Andy Roddick Lambasts US Open Over Twitter Clamp-Down

As is the case with many other sports, tennis is struggling to get hold of Twitter, the microblogging phenom, and understand just how to regulate it. At this year's U.S. Open, it appears the tweets have hit the fan. Andy Roddick, for one, isn't too happy about it, either.

According to the Associated Press, Roddick has been using Twitter to publicly voice his displeasure over a number of signs that have been hanging around the U.S. Open facilities, notifying players that tweeting certain information could violate anti-corruption rules. "However popular [Twitter] is," the Tennis Integrity Unit's notifications read, "it is important to warn you of some of the dangers posed by Twittering as it relates to the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program Rules." Roddick, doing his best John McEnroe, gave a 140-character-or-less middle finger to the whole business: "i think its lame the US Open is trying to regulate our tweeting.. i understand the on-court issue but not sure they can tell us if we can," he tweeted.

Andy Roddick and Serena Williams Take Tennis To Twitter

Tennis star Andy Roddick, known for having the fastest serve in the world, has been showing his game off the court, too, via Twitter.

Since tennis stars are unhindered by team owners, head coaches and the like, Twitter is running rampant on and off the court, according to The New York Times. Roddick might not be the sport's darling he once was, but he's certainly tennis' tweeting phenom -- microblogging himself into a friendly derriere competition with Serena Williams and making bathroom humor with Justin Gimelstob. For his part, Gimelstob has proved Twitter-savvy, too. While players aren't allowed to have cell phones on the court, Gimelstob bypassed the rules during the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships by handing notes to a ball girl who would then run them to a friend that tweeted the messages.

Maria Sharapova Models Cell Phone-Enabled 'Light Up' Dress

Just yesterday, Maria Sharapova, a tennis star known for her beauty as well as her overhand, donned a dress that really lit up the room -- whenever her cell phone rang, that is.

Posed in the display window of London's upscale department store Liberty, the former Wimbledon champion and current ambassador to Sony Ericsson modeled the high-tech prototype, which connects to the wearer's cell phone via Bluetooth technology and lights up when the phone rings.

Georgie Davies, a student at London College of Fashion, designed the knee-length, short-sleeve dress as part of a school project exploring the fusion of technology and fashion, according to PR-Inside. On her inspiration for the dress, Davies told Reuters, "When you're in a pub or a bar, you can never, ever hear your phone."

Tennis Star Boris Becker Dumped by Text Message

boris becker break up text message

German tennis player Boris Becker, who has won Wimbledon three times, was broken up with via text message last month, says Textually.org.

Becker's 25-year-old ex-fiancee, Sandy Meyer-Woelden, apparently broke off her wedding with the 40-year-old tennis champ via a string of five text messages. Becker explained:

I suddenly got an SMS from Sandy... saying that this was it, that this was over. To make sure how serious she was she sent me five others saying the same thing. I was completely surprised.

Those texts, Becker told reporters, "trampled on my soul."

If anybody sees her, please inform Ms. Meyer-Woelden that her break up methods are in clear conflict with our fundamental digital dating guidelines. [From: Textually]

Would you ever break up with someone via text message?

We braved packed subways and hordes of polo shirts, ankle-length white tube socks and visors to check out the US Open in New York last week (thanks to Olympus, which invited us to test out a couple of its new digital cameras at the event. The Future of Tennis, According to Lacoste

Lacoste-Future-Tennis-crouch.jpg

How would we describe Lacoste's vision of the future of tennis? Hmmm. Here goes...

Imagine your favorite tennis player. Now toss in a pinch of 'Robocop,' a dash of P Diddy's white party, and a whole bunch of 'Tron.' Mix this all together and you will start to have an idea of what Lacoste has cooked up.

Lacoste's vision, set 75 years in the future (in honor of Lacoste's 75th-anniversary) is a technopile's dream. It is also, generally speaking, just plain cool. The futuristic player prototype wears motorcycle-racing-inspired boots, body armor, and wields a retractable laser green racquet. Sweet. All of the aforementioned gear is predominantly white (a vintage Lacoste touch). This description gives you an idea of what to expect, but you truly need to experience the video of said prototype running and diving around like Pete Sampras on crack to truly appreciate this marriage of sport and technology.

Is this the future of tennis? We hope so. And we haven't even seen the ladies' outfits yet. [Source: DVICE].
