Neil Young Debuts Video Shot Entirely in His New Green Car

Throughout his career, musician Neil Young has earned a well deserved, blue-collar reputation as a voice for the common man and the oppressed, speaking out against governmental and corporate greed and corruption. With his new 'Johnny Magic' music video, filmed entirely inside the experimental 'LincVolt' automobile, Young seeks to honor "people and heroes and change" that represent "Life in America," according to his statement at The Huffington Post.

The rocker based 'Johnny Magic' on John Goodwin, who is identified in the song as the "motorhead messiah" of Wichita, Kansas. Goodwin, a mechanic, turned Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV convertible into a biodiesel-fueled, electrical hybrid, "heavy metal Continental" that gets 100 miles to the gallon, and, based on the lyrics, travels in a "blaze of silence."

With the project, Young aims to provide an affordable, environmentally friendly car that will
inspire the automotive giants of Detroit to adapt to global warming issues, as well as assuage financial worries during a period when, as he says during the song, "the whole world started running out of money." Well, we're hoping the magic men can do the same conversion for our classic '70 Gremlin, and on the cheap. But only because of unselfish ecological concerns. We promise. Besides, 'GremVolt' has a nice ring to it. [From: The Huffington Post Via: autobloggreen]

Neil Young Not Happy With YouTube

Yesterday, Neil Young fired a shot at YouTube, claiming that the Google-owned purveyor of online video has unfairly treated artists signed to the Warner Music Group.

According to Young's blog (cleverly titled 'NY Times'), YouTube has underpaid Warner artists, whose peers on other record labels have been getting larger licensing checks. Young points out that, because Warner Reprise was one of the first labels to cooperate with YouTube, its contract did not wind up being as attractive as those signed later on by more cautious labels.

Looking for something in the way of a solution, Young wrote, "If all artists were compensated equally, and the people decided who had the hits and misses by virtue of number of downloads and plays, there would be no grounds for disagreement that would cause the facilitator of the art to break the conduit between an artist and an audience."

Neil Young Argues for Electric Car Revolution in Detroit

The award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young is bound and determined to tear down and rebuild the motor in Motor City, according to Autoblog and a piece that the singer wrote for Huffington Post.

Sharing popular concerns about fuel prices and efficiency, Young has been hard at work in recent months, trying to develop practical electric car conversions. His masthead vehicle -- a revamped '59 Lincoln dubbed Linc Volt -- has gotten some media attention of late.

Riding that wave of publicity, Young has penned a piece for the Huffington Post, challenging Detroit auto manufacturers to "make a good deal for the future of America" and to "stop building autos that contribute to global warming now." Referencing his Linc Volt model and other competitors for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, Young vehemently argues that the requisite technology is realistic, if not already available.

Neil Young Starts Linc Volt Electric Car Conversion Company

Sure, you've got a couple Neil Young CDs and maybe a battered Farm-Aid T-shirt, but if you're really into ol' Shakey, you'll pick up one of his hotrod electric Lincoln conversions. Yep, Neil's started a company called Linc Volt to develop electric car technologies, and he's already converted his own personal '59 Lincoln in an attempt to win the Automotive X-Prize -- a process that's the subject of an upcoming documentary. Young says he's mostly focused on developing the tech -- Linc Volt will provide instructions as well as performing the actual converisons. Sure, we're into it -- just make sure it's got one of those rumbling speaker systems and we'll take two.

Neil Young's Entire Music Archive to be Released On Blu-ray

Sun Microsystems's pledge to aid the widespread development of interactive content on Blu-ray discs wasn't the only thing going down today at the JavaOne Conference in San Francisco. Rather surprisingly, famed musician Neil Young announced plans to "release his entire music archive on Blu-ray discs that can be updated over the internet."

Reportedly, the first installment of Young's archive will cover 1963 to 1972 and will be released as a ten-disc set this fall on Reprise / Warner Bros. Records, and subsequent archives will be released chronologically and "include some previously unreleased songs, videos, handwritten manuscripts and other memorabilia."

Stressing Blu-ray interactivity, it was also noted that fans could download more songs, photos and tour information via their internet-connected decks. Needless to say, we're pretty stoked about the whole ordeal, and can only hope that more artists follow suit in serving up their work via Blu-ray. [Source: AOL Money & Finance/AP]
