Extreme Gear for 'Star Trek' Home Makeovers

So, you just shelled out 2,700 big ones to relax in a replica of Captain's Kirk's space throne, but, as you bask in your geeky glory, you abruptly realize that the rest of the apartment is unacceptably barren of other 'Star Trek' accoutrements. Making your own paraphernalia is always an option, but in order to stand out from the hordes of amateur fans, hardcore Trekkies will seek out more realistic and authentic pieces.

To make that expedition a little easier, CNET UK has compiled an encyclopedia of 'Star Trek' gadgets and gizmos so fantastic that they would make Gene Rodenberry envious. Some of the offerings are pitiful, if playful, attempts to capitalize on the devoted fan base (e.g., the cologne and morbid urn), but even the most frugal die-hards would have difficulty dismissing the $1 million 'StarCave' holodeck. The list features a wide assortment of both inexpensive and luxurious devices, so pay attention and you'll no longer have to embarrass yourself, your family, or your pets with those cheap and shameful imitations. Father Spoke Only Klingon to His Infant Son

Cruel Father Spoke Only Klingon to his Infant Son
We're pretty sure that what Minnesota man d'Armond Speers did to his child could easily be defined as cruel and unusual punishment. For the first three years of his son's life, Speers spoke only a foreign language to him as part of a personal experiment in linguistics -- that's the cruel part. The unusual part is that he didn't even speak a real (nonetheless useful) language to him -- he spoke Klingon.

That's right, Speers decided to put his computational linguistics Ph.D. to use by trying to ensure his son would never be able to communicate with anyone outside of the nerdiest members of a Star Trek convention. Worst of all, Speers claims he isn't even a huge 'Star Trek' fan, according to City Pages, a Minneapolis/St. Paul news blog. So was he was doing this just for fun? Apparently so, since Speers grew bored of his experiment after three years when he decided that his son was, "definitely starting to learn it." Now a teenager, his son doesn't speak a word of Klingon, and is able to converse fluently in English, something we're very happy to hear.

'Star Trek' Creator's Vintage Mac Computer Up for Auction

Beginning October 8th, the Profiles in History auction house will be offering a one-of-a-kind item with which one lucky 'Star Trek' fanatic can wholly demonstrate his unconditional love for the show's iconic creator Gene Roddenberry. The item is an "early production Macintosh 128 (#776), which was then upgraded by Apple for Gene to a Macintosh Plus."

According to TUAW, Apple's gift to Roddenberry, with its lovely (and yellowing) old-school beige exterior, is expected to yield $1,000 to $1,200. This might seem somewhat low given the extremism of Trekkies. But then again, the old model won't be very practical for squabbling on 'Star Wars vs. Star Trek' message boards or looking up any of that crazy 'Star Trek' porn. [From: TUAW]

Spock Actor Zach Quinto Wants to Save Arcades

Spock portrayer Zachary Quinto (the adorable reason that girls everywhere enjoyed the new 'Star Trek' movie) recently endeared himself even more to his geek fan base. Joystick in hand, Quinto has decided to support 'Save the Arcade,' a campaign promoted by Stride Gum to keep iconic gamespots across the country from having to shut their doors.

Quinto appeared at the Video West Arcade in Glendale, California to schmooze with employees and gamers, playing the classic games himself. 'Save the Arcade' lets gamers play online games, their points going to their choice of one of four arcades. At the end of the contest, the arcade with the highest score gets $25,000 to cover costs.

How to Handle a Geeklet Girl

Wired.com's Geekdad blog always has great articles about living with tech and obscure pop culture in the 21st century. Last week's article focuses on an oft-stereotyped kind of kid: the female geek. Offering tips on how to support a girl with a penchant for reading and 'Lord of the Rings,' writer Natania Barron attempts to guide parents in guiding their children. "[Even] if you don't get the stuff she reads, reiterate that reading is awesome," she urges.

