Fresh Papa John's Pizza Now Available via Your PlayStation 3

We're not sure what it is about pizza chains that have put them at the forefront of food ordering technology, but Domino's, The Hut, and Papa John's are in a constant arms race for electronic pizza ordering superiority. Domino's has its online Pizza Tracker, and a partnership with TiVo, while the newly christened The Hut lets you place orders via text message, Facebook, and an iPhone App.

Papa John's, on the other hand, has fallen behind. After launching online orders and leading the charge to the Web in 2001, the company has expanded to offer text message ordering and some "widgets," but failed to stay at the forefront of the e-pizza ordering revolution. The company decided it needed a partner to put it in the face of more people, like Domino's with its TiVo widget. Papa John's picked Sony and the PlayStation 3 as its way into the heart of gamers (who we know love both pizza and convenience), and thus the American public.

Just Announced: Sony's $300 'Skinny' PlayStation 3

The rumor that we wrote about this morning has proven to be true; Sony's PlayStation 3 Slim is hitting stores in September with its thinner, sleeker design. As far as features go, Engadget reports that the console is the same, but takes up 32-percent less space. It's more eco-friendly, too, consuming 34-percent less power. More importantly, it's a lot sexier, with laptop-like curves and arched casing.

The PS3 Slim has a 120-gigabyte capacity, and that leads to Sony's second announcement: existing PS3 systems are confirmed to drop by $100. That price drop will put the 80-gigabyte model at $299 and the 160-gigabyte at $399. Though, with the Slim just around the corner, these price cuts don't come as much of a surprise. But we have to ask: if you could get a newfangled, 120-gigabyte PS3 for $300, why would you buy the old-fashioned, 80-gigabyte system for $300? Somebody in corporate has some explaining to do. [From: Engadget, Engadget and PlayStation.com Forums]

Update: For more details and specs and to see how the Slim sizes up against other PS3s, head over to Engadget.

MAG's 256-Person Capacity Makes It the Biggest PS3 Shooter Yet

In gaming, there are online games and off, with the latter group of logged-off games largely becoming a relic of earlier, simpler times. Then, in the online realm, there are massively complex multiplayer games and games which are, well, somewhat less massive. First-person shooters, like Quake, tend to be smaller online affairs, rarely playable with more than 32 gamers. That may all change with MAG, an online shooter that supports a massive 256 simultaneous players in a single map.

A tactical first-person shooter, MAG is in a similar vein to another hugely popular online game for Sony: SOCOM. The series, and its multiple iterations on PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable consoles, is still going strong, but MAG takes things in a different direction. Ditching any true storyline, the focus rests entirely on online combat, though the player teams up with one of three factions fighting for global supremacy. You sign in, choose sides, then lock and load to start capturing territory.

UK Prisoners Allegedly Running Crime Syndicates with PlayStations

Sure, you can use the PlayStation 3 to play games and watch Blu-ray movies -- heck, you can even use it to study gravity. But the latest interesting and unique usage of the console comes from Britain, where the country's Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) is alleging the gaming machine is being used to run massive crime syndicates.

According to a recently-released report by SOCA, prisoners are using chat rooms in online games and coded language to get information and orders to criminal co-conspirators on the outside. The Prison Service (PS), the organization that handles prison security, reacted harshly to the charges, however, since it was not warned that the allegations would be included in the annual report.

PlayStation: The Console That Almost Wasn't

PlayStation:The Console That Almost Wasn't
Maybe it just shows what big dorks we are, but we were fascinated the whole way through Edge-Online's 'The Making Of: PlayStation' article. Some of you may be more than happy to accept that PlayStation exists and never give it any more thought. Others, however, might be interested to know some of the quirks and trivia surrounding the creation and launch of what would become one of the most successful consoles in gaming history.

For example, did you know that the PlayStation started its life as a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo? That was before the purveyors of all things Mario broke the deal and partnered with Philips on a deal that also ultimately fell apart (but not before it resulted in a handful of games featuring Nintendo characters on the ill-fated CD-i). Also, in what could have wound up being a terrible business decision, Sony almost abandoned the video game market after the Nintendo deal collapsed. Sony only begrudgingly pursued the development of the PlayStation, and tried to limit its marketing and availability on launch.

Check out the article at the read link below for the complete story behind the greatest console that almost wasn't. [From: Edge-Online]

Netflix Expanding Out to Other Gaming Platforms?

We've heard whispers of Netflix heading to other, non-Xbox 360 game consoles before, and now adding to the susurrous is a job listing from the company for Engineering Lead - Gaming Platforms. The description calls for someone familiar with the technical hurdles of current-gen consoles for building a small team to "rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms." Whether or not this means we'll be seeing PlayStation 3 or Wii services in the near (or even distant) future is anyone's guess, but with Microsoft's version so far a streaming success, we wouldn't be surprised if the company took a few steps to increase the probability that 3 billionth delivered flick is digital.

Man Murders Son's Mother Over Gaming Addiction

Man Murders Wife Over Gaming AddictionIf domestic bliss is your goal, here is a bit of advice; do not put your big plasma TV and your PlayStation 3 in the bedroom. Oh, and certainly don't make your partner sleep on the couch so you can stay up all night playing 'Grand Theft Auto.'

Carol Cannom, 46, of Lincolnshire, England, purchased 'GTA' for her 10-year-old son (we're questioning the intelligence of that decision, too), but soon became addicted to the game, herself. She would often play until five or six in the morning while she forced her partner and the father of her child, 62-year-old Malcolm Palmer, to sleep on their couch.

