3G iPhone Touchscreen Leaks Out?

We're just one day away from WWDC, so the rumor mill is churning at a fever pitch -- and the latest context-less bits of info to emerge from the churn are these purported photos of the 3G iPhone's touchscreens over at iLounge.

Yeah, that's touchscreens, plural -- if these are to believed, Apple's got two sizes of iPhone in store for us on Monday: a 3.2-inch model, and a smaller 2.8-inch model. Note that both of those sizes are smaller than the current iPhone's 3.5-inch screen, which seems slightly implausible -- but kinda-sorta matches up with other rumors we've heard, including those persistent "iPhone nano" whispers from last year.

We still really doubt that Apple will shrink the iPhone's screen size, however, and there are literally hundreds of touchscreen iPhone KIRFs these panels could have come from, so we'd say there's a better chance this is just more hype -- but we know y'all have your own ideas. Rumor Mill: What Apple Might Announce on Monday
On Monday Apple will host its World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, where rumors are circulating that Apple will announce anything from the new 3G iPhone to a Steve-Jobs-manned mission to Mars. But what can you actually expect to come out of those few days in San Francisco? Here are the four announcements we think Mr. Jobs is most likely to make during his keynote Monday morning.

3G iPhone
This one is sort of a no-brainer. We know the release of this faster, upgraded iPhone is right around the corner -- the only question left is how soon can we get our grubby mitts on it. Rumors have circulated that it will be available worldwide on day one, but we wouldn't count on that. The FCC and other regulatory bodies have yet to see the new phone (if they had, we would know about it), so we figure you probably won't be able to purchase one for about a month, but we do think they're coming sooner rather than later.

iTunes App Store
When Apple announced the iPhone SDK, it also announced it would provide a central market place for the purchase of applications for your iPhone (games, instant-messaging software, etc). The App Store icon is in place, developers have started creating products -- all that is missing is the actual store itself. Don't be surprised when it goes live Monday afternoon.

OS X 10.5.4
Didn't Apple just release an update to its OS X operating system? Sure, but the secretive company wouldn't want to let any potential details about its new 3G iPhone slip with something as innocuous as small operating system update. So expect yet another round of bug fixes and drivers for those shiny new iPhones.

.Mac relaunch
This one is a bit more of a long shot. The .Mac service has been floudering for years. Apple has added new funtionality and kept it useful, but for the features the price is simply too high, and the inteface a bit dated. The rumor mill is suggesting that the .Mac will get rebranded and relaunched with the help of the other tech company du jour - Google.

iPhone 2.0 Launches World-Wide June 9th?
Well it's been just over a week since we last got to rumor mongering about the impending launch of the iPhone 2.0, so of course that means it's time to fire up the mills once again and get to speculating.

The latest bit of dirt out of Cupertino is that the new 3G capable iPhone will be making its debut at the June 9th Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. It's all but been confirmed that Mr. Jobs himself will be giving the keynote at the conference, and stocks of the iPhone have been suspiciously low. Add to that the recent batch of international carriers announcing deals with Apple, and the rumor of a world wide launch early next month doesn't seem to absurd.

Then again, the iPhone 2.0 has yet to make an appearance at the FCC with only two weeks to go before its supposed launch. [Source: TUAW, Via: Wired]

More iTunes Fitness Apps and Gadgets Due From Apple

Apple seems to think you're all a bunch of fat asses who need to get more exercise. Frankly, we're inclined to agree, you have been looking a little soft around the middle lately.

Apple has already teamed with Nike on iPod and running shoe packages, and unveiled a plan to put iPod docks in treadmills for saving workout data, now a new patent reveals the boys in Cupertino may be working on a full fledged fitness program and accompanying hardware.

Sensors will record heart rate and other physiological information to be loaded into an accompanying iTunes like fitness software platform. You'll be able to set goals, track achievements, even create custom work out routines based on your goals and interests.

