Nissan's Land Glider Concept Car Leans Like a Motorcycle

Are you a fan of the motorcycle's ability to lean into turns but just don't feel safe riding with your body exposed like that? Well, a new concept car from Nissan has you covered, literally. According to Engadget, the Nissan Land Glider features two-in-line seats and the ability to lean at a 17-degree angle around turns. At just 3.5-feet wide, the electric car can maneuver like a bike, but it's also a zero-emissions vehicle, unlike those other hogs on the highway.

Alright, so the Land Glider doesn't give you as much street cred as a Harley Davidson, or even this other electric motorcycle. But it's still amazing to see a car, albeit a small one, lean into those turns (see the video after the break). One can only imagine what it'd feel like sitting behind the wheel. Come to think of it, the Land Glider will debut in a few weeks at the Tokyo Motor Show. Maybe we could "borrow" the Glider while security is distracted. [From: Engadget]

Orange County Choppers Goes Green with Electric Motorcycle

While it won't make you look like the toughest guy on two wheels, a new custom motorcycle from the notoriously horsepower-heavy Orange County Choppers will be a little better for the environment.

According to Wired, the Smart Chopper is the world's first custom-built electric motorcycle. Commissioned by electronics giant Siemens as a way to flaunt their 'environmental awareness', the bike maintains the signature Orange County Choppers flavor, style, and, of course, power. The eco-chopper includes a 60-mile range, a single speed, clutch-less transmission, and a 27-horsepower engine -- altogether allowing the bike to top out at 100 mph. Just plug the bike into any 110-volt socket for five hours, and you're good to keep on cruising down the highway.

P120 Fighter Combat Bike Continues Futuristic Motorcycle Trend

Confederate Motor Company, an Alabama motorcycle manufacturer striving for "principled individuality," is set to release its new P120 Fighter Combat bike at the upcoming Quail Motorsports Gathering in California, according to The Cool Hunter. The bike, which maintains Confederate's "technical and primitive" form, incorporates a lightweight aluminum frame and a streamlined and awesome Terminator-esque, yet somewhat steampunk appearance. The company's other offerings, including the Wraith, also feature futuristic designs, invoking images from classic sci-fi movies.

Independent motor companies like Confederate have been placing pressure on major motorcycle corporations in recent years to significantly alter their design strategies. Manufacturers like Zero Motorcycles, which makes electric, dirt, and street bikes, are forcing the big guys to design greener, more high-tech vehicles.

Finally... Flying Motorcycles Make Dreams Real

The future, finally, is here, we've learned from Dvice. For those of us who marked 2015 as the date we would get flying hoverboards, there isn't much hope for our dreams being realized. Fortunately, Samson Motorworks feels our pain. While we don't have airborne skateboards, the company has recently designed a three-wheeled, flying motorbike (or is that motortrike?). Ditching the idea of four-wheeled vehicles for more aerodynamic three-wheelers, Samson has designed two prototypes using motorcycle engines (for less emission) and rear-weight placement (to avoid overturning on the ground).

However, the coolest part -- besides the flying motorcycle bit -- is that each vehicle has exceptional wing capacity. The Skybike uses special, scissor-like wings that can carry the vehicle aloft at 134 mph, and retract when not in use. Plus, of course, the Skybike has a cushy interior with air-conditioning and MP3 capacity. Though there is no price on these certainly expensive vehicles, Samson is slating them to hit dealers next year. Finally, a reason for all of our preemptive flying lessons. YouTube Motorcycle Stunt Man Jailed for 12 Weeks

If you've spent much time perusing YouTube, surely you've seen a video or two of someone on two wheels performing ill-advised stunts, often with painful ends. One of those stunters was British 28-year-old Sandor Ferenci, who posted a video of himself performing wheelies and going 130mph on public streets. The Oxford police received a complaint and then were tipped to the video by Ferenci himself. He was quickly arrested and charged with "lunatic and grossly irresponsible manoeuvres at considerable speed." He'll now be serving 12 weeks behind bars and, after that, will be unable to drive (or ride, we hope) for two years.

Good job, officers, now maybe you could go about finding this guy? [From: Reuters]

Wearable Airbags Keep the Elderly Safe From Falls

wearable airbags

Elderly? Enfeebled? Just plain clumsy? Tokyo-based Prop has your back. Its newly announced personal, wearable airbag looks like a cool fanny-pack and weighs a mere 1.1 kilograms (2.4 pounds) -- but springs forth in one-tenth of a second when sensors detect you're headed for the floor, protecting your head and ass with two inflated bags that contain 3.9 gallons of gas each. Similar to the various airbag-equipped suits already used by some motorcyclists, the Tokyo Prop's airbag is specifically designed to help the elderly, according to Prop president Mitsuya Uchida. The bag is yours for a cool ¥148,000 ($1,400). [From AFP and Daily Telegraph]

Motorcyclist Reclines to Text While Ridin' (Video)

If you thought texting while driving was bad, wait until you get a load of this video (the language is probably not work safe, so hit mute before pressing play). In it a motorcyclist cruising down the middle lane of a very busy highway takes a few minutes to kick back, pull out his phone, and send off a quick text (or three). Motorcycling alone is dangerous enough, so we wouldn't recommend you riders out there trying this out if you like such things as unbroken limbs -- or living. But, the dude does get a few points for wearing a helmet, which must count for something... right? [Source: Break.com]

Street-Legal DIY Electric Motorcycle Costs Under $2000

We've seen more silly homemade electric vehicles than we care to remember, but Ben Nelson's electric motorcycle manages to retain some of its original two-wheel charm while using only a penny of juice per mile -- roughly the equivalent of 300mpg.

Nelson bought the bike for $100 and swapped out the original engine for a Briggs and Stratton 8HP DC motor he picked up on eBay for $500, using four $160 Optima Yellowtop lead-acid batteries for power. Nelson says he can get the rig up to a top speed of 45MPH, and he's got a range of about 20 miles before he needs to plug in -- enough to run errands around town.

Best of all, the state of Wisconsin willingly registered his bike as a "hobbyist" vehicle, which means he's free to (silently) roam the streets at will. Ben first built the bike about a year ago, so he's accumulated a ton of useful info if you're interested in following in his tire tracks -- hit up the read link to learn more, and check the video after the break.

The Box-Shaped Motorcycle Concept

It looks like Dell's not the only one that thinks boxy is in, with the folks at the NonObject design firm now also taking a decidedly hard-edged approach with their new motorcycle concept. Dubbed the nUCLEUS, the vehicle is described as a "zero emission, zero impact speed machine," albeit one that would seem to have a bit of trouble making sharp turns. That possible shortcoming aside, the concept is certainly unique enough, with it boasting an "animal-like behavior system" that allows it to get up on its "hind legs" when its in action and rest down flat when its at rest, as well as some interchangeable (but equally boxy) side panels. Of course, there's not much in the way of technical details, but you can at least get a look at it from every angle by checking out the video after the break.