On the subject of friendships, Barron notes, "Geek girls discover more friends among guys than girls... Good, enduring relationships between girls are important." Written from the perspective of an adult reflecting on her geek childhood, Barron's piece points out strong, fictional, nerdy female characters like 'Girl Genius' Agatha Clay and 'A Wrinkle in Time's' Meg Murry. (We like Hermione and Violet Baudelaire, ourselves.)

Secret History of 'Star Trek' Porn

'Star Trek' characters and story lines have always been easy targets for double entendres and risque jokes. As a result, smut peddlers have been shilling 'Star Trek' sexiness since the '70s. And, tapping into an old stereotype, the chaste and nerdy Trekkies are easy marks for the pimps of the adult film and book industries.

Fittingly, just for all you sex-crazed Spockaholics, the 'Star Trek' sexperts at io9 have composed a historical account of 'Star Trek' porn. They trace the evolution of Trek sexcapades from their meager beginnings as short stories detailing a forbidden love affair between Spock and Captain Kirk, to film adaptations of 'The Next Generation' (with the predictable reference to dispatching a probe to Uranus) and 'Deep Space Nine' (You can figure out their obvious porn titles on your own, you little nymphos.).

No character or vessel is safe from the witty and raunchy pornographers' pen, so, if you've ever wondered what Dr. McCoy or the Starship Enterprise's porn names would be, check out BoingBoing's somewhat sterilized sexual history. Or, if you're over 18 and definitely not at work, check out the original thesis-worthy narrative at io9 [NSFW]. [From: io9 [NSFW], Via: BoingBoing]

High-End 'Star Trek' Chair Sure to Be a Conversation Starter

Attention all Trekkies! If your La-Z-Boy just isn't cutting it, you may want to discover, shall we say, another frontier in furniture. Sorry, we couldn't resist...

Serious Star Trek Fans usually own a variety of the franchise's memorabilia, so it's no surprise that some of the more hardcore are translating their love of the classic show into new home furnishings. Replicas of the Enterprise command chair, inhabited by -- duh -- Captain Kirk, are the ultimate material statement of Trekkie fervor, inspiring some people to construct their own. If you are more consumer than carpenter, Diamond Select Toys offers life-size replicas for $2,700. Sit comfortably and prosper, that's what we always, or never, say. [From: Asylum]

Twitter + Levar Burton = House Fire

Twitter + Levar Burton = House Fire
Look, LeVar Burton and Twitter are both incomprehensibly cool, but part of the beauty of Twitter is that you can do so many other things while using it. So while you're, say, cooking, you can pay attention to the food and exchange messages on Twitter.

Network World blogger Curt Monash didn't realize how easy it was to do other things while sending messages to Mr. Burton on Twitter. So, while Mr. Monash was sitting in front of his PC, twittering away with the former 'Reading Rainbow' and 'Star Trek: the Next Generation' star, a burner on his electric stove melted a plastic cutting board that then dripped into the burner and started a fire, which eventually destroyed a part of the house.

We're sorry to hear about Monash's home, and hope that his insurance covers everything. This is certainly the first case of Twitter being blamed for setting a home ablaze, but the microblogging service has a long way to go if it wants to compete with the likes of PS3 and Xbox (technology that seem to regularly inspire people to violence). CBS and iPhone Counter Hulu With Sulu

A recent Nielsen report revealed that viewership of all video mediums is up, including mobile viewing, which has witnessed the largest statistical jump with an increase of 9-percent since the last quarter. Eager to tap into this market, television networks have delved into the streaming video phenomenon.

Perhaps the most well known (thanks to its Super Bowl ad), Hulu combines the formidable powers of NBC and Fox to distribute programming, but only to computers connected to the Web. Last month, ABC and its parent company Disney announced a deal with Verizon that will offer limited ABC, ESPN, and Disney programming to subscribers of the $15-per-month V-Cast service.

