Facebook Crime and Punishment

As we're sure you're all aware by now, Facebook, when used recklessly, can get you into trouble. Firings, break-ups and general forehead-slapping missteps are no strangers to the social networking site. But Facebook trouble can be much more grave than all that. Look behind the break and catch a glimpse of Facebook's dark criminal underbelly, if you dare.

Man Follows GPS ... to the Edge of a Cliff

A British man successfully tested the boundaries of human stupidity when he followed his car's GPS navigation system to the edge of a cliff.

West Yorkshire Police told the BBC that "officers received a call at 11:18 a.m. on Sunday, March 22 reporting that a BMW was hanging off the edge of a cliff off Bacup Road."

The driver, Robert Jones, had apparently decided not to disobey the navigational system's orders, even when he found himself on a steep, narrow footpath. He eventually stopped when the car hit a fence at the top of the aforementioned cliff.

Jones has been charged with "driving without due care and attention." We would like to charge him with being a moron, but that is (according to the Switched legal team) not a crime. At least the car stopped short, and he now has a lifetime to redeem himself in the eyes of everyone he knows. [From: BBC]

Man Who Tasers Himself Is Compared to Homer Simpson (By His Lawyer)

You know you have acted like an idiot when your own attorney mocks you in open court.

Ricky Hodgkinson, a 26-year-old man from Perton, England was compared by his own legal representative to Homer Simpson after he shot himself with a million-volt taser. Hodgkinson had purchased the illegal taser from a friend and wanted to see if it worked. The only logical thing to do at that point was shoot himself with it (obviously). "He is like the cartoon character Homer Simpson," said Hodgkinson's attorney John Walker, to the court, adding, "It was a silly thing for him to do but he hasn't used it on anyone but himself."

Do you approve of Taser use by police?

Homer moments are pretty easy to recognize; buying a taser for 100 pounds and using it on yourself surely qualifies as one. As for Hodgkinson, he was disappointed because "he had tried it out on himself and was not in much pain at all." Perhaps next time he purchases a deadly weapon, the results will be more satisfactory. Phelps' Bong Pops Up On eBay, Leads to Arrests

In what can only be described as an example of extreme stupidity, the owner of the bong Michael Phelps was photographed enjoying actually attempted to sell the infamous paraphernalia on eBay.

The bong's asking price was as high as $100,000. One can only imagine the wondrous things the owner would have purchased if he had only been able to cash in on his most prized asset. All those dreams, however, went out the window when police confiscated the bong in relation to their ongoing witch hunt (oops, we mean investigation). The owner of the bong did get something in return for his bold move: He got arrested, along with all the other people who were at the party. Police tracked down the owner and other party attendees after seeing the eBay listing.

Smooth move buddy! Better luck next time. [From: CBS]

Jilted Lover Wanted for MySpace Vandalism Photos

Jilted Lover Wanted for MySpace Vandalism PhotosSeriously, people, do you ever learn? Stop posting your revenge on exes online. You didn't learn from the tale of Stephen Hailes, or of the jailed Italian loon. You even ignored the story of a jilted lover being busted on Craigslist.

We have learned from Fox News that Portlyn Miller, of St. Paul Minnesota, is now on the lam after vandalizing the home of an ex-boyfriend and posting photos of it on MySpace. Miller is charged with two felony counts for covering the inside of her ex's house with paint, splashing not just the walls, but his toilet and computer among other things. She then allegedly filled the house with trash, and, in true psycho fashion, impaled a teddy bear on a pole with a knife through its head.

Maybe this will be the last time we'll hear about someone making their hatred for their ex public via the Web. Actually, no. It definitely won't. [From: Fox News]

Thief Takes Own Photo With Stolen Cell Phone, Gets Arrested

Okay, this story is just sad for a number of reasons. First off, an innocent woman who's lost gets her cell phone stolen while stepping out of her car to check a street sign. Not only is she lost, she's deaf. The man guilty of the crime? One Gary Walker from Bond Hill, Ohio.

We know who committed the crime because he's since been found and arrested. The reason for his undoing? He snapped a picture of himself using the stolen phone, and later, when the victim went online and downloaded her data to transfer it to a new phone, Gary's mug popped up. The rest, as they say, is history.

While we're thrilled the thief was caught, and even got some entertainment out of the story, it still boggles our mind how painfully careless crooks can be. Don't get us wrong, we absolutely do not condone crime, nor do we respect these people in the slightest regard. But the inner techies in us just feel a little frustrated some times in the same way that we feel frustrated when we try to watch someone figure out how to use a VCR (well, Blu-ray player now...) for the first time. Anyhow, if you like this story, click here or here or here for more cell phone-related crimes and the crooks that seem to insist on being caught. Or here. [From: Boing Boing]
