Construction Begins on Spaceport America

Spaceport America is officially under construction, and, according to those involved with the project, the world will have its first commercial spaceport by late 2010, or early 2011. This past Friday, Governor Bill Richardson was on hand to break ground in New Mexico for the operational headquarters of Virgin Galactic, and eventually other space tourism and transportation companies.

Virgin CEO Richard Branson expects to be onboard the inaugural flight of WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo within two years. (WhiteKnightTwo is a larger shuttle craft that is designed to essentially carry the piggy-backing SpaceShipTwo to higher altitudes.) Once commercial space flights begin, Virgin will offer its first available seats to the 300 people who have already paid close to $200,000 to get on the waiting list. Each of those space cruises will last two hours and climax with six minutes of zero-gravity, sub-orbital flight. The huge terminal and hangar complex will also feature a 10,000 foot runway -- long enough to handle the world's largest aircraft.

Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo Spaceship Carrier Unveiled

It looks like the Mojave Desert is once again the center of the private space industry, with Richard Branson and crew on hand to unveil Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo spaceship carrier as promised. This craft (only the first of more that are promised) has been named EVE (after Branson's mother) and, with a 140-foot wingspan, it's apparently now officially the largest all carbon-composite aircraft ever made.

Eventually, it'll be used to help carry the the yet-to-be-completed SpaceShipTwo craft in orbit although, as Burt Rutan himself tells Space.com, that's still a little ways off, with him saying that while could be ready to go after just 40 tests flights, they'll likely do a few more than that for good measure. Head on past the break for a few more pics.

Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo Will Take to the Air Later this Year

While much of the attention surrounding Virgin Galactic's race to space tourism has surrounded its SpaceShipTwo, word has come that carrier ship WhiteKnightTwo will rollout in late July, and after some ground tests, take to the skies by September.

With this rollout come some new details about the composite, twin-boom mothership, which Virgin Galactic is selling as an "open architecture" that it is clearly open to pimping for other applications. Says Prez Will Whitehorn, "WhiteKnightTwo is the world's most advanced payload carrier (a plane from which another vehicle/vessel takes off). It has the best fuel efficiency of any aircraft ever built in history. It is the world's first 100% carbon composite aircraft." Virgin Galactic is even looking into using WhiteKnightTwo as a forest fire water bomber with its payload capacity.

Nonetheless, we care because the giant ship that will carry rich people to space at $200,000 a pop is going to be flying by September. Press passes please? [Source: USAToday]

Richard Branson to Officiate First Wedding In Space

Branson May Conduct First Galactic Wedding

If you were ponying up $100,000-per-seat for you and someone special to take a ride on Richard Branson's SpaceShipTwo into the outer atmosphere, chances are it'd be a moment that you'd have a hard time forgetting. That said, some couples are taking things a bit further to make that journey a memorable one. One as-yet-identified couple has plans to get married while out there, and it looks like Branson might just be the man for the job.

Virgin Galactic C.E.O. Branson, who is ordained, has already conducted a wedding while in mid-flight on a Virgin airplane (which was appropriately en-route to Las Vegas). The set of intergalactic nuptials to be exchanged on the upcoming SpaceShipTwo flight will be the first extra-atmospheric wedding. In addition to the nuptial couple, Virgin Galactic advister George Whitesides and his new wife, Loretta Hidalgo will be getting the first honeymoon in space.

So, if you thought your bride-to-be would be impressed with that trip to Acapulco, better think again! [Source: Daily Mail]

Virgin Galactic Shows Off Spaceship Model

At a press conference on Wednesday, a space tourism outfit known as Virgin Galactic showed off models of its privately developed spacecraft that will take paying customers on zero-G, suborbital flights in the next few years. The Associated Press reports that Richard Branson, a British Howard Hughes minus the neuroses, plans on flying customers approximately 62 miles above sea level – just to the lower reaches of space – for a 4.5 minute weightless experience. The craft, dubbed SpaceShip Two, appears to be a cross between a futuristic plane and a space shuttle. White Knight Two, a giant twin-fuselage, four-engine airplane, will carry SpaceShip Two to a high elevation before detaching, leaving the spacecraft to journey alone to its suborbital destination.

In remarks at the press conference, aerospace engineer Burt Rutan, the CEO of the craft's manufacturer, Scaled Composites, stated that SpaceShip Two is about 60% complete, while Virgin Galactic reps indicated that White Knight Two is 70% finished. The next step, the pair said, is to begin test flights that will ensure safety. Such precautions will be closely monitored, as three people died last July in an explosion that occurred while testing SpaceShip Two's propellant system.

Around 200 people have already made reservations to be the first so-called "space tourists." The rich and enthralled have shelled out $200,000 or so to claim their spot on SpaceShip Two, which is constructed out of ultra-light materials. While predecessor SpaceShip One only sat one passenger, the next generation spacecraft will seat many more in a space the AP has likened to the size of a private jet's cabin. Inside, customers will be seated in a virtually supine position to ameliorate the stressful effects the travel will have on their bodies. Once in weightless territory, they will be free to float around the largish, floorless cabin for a few minutes of inner-child satisfaction.

We think the idea of zero-G jaunts for the family is pretty remarkable. Maybe we've read too many futuristic sci-fi novels, but we see this as the first hint of regular, privatized space travel for the average Joe. Well, considering the cost, maybe not the average Joe quite yet.

Either way, this story is really about the human propensity to stand in awe of the stars while doing everything possible to reach them.

Pictures of America's First Spaceport

Spaceport America in Pictures

We're still a number of years away before commercialized space flight becomes a reality. The day will come when you'll be able to write a check and hop on a craft that'll rocket you out of the stratosphere (without having to learn Russian). In the meantime, Virgin Galactic is forging ahead with plans to start construction of Spaceport America next year. As part of the buildup, they've released a gallery of concept art showing what the main hangar will look like.

The base (which looks a little like a cross between the Millennium Falcon and the ship in 'Flight of the Navigator' to us) is located in Sierra County, New Mexico, and will be the first chimerical spaceport in the world. It's estimated to cost $31 million to construct over a period of about two years and offers a view of the runway while enclosing a hangar for maintenance of the various craft that will send passengers into space.

If all goes well, by 2010 passengers will be lifting off here and roaring into space. They'll be quite a bit lighter in the wallet than they were before -- and not just because of the reduction of gravity.
