Money Can't Buy Love, Sure Isn't Buying 'The Beatles: Rock Band'

When it comes to moving video game units, the Fab Four haven't quite lived up to the hype. The September sales numbers from tracking firm NPD Group have arrived, and 'The Beatles: Rock Band' didn't sell as well as predicted. According to USA Today, the game, which released to much hype on September 9th, sold 595,000 copies across all platforms -- about 400,000 copies less than what analysts had predicted.

Still, that doesn't mean the game is a slouch. Those sales were enough to place 'The Beatles: Rock Band' at number five on the Xbox 360 charts (254,000 sold), and number 10 on the Wii charts (208,600). Analyst Jesse Divnich of Electronic Entertainment Design and Research says he expects those numbers to only increase in the future. "I have no doubts we will see a resurgence in sales during the holiday months," he says. Plus, the game still outsold its chief rival, 'Guitar Hero 5.'

Google Confirms Lennon: Beatles Are More Popular Than Jesus

It only took 40 years, but it seems that John Lennon's 1966 comment that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus has actually been statistically validated. According to the Telegraph, data from Google trends, a site which determines Google's most popular search terms, indicated that in early September the number of 'Beatles' queries rocketed past those for 'Jesus.'

That surge in interest unsurprisingly coincided with the release of digitally remastered Beatles albums and the highly anticipated sale of 'The Beatles: Rock Band' video game. The Beatles Googlemania seems to have subsided, though, since Jesus has apparently regained His spot ahead of the Fab Four. Hopefully, the band's Google ascension won't lead to a McCarthyistic backlash of 1966 proportions. Since you can't really have a Google burning, it would be a terrible waste if people were to start chunking their expensive computers and video games onto Beatles bonfires. [From: The Telegraph]

Is 'The Beatles: Rock Band' Worth the Hype?

Hype Check
:

'The Beatles: Rock Band' (MTV Games/Harmonix)

What it is: A little band called The Beatles has joined forces with a little game called 'Rock Band' to create what is arguably the most highly anticipated music game to date. It includes 45 songs by the seminal British band, and a full-on visual overhaul to depict the Beatles' members and style. The game comes either bundled with Beatles-themed instrument controllers, or as a standalone game that can be played with any 'Rock Band'-compatible instruments.

Why it's different: You may not have noticed, but the Beatles' back catalog has never been released digitally -- no iTunes Store, no Amazon Music Store. And, of course, no Beatles song has ever been featured in a music game -- neither 'Rock Band,' nor 'Guitar Hero.' So, it's something of a coup that MTV and Harmonix (the game's publisher and developer, respectively), have scored approval to Rock-Band-ify the Fab Four's back catalog. The game was developed with creative input from Apple Corps (the Beatles' label), as well as with that of surviving band members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Even the gameplay, though fundamentally the same as prior versions of 'Rock Band,' includes some new ideas, the three-part vocal harmony system being the most significant.

The Beatles Come to 'Rock Band,' Instruments and All

Do you love The Beatles? Do you love 'Rock Band?' Are you ready to totally lose it? If you said yes, that's good -- because MTV Games and Harmonix have just announced a partnership with Apple Corps, Ltd. to bring the band's music and instruments to the 'Rock Band' universe. According to the PR, the game (which apparently lets you do all kinds of awesome Beatles-related rocking) will also premiere with a set of new hardware "modeled after instruments used by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr throughout their career." Right now they've just got a holder page up with a launch date of September 9th, but as soon as we get our eyes on the gear, we'll let you know.

Beatles Collector's Box Includes Limited Edition 120GB iPod Classic

Listen up, Ringo Beatles fans -- your holiday gift has just been located, and it's on aisle 17 in Bloomingdale's. The somewhat janky limited edition collector's box is a dream come true for fanatics of the Fab Four, packing 13 original Beatles' CDs, an engraved guitar pick, two masters and the "Love" CD -- none of which are available via the iTunes Music Store, mind you. Just 2,500 of the $795 sets are available, but -- humorously enough -- you'll be stuck ripping and transferring every last disc onto your individually numbered, etched-with-a-Beatles-logo 120GB iPod classic. Ah well, at least this scenario lets you choose your own bitrate, right?

Beatles Video Game Coming Soon?

You still can't buy their music on iTunes, but The Beatles soon may be coming to a video game near you.

The Financial Times is reporting that representatives of Apple Corps., the company the oversees The Beatles' business interests, have been in talks with both MTV Games (maker of Rock Band) and Activision (whose Guitar Hero is all the rage among video gamers these days). Which company they're more likely to choose to make a game is unknown.

While The Beatles have been slow to to come to new technologies (it was quite a while before the band's catalog was released first released on CD), the remaining members of the band (Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr) recently began exploring new avenues to get their sound out to the masses. For example, some Beatles tunes have been used on 'American Idol' and the Cirque du Soleil show "Love" in Las Vegas has been a hit with fans.

Word is a deal could be in the making within the next few weeks.

What will the game be like? (We would like to see a first-person 'Yellow Submarine' adventure. To visit a walrus. And an octopus' garden.) [Source: PaidContent and Joystiq.]

The Beatles (Finally) Coming to iTunes

Full Beatles Catalog Coming to iTunesEnjoyed by (likely) billions of people worldwide, the Beatles are so popular, they've even had their songs rocketed off into space. Despite the group's global popularity, none of its albums have ever shown up on iTunes, due, unfortunately, to a bit of a legal tiff between Apple, the dudes behind iTunes, and Apple, the group's record label.

Well, all the parties involved -- namely, Paul McCartney and Apple (computer) -- have finally settled their differences and the Beatles invasion of iTunes is set to begin. McCartney indicated last year that he was working on the deal, even saying it would happen in 2008. Indeed it has happened, and it's apparently setting Apple (the computer guys) back $400 million, which will be distributed across all the members of the Fab Four (including the estates of the dearly departed ones), plus Apple (the music recording guys) and, of course, Michael Jackson, who does indeed own the publishing rights to many Beatles songs.

There's been no specific mention of exactly when the albums will show up online, but it shouldn't take long.
