Cheap and Easy: Online Therapy for Insomnia

Insomnia and the Internet seem to be good bedfellows; just ask anyone browsing the 'tubes at 3 a.m. But researchers at the University of Virginia Health System have decided to combine the restlessness of insomniacs and the accessibility of the Web, creating an online program that gives advice and plays games with people who have trouble sleeping.

Based on the assumption that cognitive therapy can help those with sleep disorders, Sleep Healthy Using the Internet (or, cleverly, SHUTi) helps users to keep a sleep diary and suggests specific bedtimes, trying to give specific instructions per sufferer. Co-author Frances Thorndike told Fox News, "This is a very interactive, tailored, personalized program." Out of the 45 individuals participating in a study of the program's efficacy, the 22 that used the program slept (and stayed sleeping, six months later) better than the 23 members of the control group.

Guitarist Makes Use of 'Bionic Hand' to Regain Abilities

After suffering a stroke in a hotel room following a US tour with his band, the Long Blondes, guitarist Dorian Cox was left paralyzed down the right side of his body. Even simple movements were made impossible, let alone the ability to play his guitar.

Now he's undergoing neurological physiotherapy, which includes training sessions with a mechanical glove called SaeboFlex, which benefits patients by supporting their wrists and helping them grasp and release objects. Like, you know, a guitar. While there are no promises that he'll be able to play guitar again, he's on the road to recovery, and rocking.

"It's a fantastic service," Cox told the Telegraph. "It's helping tremendously and I think it can work wonders for me and others -- it's almost like a gym for my hand." We've had that thought about other things. Like, you know, beer cans.

Okay, now we really feel lazy. [From: The Telegraph]

New Mobile Service Offers Therapy Sessions Via Cell Phone

With all the mobile apps available out there, it was probably inevitable that one offering therapy would come along in this day and age. Seriously, there's a free program called My Mobile Guru that offers downloadable recordings from therapist Gary Siva for a small fee.

Available only in the UK, users access the sessions by downloading the app and then purchasing the recordings for use on their computer or phone. There are a range of topics to choose from, including "I'm being bullied at work," "Am I an alcoholic?" and "I have just been diagnosed with cancer," and each offer 5-12 minutes of help from Siva.

The therapist says the reason this works so well is because techniques to help psych patients are often generic, no matter the symptoms. A member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy disagrees, citing that the interaction and intimacy between a patient and therapist is often what makes treatment work. "You can't have a relationship with a mobile phone download," he says. But what if it's on an iPhone? Those things are magic. [From: Guardian.co.uk via Textually.org]
