Elmo Live! On Sale Tomorrow for $59.99

After the whole Tickle Me Elmo craze a few years back, you just knew Fisher-Price was going to ride this wave until it simply couldn't stay afloat any longer. Elmo Live!, hailed as the "most innovative and engaging Elmo toy ever," will officially hit store shelves tomorrow (October 14th) for $59.99, though we suspect the first batch will be snapped up in no time flat.

Of course, those of you intent on retaining your sanity probably pre-ordered a few months back, but for everyone else, your battle to get one of this year's hottest holiday gifts starts in under 24 hours. For those wondering what's so special about this fellow, he supposedly tells jokes and makes movements that "give kids the feeling that Elmo is alive in their own homes." Whether that's really a good thing, however, is totally up to you.

Stealthy Carbon Fiber Stiletto Boat Reaches 60 Knots

If you had any urge whatsoever to try to your hand at drug trafficking over water while these "weird" economic times sort themselves out, uh, you may want to reevaluate your options. The ever-so-stealthy Stiletto has come to life after tracking down a remarkably quick drug-running boat near Florida; the bad guys were cruising at 42 knots, but that comic book-esque thing you're undoubtedly peering at above can reach speeds of up to 60 knots. The double-M-shaped hull enables it to navigate in extraordinarily shallow waters without trouble, and a plethora of sensors and radars give it all the power it needs to track down goons. Oddly enough, it's having a somewhat difficult time finding a government agency to truly call home, but if it continues to keep the coke out of our seas, we'd say it'll win over some hearts soon enough. The Rovio -- one of WowWee's finest if we should say so ourselves -- is finally ready to roam around domiciles and keep baddies at bay. First announced (and spotted) at CES 2008, this long-awaited robotic sentry is up for pre-order right now, and it comes packing a 640 x 480 Webcam to stream back live video in MPEG4 format. Furthermore, it can snap stills, head out on a customized patrol route and avoid obstacles with its infrared sensor. Get ready -- this sheriff's rolling into your town next Friday for $299.95.

Japanese Firms to Propel Cargo Ship Via Solar Panels

First things first -- when we say "partially" propel, we mean partially. Nippon Yusen and energy distributor Nippon Oil are teaming up to spend around $1.37 million in order to equip a car-hauling cargo ship with 328 solar panels. Rather than just provide energy for the crew's on board entertainment system, it will be the first solar installation to actually produce a smidgen of power for the boat's engine.

If successful, the panels would provide 0.2% of the ship's energy consumption for propulsion, and they're hoping to raise that to a whopping 1% by 2010. Gives a whole new meaning to "baby steps," huh? [From: PhysOrg]

Low(er) Cost Commercial Space Flight Prototype Revealed

SpaceShipOne from Scaled Composites was the first, the first commercial ship to probe the (sub-orbital) heavens. It's successor, SpaceshipTwo has been revealed and, for just $200,000 each, you and five friends can sign up for a two and a half hour trip waaay up there. It'd be the trip of a lifetime, but at a cost many would have to spend their entire lives saving for. Now another company, XCOR, has unveiled plans for smaller, quicker, and (presumably) cheaper flights by 2010.

The ship is called the Lynx and seats just two, one of whom has to be the pilot, of course. This means that you won't be able to take any friends along, but the relative light weight and economy of the ship means just a 25-minute round-trip to the outer limits and the potential for multiple flights in a single day. No specific word on cost just yet, but if it's not considerably more affordable than the offerings from Scaled Composites we can't see this one getting off the ground.
