BlackBerry TiVo App Lets Users Remotely Schedule Shows to Record

Have you ever been stuck late at the office and realized that you'd forgotten to set your TiVo to record the new episode of 'Lost?' If you own a BlackBerry, your heart will no longer sink upon such a revelation. Research and Motion (RIM) and TiVo are today launching TiVo for BlackBerry, available for download on the BlackBerry App World.

The free app features a program guide, which users can browse by category, most popular, or even daily picks. The guide also offers plenty of details about each show, including a description and air time. Of course, the real benefit of the app is the ability to remotely program your TiVo to record your favorite shows.

With New User Tracking Service, TiVo Guns for Nielsen

Today, TiVo will begin selling more than the opportunity to watch your favorite shows when it's more convenient. According to USA Today, the company is trying to hawk viewer information to TV stations and advertisers alike with its fledgling 'Stop/Watch Local Markets' program, hoping to give tracking giant Nielsen a run for its money.

Able to monitor viewers' behavior by the second, TiVo will not only be able to report what viewers are watching at any given moment, but also when the largest number are tuned in and when they fast-forward through recorded programs. While Nielsen's rating system does not offer the same information, the longtime ratings titan does boast a much larger demographic that aims to represent all U.S. TV-watching households. With its scope admittedly limited to households with DVRs, TiVo's analysis within the Stop/Watch Local Markets program would be limited to the company's 3.3 million subscribers, a number that has decreased by 25-percent over the past two years. Fortunately for TiVo's remaining subscribers who would rather not be lumped into these statistics, TiVo does offer the opportunity to abstain from the program on its Web site.

Ads Coming Soon To a Paused TiVo Menu Near You

This should make a lot of people unhappy. According to a press release issued today, TiVo will now offer ad space on its pause menu. Designed to outsmart those who fast-forward through the ads (we assume that's almost everyone at this point, right?) buyers will be able to target viewers of a specific show, or they can opt to "cast a wider net" and advertise within genres or keywords of program descriptions. Even if this means we'll be seeing ads for Shrute Farms beets during 'The Office,' we're still going to hold out hope for the TiVo version of Adblock. [Via Zatz Not Funny]

Tivo and Domino's Offering Pizza Via Your Remote Control

Clearly catering towards the wants, nay, needs of the average American couch potato is TiVo and Domino's Pizza, which have collaborated in order to bring on-sofa pizza ordering to broadband-connected TiVo subscribers. If you'll recall, this service was actually announced for Australia earlier this month, but users in the US of A get the first chance to indulge. 'Course, this is far from the first unorthodox method of ordering pizza, and the lack of a scheduled delivery option is certainly a weak point, but this widget does reveal that all sorts of differentiating applications could eventually find their way to a TiVo box near you. Feel free to give it a spin tonight, but don't blame us if that backlit remote gets dimmed from grease seeping into the crevices.

Netflix 'Watch Instantly' Coming to TiVo

The TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD join the ranks of the Xbox 360, Roku and various Blu-ray players, with Netflix Watch Instantly streaming movies coming to several thousand households today in beta testing, followed by a wide release scheduled for "early December." There won't be any additional fees (other than you TiVo and Netflix subs, of course) leaving the only questions when does high definition video arrive and how do we get in the early tests? Check out the full press release after the break.

TiVO Now Available On Your PC

Rejoice, HTPC (home theater PC) fans -- that partnership between Nero and TiVo has finally borne fruit in the form of Nero's new LiquidTV / TiVo PC DVR package, which brings the TiVo interface and featureset to Windows. The $199 package comes with a year of TiVo service, a Hauppage USB ATSC tuner, an IR receiver, and a Nero-branded TiVo remote, and does exactly as you'd expect -- it's TiVo on your PC.

There are some interesting PC-specific features bolted on the usual kit -- you can navigate using the keyboard and mouse (there are even some nifty contextual menus) and you can export directly to iPod and PSP-compatible .mp4 from within the interface -- but for the most part it's the same TiVo experience you're used to, including streaming shows to and from other TiVos and TiVo PCs.

