CES 2009 Paper-Shred-tacular

CES 2009 Shred-tacular
Last year we had to run all over CES to find paper shredders to satiate our fetish. This year the shredders came to us!

There were probably more paper shredders on the show floor, and don't worry we'll bring them to you, but we couldn't resist a quick stop at the Staples booth that was literally in the center of the press lounge here. Oddly enough, Staples actually put some fairly unique technology in their first line of branded paper shredders.

Each model has V-Track, a technology that automatically straightens out pages as you feed them through, and select models come with titanium coated blades and a sensor that prevents jams by detecting when you've inserted too many pages and refusing to start the motor. And Staples isn't above adding a little flash to the old office standby -- you'll find a blue LED inside the bin, and it makes the shredders look more like custom gaming rigs than lowly pieces of office equipment.

Check out the gallery below for all the shreddy goodness.

Paper Shredder Roundup 2008

Someone here at the Switched has a bit of an obsession, if you hadn't noticed yet. We just can't help but cover every novelty or development in the world of paper shredders. Sadly there was nothing as powerful as this $30,000 shredder on display at CES, but there were a few noteworthy entries into the world of document destruction.

Whether they were pretty, paranoid or just plain weird, they made it to our Class of 2008: Paper Shredders Edition gallery. Check it out.

We sure like our shredders here at Switched. And if your "business trips" are really a little more like "time away with the mistress," then you're really going to like Kinlan's new handheld USB shredder too. Don't just tear up receipts from hotel stays and dinners too romantic to be professional. Simply plug this baby into your laptop's USB port and shred away. The device is roughly 10 inches by three inches and weighs just 12 ounces, allowing it to easily fit in most laptop bags without adding a lot of extra weight. When a USB port isn't available, an AC adapter or four AA batteries can power the unit.

We Love Things That Shred

Spam ShredderContinuing our love of all things that shred, we present 'The Spam Trap'.

Artist Bill Hackleford built 'The Spam Trap' from an aging Pentium II-based PC, printer and shredder. The PC downloads his spam, feeds the senders' information to an online database of spammers, then prints out the e-mails. After the spam is printed, it is fed into a shredder and dumped into a pile of what it really is: garbage.

Artsy-Fartsy Paper Shredder

Paper Shredder
We've learned that people like gadgets that shred things. There's nothing like a wanton act of destruction in the name of productivity and interesting design. In that vein we present you with the Chrono_Shredder. Another design exercise like the Hamster Powered Paper Shredder.

The Chrono_Shredder, from Susanna Hertrich, is a red box that hangs on the wall and holds a daily calendar on a paper roll. The paper roll is fed through the shredder at a constant rate of one day every 24 hours.

The modified shredder has no 'On' or 'Off' button, making it unstoppable, just like time itself.

Pet-Powered Paper Shredder

Hamster Shredder Is your pet hamster just sitting around taking up space? Make the little rodent earn his keep! Using an ingenious implementation of Flintstones technology, the Hamster Shredder uses your little guy's exercise wheel to shred your most confidential documents (plans for world domination, etc.).

Why buy bedding for the furball when he can make his own from your credit card statements? Why scream at a machine when you can blame a living creature for paper jams? Because, sadly, the Hamster Shredder is only a prototype at this time, and not for sale.
