Apple No Longer No. 1 in Computer Reliability, Report Says

2009 has not been kind to Apple.

According to a new report, Mac sales have taken a hit in the early months of 2009, and now Apple has slipped to number two in terms of computer reliability. RescueCom, a computer support hotline, factors both the number of service calls made to its hotline and a company's market share before delivering its quarterly computer reliability report. This quarter saw Asus and Lenovo tied for first place with Apple in second.

We will see if Apple can reclaim the reliability throne by the end of the year, when RescueCom's yearly report comes out. [From: Wired]

Samsung No. 1 in US Cell Phone Market, Dethrones Motorola

No matter how dire Motorola's situation may be, it's still been able to cling to one last title keeping it firmly entrenched in the ranks of the world's mobile manufacturing elite: US phone sales. For years, Motorola has ridden the RAZR gravy train to success on its home turf more than any other, keeping more globally relevant rivals like Nokia and LG at bay.

No longer, though -- Samsung has finally dethroned Moto, upping its share of the US market to 22.4 percent from 16.2 percent a year ago. That leaves Motorola in number two with 21.1 percent, a shocking fall from 32.7 percent in 2007. LG's knocking on the door at 20.5 percent, so unless the boys and girls in Chicago can get their Android-supportin' butts in gear on the double, we could see a drop to number three within a quarter or two.

Alaska Has Slowest Downloads in the Country, Survey Reveals

The Communications Workers of America recently released a survey of national broadband speeds and penetration and, perhaps not surprisingly, Alaska was ranked dead last in Internet speed. The average download speed across the state was a miserly 0.8 megabits per second (mbps), barely fast enough to stream a YouTube video without hiccups. By comparison, the fastest average speeds in the rest of the United States were found in Rhode Island, where a speedy 6.8 mbps is the norm, which lets you download a song in less than 10 seconds

Of course, these speeds pale in comparison with other nations. Japanese surfers get average download speeds of 63 mbps, and even the French get 17 mbps. However, American averages are pulled down due to the 15 percent of the population still connecting via ancient dial-up networks. [Source: Communications Workers of America, via Great Falls Tribune]

Nintendo Ranked Least 'Green' Tech Company

Proving once again that it's always the smiley-faced, rosey-cheeked cherub that has the human skeletons in its closet, sunshine-and-rainbow-drenched video game purveyor Nintendo has come in dead last in a ranking of the world's most eco-friendly electronics companies.

The quarterly "Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics" ranks 18 electronics firms by how green their production processes and products are ... and the big N pulled up the rear at number 18.

Of course, Nintendo had its own response, claiming that it scored low because it had not provided data for the survey. "Greenpeace chose to conduct a survey and produce a report, which graded companies upon the voluntary submission of information," the firm said in a statement. "Nintendo decided not to take part in the survey and were therefore 'ungraded' in the resulting report." Which of course begs the question: Why didn't the company take part?

Oh, and pipe down over there in the corner, Xbox fanboys -- Microsoft came in at 17, a position that reflected its "low score on climate criteria". [Source: BBC]

Massachusetts Deemed Most Tech-Savvy State, Beating California

Massholes. They think they're the best at everything. And oh, wait -- they are! The Smartest State has lots of "best" titles, between the Red Sox, Harvard, and now (again), technology.

Since 2002, the Santa-Monica-based Milken institute has been releasing reports on the technological state of affairs. That is, the institute ranks states based on criteria like tech-savviness of workers, commitment to tech growth, and economic gain from technology and science.

And Ol' Ivy, Massachusetts, always wins! Usually California, home to Silicon Valley and silicone boobs, comes in second, but not this year! The state slipped to an embarassing fourth place in the rankings, ceding its spot to Maryland and Colorado (ouch!). Mississippi came in last, predictably, but still wins for obesity.

We still love you, California. Don't blame yourself --this is probably Spielberg's fault. [Source: USA Today]

Facebook Surpasses MySpace as World's Most Popular Social Network

Facebook Surpasses MySpace as World's Most Popular Social NetworkWhen it comes to online social networks, MySpace has long been the proverbial 800-pound gorilla. Lately that's been changing, with Facebook quickly bulking up and catching its rival, signing up far more people each month than MySpace. As of two months ago, the 'Book (founded by Marc Zuckerberg, pictured) finally surpassed its rival, becoming the most visited social network in the world.

MySpace still dominates in the U.S., where it attracts about 65-million visitors each month -- Facebook pulls in a relatively paltry 25-mil. However, both are attracting over 115-million worldwide, with Facebook now taking a slight lead. That trend is expected to continue, largely thanks to the site's integration with other online destinations via hundreds of applications. This is an area were MySpace is fighting back via its new data availability initiative, letting you access your MySpace info from other sites like Flickr.

However, since a security flaw in that same initiative helped to expose the private profiles of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, we're putting our money on Facebook in the long run. [Source: TechCrunch]

Users Spend More Time on MySpace Despite Slipping Traffic

Social networking is one of the biggest Internet phenomenons of the last few years, and it's still MySpace that dominates the online social networking landscape, according to Web measurement firm Hitwise.

As reported in ReadWriteWeb, MySpace takes the top traffic prize with 73.82 percent of all social networking traffic. Facebook only garners 14.8 percent of social networking traffic. Other sites take no more than two percent share, so this is really a tale of two brands.

The real story here, however, isn't who is on top traffic-wise but how long that traffic stays on a site. So, while traffic has slipped for MySpace by five percent during the last year, the average amount of time active MySpace members spend on the site has increased by a whopping 73 percent. So that means the members who do stick around really, really do stick around. [Source: ReadWriteWeb]
