Sharp Unveils World's First Waterproof, Solar-Powered Cell Phone

Sharp Unveils World's First Water-Proof, Solar-Powered Cell Phone
We've seen solar-powered cell phones and waterproof cell phones, but you'd have to combine both in order to truly take advantage of the fast-approaching summer beach season. Thankfully, a new waterproof, solar-powered cell phone from Sharp will save you from disaster after your other half launches it into the ocean when he or she catches you checking out other sexy folks on the beach.

Of course, this could also be a boon for those in developing countries, where electricity is scarce and monsoons are intense. Oh, and for pirates... let's not forget the pirates.

Price and features are currently unknown, although Sharp has claimed that after just ten minutes of charging in the sun, the phone will give you one minute of talk time and two full hours on standby. This world's first should be available in June... just in time for summer. [From: Engadget Mobile]

The Secret Behind Japan's Love of Waterproof Phones

Ever wonder why the Japanese love their waterproof cell phones so much? Well, we didn't, but the folks over at PC Mag did, and investigated the issue at the Fujitsu booth of this year's CTIA show.

Somewhat surprisingly, it apparently all comes down to bathing, according to a Fujistu spokesperson interviewed by PC Mag. The Japanese are serious about their baths -- many take one every night, due largely to their belief in the health benefits of frequent hot baths. Even given their cramped living quarters, their bathtubs are deeper and bigger than American tubs.

Now they've got waterproof television sets, cell phones, cell phones with built-in TV tuners (like the above, from Fujitsu), and just about everything else. Next up: the microwave oven that works in the bath. Brilliant! We'll call it the Funcooker. [From: PCMag, via Textually]

New Nanotech Fabric Is Completely Unwettable

There are some things that technology hasn't been able to fix, and the wetness of water is certainly one of them. But now, there seems to be a solution: a new waterproof material developed by Swiss chemists is 100% water-repellent. So much so that after leaving it soaking in a bucket of water for two months, it emerges completely dry to the touch.

The trick is a layer of silicone nanofilaments inside the fabric, which are highly "chemically hydrophobic" (feel free to apply this term to other, more human situations as well). It's actually similar to how nature does it: the combination of substances and nanostructures is much like that found in the surface of Lotus leaves.

"The combination of the hydrophobic surface chemistry and the nanostructure of the coating results in the super-hydrophobic effect," lead researcher Stefan Seeger told New Scientist. "The water comes to rest on the top of the nanofilaments like a fakir sitting on a bed of nails." Not our first point of reference, but the metaphor works.

Waterproof 70-inch HDTV Perfect for Your Yacht

Not that 70-inch LCD HDTVs are anything new, but a "fully waterproof" one just might be. Have a look at MarineAV's LCD70: a 1080p behemoth that features a 1,500:1 contrast ratio, 600 cd/m2 brightness, 8-millisecond response time, 178-degree viewing angles, a slew of inputs and VESA mount compatibility.

We're told that the panel is actually a Samsung, which leads us to believe that MarineAV simply snapped up a few of these bad boys and added the water protection itself. Worth the £27,995.95 ($54,664) asking price? Depends on your perspective, we'd imagine. [Source: Marine Audio via CNET]

The Water-Proof PC -- for Computing Poolside?

The only problem with summer (other than mosquitoes, droughts, and bad hair days) is the difficulty of computing. Sit inside at your desk, missing out on the beautiful days? Or perhaps fry your genitalia as you sit poolside with a laptop on your lap?

While it's only a concept at this point, the Swim-Rings PC looks like it has some real potential (for the absurdly rich Hollywood agents among you, at least). The concept is, essentially, to build a PC that incorporates itself into your innertube. The fully-functioning PC will purportedly have a GPRS receiver, Bluetooth connectivity, and magnetic charging interface -- all encased in a fully waterproof design. Let's just hope they figure out how to minimize the glare on their 7-inch LCD display.

Oh, and there's a built-in webcam to remind your friends know just how rich you are. Sign Ari Gold up right now. [Source: ShinyShiny]