If you're already running an HTPC setup, you can get the TiVo PC software and a year of service for $99, but your Media Center remote might be a little wonky without a remap, and Nero reps didn't make any promises about CableCARD compatibility apart from "it should work if Windows recognizes it." Obviously we'd like to see that firmed up a bit -- and maybe get some tru2way support in the deal -- but it's definitely a start. Should be available now.

Tivo and Amazon Selling Books, CDs, and More on Your TV

Back in May, TiVo's VP of product marketing got all of our hopes up that the next announcement involving it and Amazon would include HD Unbox content. As you can very clearly see, this is most certainly not the case. Instead, we have the immense pleasure of informing Internet-connected Tivo Series2, Series3 and TiVo HD owners that they can now buy wares from Amazon without leaving their couch.

If browsing through Amazon's extraordinarily huge store with just a remote sounds appealing to you, you're in luck (and mildly insane). Also of note, the new Product Purchase feature will enable advertisers to "market products sold through Amazon on any broadcast or cable network, any TV show, or via any of TiVo's extensive interactive advertising features." In other words, next time you see Dwight using that iconic shredder, you can buy that bad boy right then and there. Take that, Staples. [Source: Tivo via Zatz Not Funny]

YouTube Comes to Tivo

Just in case you weren't already watching enough YouTube at work and on your home computer, on your iPhone, Ocean, etc., or on your Apple TV, now TiVo's getting in on the action as well. Originally announced earlier this year, TiVo users can finally expect the update to pop over your TiVo's regularly scheduled updates over the next couple of weeks. Oh, and our man Dave Zatz shot some video of the new feature and put it up on (where else?) YouTube -- check it out after the break.

Netflix and LG to Bring Digital Movies to your TV

Netflix Teams Up with LG to Bring Digital Movies to your TVAfter leaving Blockbuster in its dust, Netflix is looking to expand its reach beyond the decidedly low-tech DVD rental business. Sure, Netflix.com has its Watch Instantly feature, but that still requires a PC to stream digital content in questionable quality. Cutting out the computer is an important step in seamlessly integrating your digital content and your home theater. To that end Netflix is teaming up with LG to stream movies and TV shows straight to LG's upcoming line of Internet-connected HDTVs and combination Blu-ray / HD DVD players.

The Netflix deal is looking to one-up Amazon's deal with TiVo to stream films from its Unbox service to TiVo set top boxes. Netflix's likely hope is that it can ultimately ditch those costly red envelopes.

TiVo Adding Rhapsody Music Service

TiVo Adding Music Through Rhapsody

TiVo and Real announced a partnership yesterday that brings the popular Rhapsody service and its over four million songs to your TV (or, preferably, your TV that's connected to a home theater system). For $13 - $15 a month, you get access to the award-winning Rhapsody subscription service, which lets you "rent" any of its four million songs as long as you keep paying the monthly fee.

TiVo has been losing subscribers to the DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) offered by cable and satellite companies. TiVo is trying to convince consumers that its recorders are more than just DVRs, by offering extras like music from Rhapsody and downloadable movies from Amazon's Unbox movie service. These are cool services and extras, but unless you've got a sweet home theater setup with multiple speakers, do you really wants to listen to music on your TV?

Cheaper TiVo HD Out Now

Cheaper TiVo HD Available

That rumored budget HD TiVo box we discussed earlier, it's here! And carrying the moniker TiVo HD, it ditches the previous naming scheme of 'TiVo Series X.' It seems the previously-reported specs, and even the photo, turned out to be accurate.

Here are some of the features the entry-level Tivo HD will lack:

  • No OLED
  • No fancy remote
  • No THX

What do these feature omissions mean? For most people, not much. The lack of OLED simply means you won't get an on-console read-out of whatever the Tivo is recording unless you have your TV on -- a cosmetic advantage at best. The fancy remote is really just a glorified regular remote (besides, you'll probably be using a universal remote, anyway). Now, the lack of THX can be a bummer for those who have compatible, high-end A/V receivers or sound systems, but chances are that most non-audiophiles won't notice the difference.

