We Are Hunted Knows What Music Is Hot on Twitter

Like a Top of the Pops for the digital age, the Web site We Are Hunted has turned to Twitter to see which musicians and bands are getting the most play. With a new rubric for musical popularity - involving downloads, tweets, status updates and blog posts instead of airplay - We Are Hunted not only scans sites, but has also started using Twitter to determine what folks are tweeting about and what's been setting their ears afire.

The site has two charts: one for general popularity, blog mentions and Internet buzz, and another, newly launched one addressing Twitter exclusively. The way We Are Hunted keeps tabs on Twitter is by sampling it throughout the day and tuning into the Twitter feeds of music networks like Last.fm or Blip.fm. Interestingly, the two charts are fairly dissimilar.

The main chart prominently features remixes, brand new or premiering tracks, and indie artists and labels. The Twitter chart has a vintage slant, with artists like Pink Floyd, Metallica, and Bob Dylan being listed alongside Top 40 artists like Lady Gaga or the Jonas Brothers. The divergence, we believe, is probably due to the Twitter chart being what people actually listen to, not just what they talk about. [From: ReadWriteWeb.com]
