Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....
Skype has reportedly been embroiled in a lingering legal dispute with BSkyB (part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. family) because "Skype" includes the word "sky," the name of one of Murdoch's networks. There is no word yet, however, if News Corp. plans to go after the Alan Parsons Project in hopes of redubbing its hit to "Eye in ...

A cat fight akin to something seen on '90210' or 'The Hills' has erupted at the App Store, between two companies that offer VoIP Web chatting services. It seems to have started last week, when Israel-based Fring announced a new service that would allow users to video-chat over an iPhone 4's 3G connection instead of Wi-Fi. Fring also decided to temporarily pull Skype from its new iPhone app, citing ...

Not long ago (although it may seem like an eternity for some), kids learned of exotic locations and their inhabitants through handwritten interactions with distant pen pals. That specific reference to a writing implement increasingly loses relevance in today's lexicon, though, so parents may need to consider a modernized adaptation -- perhaps "Skypals" might be more appropriate.
As modern kids ...

Skype 2.0, the latest iPhone (and iPod touch) version of the popular VoIP software, landed on the App Store this weekend, bringing along Skype-to-Skype 3G calls and speed enhancements. No huge surprises here; the upgrade to 2.0 went smoothly, and we had a 3G Skype-to-Skype call up and running a few seconds after opening the app for the first time. The local AT&T connection struggled, but the ...

According to the AP, Skype plans to roll out a beta version of a new group video chat feature, which will let as many as five users talk simultaneously. While the feature won't cost a dime, for right now anyway, you will have to be a Windows user to enjoy it. Skype has said, though, that it will introduce the feature to Mac users later this year. You better get it while you can, too; Neil ...

The Icelandic volcano that froze European air traffic this year may have disrupted vacations and business meetings for anyone traveling within or through the continent, but it certainly didn't keep one British man from marrying his Australian girlfriend... on Skype.

It's no secret that we're big fans of Google Voice here at Switched. But, while it's proven quite useful for archiving voicemails and text messages, we don't enjoy having to be tethered to an existing phone line in order to place and receive calls. When Google snatched up VoIP service Gizmo5 in November, though, we knew it would only be a matter of time before the company launched a full-fledged ...

It looks like Oprah isn't the only one loving on Skype. The service, which allows users to make free calls to other users over the Internet, and to make ridiculously cheap calls to actual phones, just received a major boost thanks to Verizon. The carrier, which you would think might see Skype as something of a competitor, will now be allowing its subscribers to make Skype calls from their ...

Skype, a service which provides free Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls between users, has exploded in popularity, reportedly becoming the world's largest international call provider. Skype is generally considered to be almost impenetrable to hackers, due to its encryption software, but it's now evident that a "wiretap Trojan" virus will allow eavesdroppers to record, and listen to, ...
