Internet TV means plenty of things in the U.S., and usually bears a strange sounding name, like Boxee, Roku or FyreTV. But in developing countries, where the Web hasn't made much headway but households are equipped with televisions, Web-enabled television could be an entirely new browser experience. Vodaphone in South Africa has just announced its Webbox (a name which reminds us of "flummox" or ...

The Criterion Collection, known for its exhaustively detailed and tastefully packaged classic and art house releases, was launched this morning on Hulu Plus with 150 classic films, ranging from Kurosawa and Antonioni to Godard and Truffaut. Even heavy hitters like Chaplin and Bergman probably won't inspire many non-subscribers to throw down the monthly $7.99 fee, but you'll be able to get a taste ...

There's another streaming media box on the market, but you won't be able to find the 'Scooby-Doo' movie on it. Oh, wait -- yes, you can. That is, if you're looking for the version that features Shaggy and Fred double-teaming Velma inside Old Man Withers' haunted dildo factory. Those meddling kids!
But seriously, the FyreTV streaming porno box (NSFW link, obviously) is perhaps the best gift ...

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are coming back to Hulu after a nearly year-long absence. For starving musicians and champagne-sipping mega-stars alike, a strong digital presence is essential. The ways in which artists can present and sell their work online are constantly expanding, changing the face of the music industry in the process. The need for intermediaries between artist and audience, such as record labels and publicists, is a thing of the past.
Enter Bandcamp, a service ...

2010 has been a pretty packed year for tech. Streaming video came into its own with radically improved content choices and affordable living room hardware devices, Android and Apple's iOS dominated the cell phone market, the mobile app markets show no sign of slowing down and the iPad revealed a huge demand for tablets. We here at Switched have taken a look back over the past 12 months and each ...

Is it just us, or did 2010 seem like an abnormally long year? Of course, it was no longer than any other year in history. But, from a tech perspective, at least, this year saw more seismic changes and game-altering developments than any other in recent memory. From Android to Zuckerberg, 'FarmVille' to Foursquare, iPad to iPhone 4, 2010 certainly wasn't short on memorable moments. Here are 15 ...

The poor, issue-laden Boxee Box has had a rough go of it. The streaming media box has been in a seemingly constant war with Hulu, and, after announcing at last year's CES that Boxee would launch using NVIDIA's Tegra 2 hardware, the manufacturer had to switch to an Intel-based solution, since getting the software running on NVIDIA's hardware proved to be too difficult. Despite of all the obstacles ...

OnLive, the on-demand video game service, has addressed many of the issues that initially concerned consumers. With those worries assuaged, and with a physical console on the immediate horizon, OnLive now apparently plans to turn its focus from rectifying problems to diversifying content. You may get impatient with those annoying 15-second ads you have to sit through before watching some online TV shows, but according to new research from Turner Broadcasting, most consumers may be willing to endure even more commercial airtime.
To test consumer feedback, Turner fed different commercial formats to three randomized groups of visitors to the sites tbs.com and tnt.com. One group ...

It was always a matter of when, not if. We know you've been patiently waiting for a streaming-only Netflix plan, and now the time has come. Starting today, customers can sign up for a $7.99-per-month Watch Instantly account. All of the plans that include DVD rentals have been bumped up by $1, so a single-DVD and streaming plan now costs $9.99. Still a good deal. ...

We were already enamored of Hulu Plus, thanks to its portability and $9.99 monthly price. But the benevolent gods of streaming video have slashed the monthly subscription to $7.99, making it even more attractive to people who are getting sick and tired of cable TV shenanigans. In addition to dropping two bucks from the price, Hulu is now offering a one-week free trial for those who are still on ...

Ever wonder why the Netflix app (available for both the iPhone and iPad) isn't available for Android users? According to Netflix, it's because the Android platform isn't secure enough for Hollywood execs.
The fundamental hurdle seems to be the app's Digital Rights Management (DRM) system, and the fact that Netflix hasn't been able to standardize it across all Android devices. This lack of ...

The Boxee Box is finally here! Last night, at an event here in New York City, the Boxee crew celebrated the release of its much-hyped -- and overly delayed -- streaming media box. The booze-soaked event celebrated the launch of the angular box, but also marked the official launch of the new Boxee software, which has finally shed the beta tag.
With version 1.0, Boxee is proclaiming that it's ...