The software will "interview" users to gather information such whether you want to lose weight, or just tone up, if you wish to be very active, or only moderately active, and what activities you'll enjoy (such as martial arts, yoga, or marathon running). The app will work with your iPod Touch or iPhone to give you work out plans and collect data while your at the gym.

Apple Finally Shuts down 'Think Secret' Rumor Site

Think SecretYou might remember back in 2005 when Apple sued the Apple rumor site Think Secret. The suit had one specific goal in mind: to find out the sources leaking information from Apple after Think Secret had managed to score the lowdown on a little piece of hardware called the Mac Mini.

Apple and Think Secret have settled, out of court, and as part of that agreement Nick Ciarelli, publisher of Think Secret, has shut down his site. According to a statement posted at Think Secret, the two parties reached "an agreement that results in a positive solution for both sides. As part of the confidential settlement, no sources were revealed and Think Secret will no longer be published." Nick is then quoted later on, "I'm pleased to have reached this amicable settlement."

We hope he's telling the truth and wish him luck.

iPhone and AppleTV to Unite in January in New Apple Product?

Poor Apple TV, so simply styled and sophisticated, yet already being called a failure by many. The thing just hasn't sold, and with its limited support for HDTV, it isn't likely to get any better. But in a recent interview with USA Today, Apple head honcho Steve Jobs indicates that he still wants Apple TV to succeed, and he has plenty to say about just how the company can make that happen. One suggestion seems quite fascinating to us: Turn the iPhone and iPod Touch into fancy remote controls.

No, this isn't an announcement of intent from Apple, but think about it: Logitech's programmable Harmony remotes make wading through the settings of your home entertainment center easy. One button to turn everything on to watch a movie, another one to turn on the Xbox 360 and play a game, etc. etc. No more fumbling with 15 remote controls. However, Harmony remotes are expensive one-trick ponies and somewhat painful to configure. If Apple could bring its patented user experience to the universal remote game, it could certainly have a winner on their hands.

However, there's one big catch: Neither the iPhone nor the iPod Touch have infrared emitters, so on their own they can't control much of anything. But connect the devices to an Apple TV via Wi-Fi, give the Apple TV 2.0 a built-in IR emitter, and you could stream content directly to your iPhone or iPod Touch and turn them into colorful, multi-touch universal remotes.

Maybe we're dreaming here, but we'd be interested.

AIBO Robo-Dog Coming Back in 2008! Maybe.

From the ashes of the fallen AIBO comes...another AIBO?

The print edition of Stuff magazine is reporting a rumor item that a resuscitated version of Sony's robotic dog companion, to go by the name of Sony AIBO PS, will be released by Sony's PlayStation division in an attempt to "bolster the PS3's arsenal." The next incarnation of Sony's robotic pet will be compatible with the PlayStation 3 and the PSP -- you'll have full control over the dog with your PSP, via Wi-Fi. The dog's head is supposedly equipped with a camera, with which to send a real-time video feed to the PSP's screen.

AIBO PS will allow for either voice control or remote control, and will be able to e-mail you at work when there's something fishy going on. He'll even appear with its own avatar within PlayStation Home, and react in the real world as he does in the PS3's upcoming service.

Still a rumor, but a good one, right?

New Ultra Portable MacBook Out in January?

While we hate to be the purveyors of rumors, particularly those of the Steve Jobsian variety, here's another one to sink your teeth into: AppleInsider is reporting that the long-promised ultra-portable Apple laptop will be making its debut at January's MacWorld Expo.

The system is supposedly a 13-inch jammer, and will come sans internal optical disc drive -- making it about 50 percent lighter than Apple's current 15-inch MacBook Pro.

The use of NAND flash memory, along with an LED-backlit display, will also supposedly help with battery life. Which it had better, because if we get another Mac laptop with a battery that dies in less than two-and-a-half hours, we'll refuse to buy another one (until the next one comes out).

Anyway, take this all wit a grain of salt. But we're excited, if (and that's a big if, which we even considered capitalizing) this is all not just a rumor. Which it might be.

