Retro Screensaver Plays Classic Nintendo Games

No one really uses screensavers these days. But if you grow bored with staring at a blank screen all day, there are actually some pretty cool ways to liven up your monitor. Screensavers aren't just meant for your viewing pleasure, either. The Nintendo Screensaver not only displays up to 60 classic Nintendo games on your screen, but according to OhGizmo!, with a simple keystroke you can jump into and begin playing any of the titles, too. You can blast away baddies at 'Contra' or help Mario rescue Princess Peach without your boss ever knowing the difference.

However, it might not be the best idea to run this emulator while at work. To play the games, the ROMs (digital copies of the original games) must be on your system, which would be frowned upon by management. It might be safer just to let pre-captured movies from your favorite NES games play on your monitor. After all, it's still much better than watching those flying toasters. Best of all, you won't end up getting the boot for improperly using your company's network connection. [From: Oh Gizmo!]

Best Free Screensavers for Your Computer

We know we told you to ditch them just a few short days ago, but we miss screensavers already.

The days of flying toasters and text crawls (with the name of your crush scrolling across the screen) are behind us. Instead of watching an armada of winged cooking appliances zoom across the screen of our idle computers, most of us stick with the power saving blank screen these days.

But you can add a little spice to your computer's down time by downloading any of the free screensavers still floating around the Web. URLesque collected 15 of the best, and we strongly suggest you follow the read link and check out the list. Just in case, we hand-selected our five favorites and put them in the gallery below. Enjoy! Get Into the Halloween Spirit with a Jack-O-Lantern Screen Saver

Get Into the Halloween Spirit with a Jack-O-Lantern Screen Saver
It's that time of year again, and we're not talking about the silly-season of politics. No, it's almost time for Halloween, and that means it's time for ghosts, goblins, and Jack-O-Lanterns.

The problem? Jack-O-Lanterns are messy, and easy to screw up. Carving a pumpkin requires patience and a steady hand, and scooping out that gunk inside is unpleasant, to say the least. Killer Robots, a developer of Mac software, created a Jack-O-Lantern screen saver to get you in the All Hallows Eve mood.

The Jack-O-Lantern screen saver features a realistic 3D pumpkin rotating on a black background. There are a collection of pre-made cut outs such as a wolf and an Apple logo, but it also comes with a 'Photoshop' template for creating your own virtual carvings.

On the downside, a virtual Jack-O-Lantern can't provide you with delicious freshly roasted pumpkin seeds. [From: TUAW]