The box does come with dual Cable Card slots, with M Card support, which allows the use of two tuners with one card (great feature). The box also includes an ATSC tuner for watching digital broadcasts and an analog NTSC tuner, in case you're buying a TiVo for your 10-year-old tube. TiVoToGo, and downloading Amazon.com movies and TV shows, among other Internet offerings, are also supported.

Now, if only Tivo could get its fantastic interface to scroll faster through the 200-plus channels most satellite and cable companies offer, it would have a real winner. (We hate to say it, but the otherwise glitchy DVR boxes from your cable company do a better job of quickly scrolling through channels.)

CBS Eye-lert Tells You When TV Shows Run Late

CBS Eye-lert Tells You When TV Shows Run LateIf you're not watching TV with a DVR or Tivo or the like, you're missing out on, well, a lot of useless but entertaining TV programming that you could be watching at your leisure. But despite all the joys and convenience of time-shifted viewing, Tivo and DVRs still have one big challenge: tardy sporting events. Fans of prime-time Sunday television dread the beginning of the football season because late games are always messing up their recordings,.

But come this Fall, there may be a solution, courtesy of CBS. The network is launching a new service it calls "Eye-lert" that enables you to receive real-time programming updates.

Just about every channel will e-mail you what's on tonight, but CBS goes the extra step of sending an e-mail or text message when a given program is running late, whether it's because of an overtime-laden sporting event or major world news (you know, Paris Hilton getting out of jail and the like).

Of course, if you're not home and you can't get to your DVR (or to a Web-connected computer so you can update your DVR), you won't get much out of these alerts, but at least it won't be a surprise when your recording of the latest 'Ghost Whisperer' episode cuts out right before the misty-eyed conclusion.

Budget-Priced HD TiVo Specs Revealed?

TiVo Series 3 Lite Revealed
That TiVo Series 3 box sure is tempting ... until you see the price. At $800, it's no wonder TiVo units aren't moving as briskly as they once did. Thankfully, the company is finally offering an HD DVR at a much more reasonable price.

Rumor has it, the Series 3 Lite will run consumers only $299. TiVo is keeping the price down by dropping some of the more extravagant features, such as the programmable remote, the OLED display and THX certification. It also ditches the dual encoders for a two in one model.

This certainly seems like a more reasonable option if you want your TiVo fix and don't have tons of cash to burn, though there's no word yet when this model will be released.

Transfer Your TiVo Lifetime Service

Transfer Your TiVo Lifetime Service
Remember the days when you could pick up a TiVo and pay a high, but reasonable fee for a lifetime of service? Remember when they put the squash on that with the Series 3? It was a sad day for people everywhere who didn't want to be stuck with whatever crappy box the cable company threw at them.

TiVo has felt your pain and is offering, for a limited time only, to transfer a lifetime service contract from a Series 1 box to an 80 hour dual tuner Series 2 box for $299. Sure it's no HD-serving, CableCARD-ready Series 3, but if you're still stuck with that first TiVo box, now is your chance for a reasonable upgrade and a shot to keep your lifetime service agreement. Only subscribers that activated before June 15, 2003 are eligible, and the offer expires on July 23rd.

Though you'll have to ask yourself: Will you still be watching standard definition two or three years from now?

Tivo's New Tool Searches By Any Word

Announced back in November, Tivo's Universal Swivel Search feature for the Series 2 and Series 3 DVR boxes is finally available (or at least will be over the next six weeks in a gradual roll-out). Unlike the current search and recommendation feature of Tivo, which is limited to keyword- and title- searches on Tivo's databases, the Universal Swivel Search allows subscribers to search based on actors, subject matter, and fan suggestions -- pretty much any word. The search then seeks out programming related to that word from the traditional Tivo program guide, Amazon Unbox, and around 14 other sites and services that offer downloadable video, including CNET and the New York Times

A Tivo representative says that the new system is also easily expandable: "We want to add more information about the shows, background about the actors, even episode guides."

We're big fans of Tivo -- it's certainly got the smoothest controls and onscreen interface of any DVR and beats those of most cable systems hands-down. Thank goodness at least two cable providers -- Cox and Comcast -- are working on incorporating the Tivo software into their cable boxes in the coming months.
