Oprah's BlackBerry Eats Her Homework

Despite Oprah's attempts to prove her technical cognizance, including her recent foray into Twitter, the media mogul apparently still needs some gadget aid. Tasked with writing a tribute to First Lady Michelle Obama for Time Magazine's Time 100 list, Oprah recently told a crowd of reporters gathered at New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center that she initially wrote the piece on her BlackBerry. Apparently, she accidentally deleted the inspirational homage and was forced to completely restart.

Time Unveils Its Best Inventions of 2008 List

Best Inventions of 2008
Every year Time Magazine wraps up the year in science and technology with its list of the top inventions of the year. Last year it was the iPhone that topped the list, beating out host of more useful and, arguably, more important innovations.

This year, the Retail DNA Test (pictured above) beat out several electric cars (the Tesla Roadster, Chevy Volt, and Aptera Electric Car) as well as many other inventions we've cover here on this very site. Including the spy-centric social networking site, the Obama campaign, and space-based Internet.

The strangest entry however is clearly Dimitrij Ovtcharov and his odd-ball ping-pong serve on display at this year's Olympics.

You can check out the full list at Time's Web site, but we've created a little gallery below with some of our favorite tech-specific items on the list. [From: Time]

'Halo 3' Tops Time's Video Game of the Year List

Halo 3 Tops Time's Video Game of the Year List
We're not sure how much of an authority on gaming Time magazine is, but given that it's a respected news outlet, we think it carries a certain amount of weight when it says that 'Halo 3' is the best game of the year.

"In one of the greatest years video gaming has ever seen, 'Halo 3' is the very best of the bunch," says Time's Lev Grossman, who thought the latest installment of the third-person shooter was so good that it beat out other media and fan favorites -- including 'BioShock,' 'Rockband,' and 'Super Mario Galaxy' -- for the top slot on the list.

iPhone Named Time's "Invention of the Year"

iPhone Named 'Invention of the Year'Ahh, the iPhone. Winner of hearts, creator of long lines, and possible media brainwasher. If you don't believe that last point, take a look a this: 'Time Magazine' has made the iPhone its "Invention Of The Year".

'Time' claimed its number one reason for selecting the iconic touch-screen mobile was because "it's pretty," despite the iPhone really being nothing more than a muted black slab with a chrome back and a front typically covered in smudges. This apparently was enough to beat out other, seemingly more important inventions, like a deployable shield that could save the lives of helicopter pilots, and an inflatable antenna that could help bring connectivity to otherwise inaccessible places.

But let's remember that 'Time' doesn't always make the most seemingly logical choices when naming its "Of The Year" awards, since the magazine seems to generally rely on the person or product that made the most noise in the media rather than the thing that actually had the most impact in our lives. And, when this award is looked at from that perspective, it's hard to think of any other invention that wooed the hearts of TV pundits and tech scribes everywhere -- whether rightly or wrongly.