Palmer eventually became convinced that Cannom was having an affair and went into a "violent rage." Palmer stabbed Cannom with a pair of kitchen knives, leaving 20 puncture wounds in her chest and ultimately killing her.

Palmer's son called the police during the melee, after which Palmer reportedly took the phone and said into the receiver: "I'm sorry. I think I've killed her."

Let this be a lesson to those who think that their video game addictions aren't dangerous. [From: DailyTech]

Librarians Busted for Playing 'Rock Band' on the Job

In an attempt to attract youngsters, employees of one Nebraska public library recently instituted a gaming workshop, until, that is, constroversy paralyzed the effort.

One local taxpayer caught wind of the Omaha librarians' unorthodox event via the above video, which shows the librarians playing the game 'Rock Band' in what appears to be the library's study room. The librarians had posted the video in hopes of promoting the workshops. Apparently outraged, the whistleblower put a call in to Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley's office. In no time, Foley had launched an investigation.

"It was state employees, on state time, during work hours, playing with and setting up a PlayStation video game system," Foley told Omaha's Action 3 News. We wouldn't imagine he thinks that's a good thing.

PlayStation "Shooters" Surrounded by SWAT Team

Saturday night, in Valby, Denmark, two friends were playing a rousing shoot-'em-up game on PlayStation when neighbors, mistaking the sound for real violence, called the police, according to the Register.

Soon thereafter, a SWAT team surrounded the men's apartment, carrying heavy firearms and barking through megaphones.

When the men 'surrendered,' the cops became immediately aware of the misunderstanding.

Copenhagen's chief of police, John Hansen, explained that no report of gunfire goes unanswered, which understandably results in a lot of false alarms. [From: The Register]

Confirmed: PlayStation Home Launch Coming This Month in US

We know you aren't going to believe it 'til you see it, but SCEA has confirmed to our brethren at Joystiq that PlayStation Home will hit the US market before 2009 dawns. In the words of PS Home director Jack Buser: "We've been saying it will launch by the end of calendar year 2008, and that's getting very, very close." He continued by affirming that "launch is imminent," but stopped short of giving us a date to mark down in our calendars. Tick, tock.

Gamer Overcomes Disability with Custom PlayStation 3 Controller

Yeah, we may be hardened cynics -- our cold, black hearts have closed off to all but the most extraordinary tech-related stories, and we don't talk about the triumph of the human spirit a lot, but PlayStation 3 forum user KitsuneYume has us stepping outside our usual box today. With the help of an engineer, he made an "adaptive controller" that allows him to game with the pros despite serious disabilities. 20 out of 25 functions are accounted for by the system, and he uses his fingers, toes, and even his tongue to play -- your regular, everyday controller mod it ain't.

The creator said he uploaded the pictures to make sure folks who might need it are aware the technology exists, as he contacted Sony a while back and they weren't able to tell him where to look. We hope this helps gets the word out, because we think everyone should have and chance to lie, cheat, and steal their way through 'Fallout 3.'

[Thanks, Jason]

Truck of PlayStation 3 Games Stolen, Recovered, Stolen Again

Truck of PS3 Games Stolen, Recovered, Stolen AgainIf you think that headline sounds as though it should have come out of a 'Police Academy' movie, then check this out: According to Britain's Daily Telegraph, thousands of Playstation 3 games -- cumulatively worth over a million dollars -- were stolen over the weekend from the back of a truck in Northhampton, England. The truck and its contents were recovered, but amazingly the games were stolen again, right out of a police impound area before anyone had managed to dust it for fingerprints.

The truck contained 17,000 copies of 'Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway' and an undisclosed number of copies of the game everyone loves to hate, 'Grand Theft Auto.' Details of exactly how the crooks managed to get away with it all a second time weren't disclosed, but the truck at least was found -- minus the valuable contents, naturally. Police are now on the lookout for a conspicuous number of the games showing up on eBay and other online auction sites, but after this bungle, we aren't expecting much. [From: The Telegraph]

Sony Shows Off PlayStation Updates at German Gaming Convention

The Leipzig Games Convention (a.k.a. the GC) is going fast and furious through the end of the week in Germany, and Sony has started things off with a slew of updates and revelations about their PlayStation line of gaming devices. First, the company finally made the PSP-3000 official, another tweak to their aged but ultimately respectable PSP. It'll be more or less the same as the PSP-2000 (last year's slimmer model), but will feature an included microphone for Skype calling and a screen that is said to be better for outdoor gaming.

The rest of the news surrounds the PlayStation 3, which is getting a clip-on keypad for its controllers, very similar to the Xbox 360 keypad Microsoft released last year. No word on pricing or availability yet, but we have both of those stats for yet another PS3 bundle. This one features a console with a 160-gigabyte hard drive, a copy of 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune,' and a slew of downloads from Sony's PSN store. That'll be $499 this November, but if you can't wait that long or don't need the extra disk space, the new $399 80-gigabyte model system is now hitting stores near you right this very moment -- unless you live in Europe, in which case you'll have to wait until tomorrow.

While it's not expected that Nintendo will be dropping any bombshells at the show, everyone's sure that a price drop for the Xbox 360 is in the cards in the very near future. Will Microsoft take this opportunity to let loose with the news? We shall see.