Last week, CBS threw down the gauntlet by going a step further. The network released a new iPhone application for its TV.com site that will play, in their entirety, TV episodes from popular series like 'C.S.I.' and the original 'Star Trek.' Its early-to-the-game YouTube application a breakthrough in its own time, the iPhone will soon offer an unprecedented number of well-known programs through both its cellular and Wi-Fi networks. It appears the other major networks have some catching up to do. [from: NYTimes.com]

Whoopi Goldberg Going Back to Sci-Fi -- on the Web

Whoopi Goldberg is going back to her roots. Her science fiction roots, that is.

The Oscar-winning actress and current host of 'The View' is starring in and producing a new online sci-fi thriller series called 'Stream' on FEARnet. FEARnet is a horror Web site and video-on-demand network. Goldberg had briefly retired as an actress, but the 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' alum saw the chance to reach a new audience in a cutting-edge medium and jumped at the chance.

"The idea that you can be at work and check out a webisode tickles me because that is the future... I can reinvent my way of acting so that I challenge myself and see where it takes me for the second half of my life," she said.

Ashes of Star Trek's James Doohan Destroyed in Rocket Launch

Finely riding that razored edge between tragedy and comedy, the New York Times reports that not only did the SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket lose its three satellites and fail to reach orbit during a recent launch, but it also destroyed the remains of actor James Doohan, best known as the original 'Star Trek's' Chief Engineer "Scotty."

The actor's ashes -- as well as those of over 200 others -- were being carried into orbit by the rocket when complications with the ship's stage separation led to the (assumed) destruction of the craft. This recent mishap puts a sad period on the end of the sentence that already included an earlier loss and eventual recovery of the remains. [Source: New York Times Via Slashdot]

British Army Testing Tech That Makes Tanks and Troops Invisible

So you may be able to earn college credit learning to speak Klingon, and you can order yourself replicas of many bits of Klingon weaponry. But even though you may wish it otherwise, you have to face facts: Klingons are not real. That other bane of the Starfleet's existence, the cloaking shield, isn't real either.

That said, it seems we may be getting closer to invisibility becoming a reality, at least if results from a recent British test are to believed. According the Daily Mail, British forces recently demo'd technology that can "make a vehicle seem to completely disappear."

Unlike the Klingon technology, which is said to form a field that bends light around the ship, the British cloaking technology relies on cameras and projectors to actually project a picture of what's behind the vehicle onto the vehicle itself. The tanks, such as the ones pictured above, are said to have been painted in a highly reflective paint that effectively turns them into big, rumbling movie screens.

In true science-project style, the technology is loosely demonstrated with what looks like a small volleyball in this random video from Japan.

The system is being developed by QnetiQ, which has worked on other random cool tech projects that range from a long-distance solar powered aircraft to a machine that can measure your feet in 3-D. Cloaking apparently is just the company's latest experiment ... at least the latest one that we've been allowed to hear about.

William Shatner to Appear In Next 'Star Trek' Movie

Shatner To Appear in Next 'Star Trek'After the revelation that relative unknown Chris Pine would be taking the role of Captain Kirk in the next 'Star Trek' film, geeks everywhere revolted -- despite having never heard of the guy. But, Trekkies and Trekkers everywhere, put down your keyboards and stop it with the yelling and screaming: It looks like Shatner will indeed be making an appearance in the film.

The next 'Trek' will take the Enterprise crew back to the beginning, to their halcyon days back at Starfleet Academy. It's been reported that Leonard Nimoy will make a guest appearance as Spock as well, meaning the film will probably start with both he and Shatner reminiscing about the old days.

'Hulk' star Eric Bana will be the villain, 'Shawn of the Dead' star Simon Pegg will be Scotty, and 'Heroes' mystery-man Zachary Quinto will be Spock. Beyond these tasty tidbits, not much else is known about the film, which is set to be released in November of 2008.

One thing is for sure, though -- expect Kirk's famous (in the right circles) Kobayashi Maru hacking job to be portrayed on the big screen.
