, and the most recent test only hit 30 kW. Since the weapon is built simply by chaining smaller lasers together,it will be able to quickly scale up its power by the end of the year, according to Grumman.

These new electric lasers have replaced traditional chemical lasers, which are bulky and require noxious gases to generate their high-powered beams. The size and danger of these systems has rendered them impractical for most military situations.

Grumman isn't alone, though. The military also expects to see a laser truck from Boeing and a laser mortar from Raytheon soon. Plus, it just test-fired its aerial Advanced Tactical Laser for the first time. It's only a matter of time before we'll all have ray guns and plasma rifles. [From: Wired]

US Army Turns to Toy Company to Develop New Weapon

We're not quite sure how the pitch session went with this one, but it looks like the US Army was so impressed by toymaker Lund and Company's Hydrogen Fuel Rocket that it decided to recruit the company to build a decidedly more lethal version of it.

The new system, dubbed the Variable Velocity Weapon System, will apparently be able to be switched between lethal and non-lethal modes, and be loaded with rubber bullets, actual bullets, or other projectiles, which are fired by mixing a liquid or gaseous fuel with air in a combustion chamber. What's more, the company says that the technology could be applied to any size weapon from a "handgun to a Howitzer," and it says a demonstration version could be ready in as little as six months, with full production possible within 18 months, pending approval. Israel Developing Robotic Missile Defense System

Israel Working on Robotic Missile Defense SystemThe Israeli government is moving us one step closer to the nightmare future envisioned in 'Terminator' in which completely autonomous weaponry turn against us and put humans on the endangered species list. Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Israel's arms development firm, in conjunction with U.S. defense contractor Raytheon, are developing new interceptor missiles and a targeting system that is aimed at blasting mid- to long-range rockets out of the sky.

The system, code named "Magic Wand", is still about four years out, but the goal is to develop a system that requires minimal human input. Eventually the government hopes that "the envisioned super system [will] be able to generate a level of supreme situational awareness and snap intuitive capabilities that could surpass the very best wartime commanders." In other words, this system will think and operate on its own.

We just hope the Israelis have better luck with their automated system than the South Africans did.

Semi-Automatic Pepper Spray Gun
Tasers and pepper spray are good for warding off an attacker a few short paces away, but what if you'd prefer to keep assailants at more than an arm's reach? Well, that's where the new (and surpsingly fashionable-looking) Avurt IM 5 Launcher comes in.

The weapon launches paint-ball like capsules of pepper spray that explode on impact and cling to your would-be attacker, burning his or her eyes, nose and throat. Unfolding the handle arms the device and activates the built-in laser sight. Point and pull the trigger and you will stop the assailant in his tracks. The magazine holds five rounds and can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger. The launcher comes in four colors, so you can carry a different one everyday to coordinate with your outfit.

The new non-lethal personal defense device is currently available for pre-order from the Avurt website for $299.99.

Russians Build the Ultimate Squirt Gun

Russians Build the Ultimate Squirt Gun

Non-lethal combat is evolving technologically at a much faster rate than traditional ... deadly combat. Bullets, missiles, grenades, mines and the like have been the same for a while now. But non-lethal weaponry keeps finding new techniques for taking down baddies without having to cause hearts to stop beating. With sound wave guns, radio wave weapons, flashlights and beanbags, there are certainly plenty of possibilities. But as a wise man once said, "you can never have too many options."

With that in mind, Russian researchers are now developing an immobilizing but otherwise harmless water cannon. Unlike the fire hose, which gained notoriety as a not-so-civil means of crowd control during America's civil rights struggle, the Russian water cannon operates on a different principle, firing smaller amounts of water at a great speed.

The blast of water hits with the same impact as a beanbag round, but without the same chances of causing bodily harm. Broken ribs, and puncture wounds are far less likely if not impossible with a blast of liquid. The water also spreads out as it leaves the barrel, providing a wider impact area. Additionally, the only requirements to fire it are water (obviously) and electricity, making ammunition almost unlimited.
