Sega Releases Plant That Nods to Your Voice

Move over Aibo, take a seat, creepy humanoid robot doll, Pekoppa has arrived! Sega's eagerly anticipated nodding robotic plant is finally here, at least in Japan, though we expect that it will soon be turning up in children's bedrooms and on the window sills of retirement homes stateside, delighting the immature and the elderly with its fantastic capacity to acknowledge that it is listening/ Garden-variety sound sensors, presumably, enable the doodad to move its leaves as you sing or speak to it.

Only in the high pressure society of Japan, where 1 in 5 people have considered suicide, would a robotic plant that nods be billed as a good listener (we're basing this claim on a translation of the promo song in this video). In fact, we'd like to say that if you're talking to a robotic plant because that's the only thing that will listen to your problems, you might need to seek more professional help. [From OhGizmo!]

New Add-Ons Turn Your Wii Controllers into Musical Maracas

'Samba de Amigo' is barreling towards the Wii, and we all understand that it'll be a lot less exciting without the Wii Maracas. Thanks to Amazon's quick trigger finger, we now know that Sega's Wiimote accessories will go for $14.99 per pair, and if all goes to plan, they'll be shipping out on September 23rd. Of course, we'd suggest you pocket that and just craft your own wildly colored (and slightly gourd-shaped) Wiimote covers, but we understand not everyone was blessed with those DIY genes. Sega Adds Electronic Hamster to Dream Pets Collection

Sega Toys has been up to all sorts of shenanigans lately, what with its rolling speaker robots, kissing bots, and workout headsets. Now the Japanese toy maker has drummed up a new addition to its Dream Pets collection. The Dream Hamster, a tiny furry thing that moves when you hold it, will be available in Japan on August 8th for around $11, and Sega fully expects to win the hearts of lonely women everywhere with these balls of puffy love. We mean, c'mon: it's a furry cute thing that wiggles. What's not to like? [Warning: read link is a PDF]

Video: Meet Hasbro's Ampbot, the Mother of All Rollys

Cross a Segway with a Rolly and Miuro and out pops this A.M.P. soaked in a grey-goo afterbirth of Robotic procreation. The two-wheeled, dancing A.M.P. (Automated Music Personality or Ampbot) from Sega-Hasbro stands 2.4-feet tall and features a MP3 or iPod cradle on its back, stereo speakers, and the ability to follow and interact with its owner. There's a 5-inch mid-range speaker in the chest and a pair of smaller tweeters in the shoulders for a total output of 12 watts.

Osamu Takeuchi of Sega Toys says, "The owner can also enjoy being chased around the house by the robot." Uh, yippee? The Ampbot and controller require 6x D and 3x AAA batteries for about 10-hours of continuous music. The stalking begins November for $745 $500 in the US and Japan.

Update: Embedded video courtesy of Impress now available after the break. Be warned: the price tag is starting to look modest even at the cost of our own destruction.

Sega's E.M.A. Robot Walks Like a Lady, Offers Up Smooches

There's something that makes us a bit uncomfortable about a robot that sports a "glamorous body," walks like a lady, and offers up some serious snogging. Today, Sega announced the E.M.A. (Eternal, Maiden, Actualization) robot that sings, dances, and -- yes -- kisses. If you get close enough to E.M.A., she drops into love mode and, well, the rest is up to you, big guy. Interestingly, it looks an awful lot like Wowwee's Fembot, which was announced back at CES in January.

Set up with infrared sensors to avoid obstacles (and, seemingly, sense your desire for some love nubbins) and movable elbows, shoulders, waist, and knees, E.M.A. will run around $175 and hit store shelves on September 26. [Via CrunchGear]

Sonic the Hedgehog Coming to the iPod

Sonic the Hedgehog Coming to an iPod Near You
The iPod has hardly taken off as a gaming platform. Sure, there have been some ports of classic puzzle games, and a 'Guitar Hero' rip off, but nothing truly exhilarating. But there is proof now that Apple takes the iPod seriously as a gaming platform.

Sega has ported over arguably its most classic game and character, Sonic the Hedgehog, to the iPod. Sure the idea of controlling this little blue speed demon with a scroll wheel sounds daunting, but we have faith that Sega wouldn't have released it if it wasn't playable.

Sonic is available now for $4.99 from the iTunes store.
