14-Year-Old Discovers Rare Supernova

If nine-year-olds can work for Microsoft and become feared professional gamers, why can't a 14-year-old leave her mark on the world of astronomy? Oh, wait, she can -- as proven by Caroline Moore, a student from upstate New York who discovered an exploding star that occurred in a galaxy roughly 70 million light years away.

All the way back in November, Caroline spotted the faint glow in the sky with nothing more than a low-powered telescope. Word got out and after months of monitoring at some of the most advanced installations in the world, astronomers decided that the explosion was a curiously small supernova.

Implantable Telescope Lens Could Help Those With Failing Vision

The idea of a telescope fused directly into your eye may sound like a dream come true for impromptu stargazers, but the intent here is not for ocular astronomy. Rather, it's to help those suffering from age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. This condition results in the deterioration of eyesight (much like the deterioration of cashflow in the other AMD), creating a large blind spot in the center of the field of vision. VisionCare's 4mm implantable telescope is intended to re-focus an image onto an undamaged part of the retina of one eye using either 2.2 or 3X magnification, giving patients the ability see directly ahead while leaving the other as it was to provide peripheral vision.

It's a rather more simple solution than others we've seen, which is perhaps why it's already completed a Phase II/III clinical trial, and the FDA is recommending it be approved for use. We are too, if only so that we'll have more opportunities to use that 'Six Million Dollar Man' soundboard we keep bookmarked -- that bionic jump never gets old.

Zoom on Your iPhone 3G with Brando's 'Telescope' Lens

We've seen these zoom lens add-ons before. Now Brando's slapped together this 6x "Telescope" for the iPhone 3G -- a phone not exactly revered for its image quality. Just snap the unit to the back of the iPhone 3G and get to work. How good is it? About as bad as the $19 worth of optics within. Seriously, 19 bucks and available now. [From: Brando]

Tiny Telescope

Tiny Telescope
Instead of TiVo-ing a few episodes of Discovery's 'Planet Earth' series and calling yourself a nature lover, get out there and experience it for yourself! Enhance your live-action viewing pleasure with the diminutive Makroskop MS 82x5 from MINOX, which pulls double duty as both a telescope and microscope. In telescope mode, the $230 water-proof handheld wonder boasts a field of view of 375 feet. With just a turn of the lens, the unit becomes a microscope capable of 8X magnification.

When zookeepers eventually chase you out of the monkey cage, rest assured that the scope's rugged, rubberized exterior will protect it from damage should you drop it while running.

A Buyer's Guide to Stargazing

TelescopeIf you're into the type of stargazing that requires looking at the heavens and not the latest copy of the Daily News, you probably know that astronomy ranks right up there with boating as one of the most potentially expensive hobbies around. Given that cost, if you're just getting started you might have a hard time moving past the sticker shock to find the right equipment. Are you looking for something that will let you take pictures of the stars? Something that's idiot-proof and portable, or perhaps something that a little more powerful but also a little more complicated? If you're not sure, check out Gizmo Watch's article on the best telescopes for amateur stargazers, which has eight different units ranging from a $400 handheld device that automatically knows what you're looking at thanks to GPS all the way up to a $60,000 unit with a remote-programmable mount.

Most will probably want to go with something like a Celestron CPC Series Telescope, a $2,000 option that is compact and light enough at 40lbs to be much more easily transportable than some of the larger scopes (like the 120lb JMI option) and also offers the same computerized assistance of the handheld ones, but with a lot more power. Now, none of these scopes will give you much street cred in the scientific community if you were, say, hoping to weigh in on the Pluto as a planet debate, but they'll certainly be enough to make the neighborhood kids go "Wow!"