Just saying is all.

iMac Touch-Screen on the Way?

Some of us have been hoping for or expecting it since the announcement of the iPhone, while some of the rest of you, like Farhad Manjoo of Machinist, are just realizing the possibilities. A touch-screen Mac, or the more traditional rumor route, a Mac Tablet.

It's not as crazy as it seems, the iPhone is built on OS X, it shares the same core operating system with your desktop and notebook Macs. So why not port over the awe inspiring multi-touch interface to the iMac? According to a recent article in the New York Times, Steve Jobs certainly thinks his new touchscreen is impressive. When interviewer John Markoff suggests that "there have been no obvious radical innovations to jump-start growth," Job's counters that the iPhone's multi-touch interface is exactly that sort of innovation. "People don't understand that we've invented a new class of interface," the Apple demigod is quoted as saying in the Times.

Imagine using multi-touch technology to manipulate an image in Photoshop, or twiddle with virtual knobs and faders in music creation programs such as ProTools or Apple's own Logic (the more likely initial candidate). So Mr. Jobs, we know it's technically feasible, and you seem to think it's revolutionary, so get moving and bring the world's best touch-screen technology to your desktop computer line... please?

Is Europe Getting a Better iPhone Next Week?

Time for the Apple Rumor Mill to Get Started Again
Get the rumor mills rollin'! Apple has sent out an invite to a September 18th press conference at the Regent street Apple store in London. There is no indication as to what the event could be about on the invitation itself -- only a cryptic headline, "Mum is no longer the word," graces the top. We'll take it upon ourselves to start the wild speculation.

Rumor number one, Beatles on iTunes.
Jobs keeps toying with us. We've been waiting oh, so patiently (and some of us not so patiently). London seems as good a place as any to announce this long-speculated news, but we feel like Apple would probably choose a bigger venue for this announcement.

Time for the Apple Rumor Mill to Get Started AgainRumor number two, movie rentals on iTunes.
There seems to have been a bit of a slip up and Apple accidentally uncorked its movie rental plans last week. No confirmation yet, but not much point in denying their desire to launch such a service.

Rumor number three, TV show price drop.
If, and this is a big if, Apple can get the studios on board for this price drop, then we may be getting our TV fixes on iTunes for a lot less by this time next week.

Rumor number four (and our favorite), iPhone goes 3G.
Our friends at Engadget think Apple will not only announce the iPhone for Europe, but it will run on Europe's high-speed 3G network, which is quite a bit faster than the Edge network that the iPhone runs on stateside. Will Americans revolt? Will they insist they, too, get high-speed iPhone data transmissions?

What Will Apple Announce Tomorrow?

In less than 24 hours -- tomorrow, September 5, to be exact -- Apple will be holding an event and making what will hopefully be some exciting announcements regarding new iPods and perhaps some new iTunes features. Apple is notoriously tight lipped about everything, so all we have to go on until tomorrow is hearsay and conjecture, which we thrive on.

Engadget has done a quick round up of all the information making its way through the rumor mill ahead of tomorrow's event. Wide, touchscreen Wi-Fi enabled iPods? Check. Newer, bigger, more-music-holding Nano "Phatty?" Why not. Beatles on iTunes? Sure!

Our money, like that of most Apple-watchers, is on the wide, touchscreen-enabled iPods and bigger-memory Nanos. After all, it's been almost two years since the last major iPod update, so it's just got to happen this time. We know it'll be music-related, since the artwork used on the invite (above) is an image of Apple's Cover Flow feature on iTunes and the iPhone.

Some other intriguing rumors, about a downloadable ringtones store for the iPhone, would be welcome, since the iPhone currently has about the worst selection of ringtones on earth (a measly couple dozen or so).

Even with less than a day to go, new stories are still popping up. Shiny Shiny is reporting a possibility that the iPods may incorporate an FM tuner, finally, with a click-to-buy feature that will allow you to wirelessly download a song you're listening to on the radio via iTunes.
