Second Google Phone, the HTC Magic, Debuts

Vodafone just scooped planet Earth with the first touchscreen-only Android phone: HTC's Magic. All the specs look to line up with what was rumored, with a 3.2-inch QVGA screen front and center (that resolution might be a typo, HVGA seems more likely), HDSPA, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera (no flash), and a G1-style trackball. Details on pricing and availability will be unveiled for local Vodafone markets as they see fit, but pricing in Spain will be from 99 to 199 Euro, depending on contract.

Initial markets to nab the phone will be UK (due in April), Spain, Germany, France and Italy, with more countries to follow, and the phone will be a timed exclusive with Vodafone. Crazily enough, the phone has a proprietary headphone jack, proving once and for all that HTC doesn't like you, but at least this one will ship with a touchscreen keyboard out of the gate.

Update: We have confirmation that the device is indeed HVGA like the G1 before it, that's a typo on the original press release. More detailed specifications after the break.

Madonna to Debut New Album On Cell Phones

madonna vodafone cell phone

The European mobile carrier Vodafone and Madonna have teamed up to promote the release of her new album, "Hard Candy". Vodafone will release one track a day for download to mobile devices during the week preceding the album's official release date on April 28. The songs will cost about $2 each(.99p), except for the album's first single "4 minutes," which is available now for about $2.50.

Madge is the first pop star to pre-release an album by cell network, and with Vodafone's 200 million customers in 25 markets, we're pretty sure this promo will be effective. Unfortunately, while Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless in America, there have been no similar announcements to distribute the album by cell network in the U.S. Which means hard core American Madonna fans will have to wait online for the inevitable low quality leaks of the new album.

Madonna is no stranger to new forms of distributing music and "Hard Candy" will be the last studio album that the Queen of Pop does under her contract with Warner Music Group. Her new contract with the concert promoter Live Nation will cover future music recordings as well as tours and management of the "Madonna Brand". Looks like Madonna has reinvented herself again, and just in time for her 50th birthday!

T-Mobile Selling $1,500 Unlocked iPhone in Germany

T-Mobile Selling Unlocked iPhone in Germany, for $1,478
Apple struck an exclusive deal with T-Mobile Germany to sell and support the iPhone, similar to the agreement it has with AT&T here in the states. However, locked handsets and exclusive arrangements aren't as easily accepted in the EU. The German branch of competitor Vodafone obtained a court injunction against the deal, claiming that the exclusive arrangement wasn't acceptable under German law.

T-Mobile has responded by deciding to sell the phone unlocked for €999, roughly $1,478. It is the first officially sanctioned unlocked iPhone available, but at such an absurd price, it won't be flying off the shelves (we don't think).

T-Mobile's disingenuous attempt to appease Vodafone and the German government sure isn't going to win any fans. Don't be shocked if this tale gets even uglier.
