Morning Xtra: Flickr Opens to Twitter, MacBooks for Maine Students

Maine Students Get MacBooks
CNet reports that the state of Maine is continuing its plan to provide laptops to kids by purchasing MacBooks for all public school students in the seventh through 12th grades. Talk about lucky; it's got to be easier learning to type on those sleek MacBooks than on the ancient IBMs we had. [CNet]

Flickr Opens to Twitter
Flickr, star of the early Web 2.0 days, has finally added Twitter functionality. Flickr users are now able to share their images on the popular microblogging site with an in-browser tool or with a mobile phone using a new, "2twitter" e-mail address. Full explanation, with pictures, at ReadWriteWeb. [From: ReadWriteWeb]

Morning Xtra: Old PCs Sing Queen, Brain Tweets, Comcast 'Flasher'

Old Computers Sing Queen
Old hardware never dies; it just finds new use with modders. For proof, check out this version of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" played by a junkpile of archaic computer hardware. YouTube user bd594 synced up the nostalgic bleats, whirrs, blips, and rings from a number of devices. Listen to an old HP ScanJet printer "singing" vocals to an Atari 800Xl pulling organ duty. [From: BoingBoing]

Court for Comcast 'Flasher'
A man who allegedly exposed his nether parts to a Comcast field technician is due in court on charges of indecent exposure. Like a scene out of a bad porn flick, the technician came to the man's house in order to fix his slow Internet service, but got a little more than he bargained for when the man, after he'd mentioned finding a sex tape in a gas station garbage can, whipped out his antenna. Understandably, the technician was uncomfortable and fled the scene, reporting it to his supervisor, who called the police. [From: Cnet]

Criminals Pay Big Bucks for Hackable Nokia Phone That Enables Exploitation of Online Bank Accounts
A top fraud investigator in the Netherlands told IT World that cybercriminals are paying top dollar for a discontinued $150 Nokia cell phone (more than $32,400 a phone, in fact). The phone features a software problem that is vulnerable to tampering and could be "exploited to hack into online bank accounts." You can read more about how the criminals might use the hacked phones here. [From: IT World}

Morning Xtra: Busted Netflix Blu-rays; Big-Time Buyouts

Busted Blu-ray From Netflix
Our buddies over at Engadget have heard reports of Blu-ray discs from Neflix arriving with small cracks around their edges, which makes them unplayable. No word as to what is causing the damage. Netflix is claiming that the problem is "infinitesimally small," but we'd like to see the company make the switch from its paper packaging to some sturdier, like the cardboard envelopes that GameFly uses. [From: Engadget]

Free LinkScanner From AVG
Malicious links are one of the most common vectors for viruses and other bad junk to get in and infect your computer. We advocate using an add-on scanner to keep your system safe while you surf. Security firm AVG is now offering its real-time scanning software LinkScanner free-of-charge in the company's new AVG Free Edition software suite. The program scans Web pages for bad links, tags search results with safety suggestions, and scans links in e-mails and instant messages before they are opened. [From: Cnet]

Ditch Your Ignition Key for Your iPhone
Chrysler's Peapod electric vehicle may not balance on two wheels like GM's PUMA concept, but this glorified golf cart makes up for it with the coolest ignition technology we've seen since the push-button starter -- iPhone/iPod touch ignition. Apparently, using your iPhone as an ignition key is as easy as downloading Chrysler's app, although you can still use a traditional key if you feel so inclined. [From: Engadget]

Morning Xtra: 'COLBERT' Flies on Space Station; 'Galaga' on iPhone

NASA Honors Comedian With Space Treadmill
NASA won't be naming a module of International Space Station after Stephen Colbert, even though the television comedian won the online naming contest with 230,000 votes after urging his viewers to put his name on the ballot. The space agency reserved the right to choose the final name, instead opting to call the module 'Tranquility.' As a consolation to the true contest winner, NASA announced the station's newest exercise machine, an elaborate treadmill, will be rechristened the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill, or COLBERT. Colbert stated on his show that he believes the treadmill is actually better than the new module, because the module is merely a box for the treadmill. Beautiful. [From: USA Today]

Finally, 'Galaga' for iPhone/Touch
It amazes us that it took so long, but the classic arcade game 'Galaga' is finally available for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Released by Namco/Bandai, 'Galaga Remix' ($6) offers a revamped version of the arcade favorite, as well as the untarnished original that we love so well. So put down that roll of quarters and head to the iPhone app store for space blasting, pixelated goodness. [From: USA Today]

Twitter May Be Hazardous to Your Morality
Caution: Twitter and other rapid-fire news sources could make you an immoral monster, incapable of compassion or human sympathy. This according to scientists at the University of Southern California, whose recent study supposedly found that people were quick to respond to signs of pain or anguish in others, but much slower in showing compassion or admiration. Researchers fear that sites like Twitter, which constantly bombards users with new information, may trigger indifference to human suffering and could harm a viewer's moral compass. We could not disagree more -- in our opinion, all forms of media tend to abstract suffering. It's no different than finding it hard to feel sad about events around the globe that you read about in the newspaper. Twitter has nothing to do with it. [From: CNN]

Morning Xtra: Goldman Sachs, Korea Try to Shut Bloggers Up

Famous Korean Blogger Faces Prison Time
Democracy takes a low blow as South Korean financial blogger Park Dae-sung (known online as "Minerva") faces 18 months in prison after being falsely critical about the Korean government. Famous for predicting the fall of Lehman Brothers and the resulting global economic crisis, the blogger was arrested after publishing an incorrect story that prosecutors claim undermined the credibility of the government, according to the AP. [From: Wired]

Want an Unlocked iPhone? Bring Your Wallet
Online outlet Buy.com announced it has begun selling unlocked iPhones. If you're a heavy traveler and like to swap SIM cards, or if you just can't stand AT&T (the unlocked phone will work on T-Mobile, although data speeds will be slower on the EDGE network), then bust out the wallet; an unlocked device will set you back a whopping $800. With that dough, you could buy an Asus Eee PC 901 netbook and an iPod Touch and still have $300 left over. [From: Business Insider]

Goldman Sachs to Blogger: Shut Up
Financial giant Goldman Sachs has too much on its hands right now to be dealing with pesky bloggers, or so it would seem to us, anyway. The company recently sent a cease-and-desist letter to Florida blogger Mike Morgan, whose critical blog GoldmanSachs666.com apparently infringes on Goldman Sachs' trademark and "creates confusion in the marketplace," at least according to the company's letter. Yeah, right. Nice try, Goldman, but bloggers have rights too. Thank you, First Amendment. [From: Fox News]

Morning Xtra: Amazon Blames Gay Book De-Ranking on Glitch, Bay Tweets

Amazon Blames Removes Gay and Lesbian Titles from Rankings, Blames 'Glitch'

Thousands of gay-and-lesbian-themed titles were removed from the online bookseller's influential sales rankings over the past few days. Amazon blamed the accidental classification of these books (everything from classic mainstream novels to self-help books) as 'adult' on a glitch. Regardless, thousands of online activists flooded Amazon's e-mail inboxes over the weekend, and the controversy doesn't look like it's slowing down, according to paid content.org. Fans of the action-movie director's movies will rejoice in the exclusive tidbits -- pictures from the set of 'TF2,' for example -- available on 'Mike's' tweet feed. Latest update: "Big news is coming down the pipeline, can't say what or when but be excited." Consider us v. excited! [From: Twitter]

Morning Xtra: Sims Creator Wright Leaves EA, Latest Google Scam, Life.com

'Sims' Creator Will Wright to Leave EA
Citing creative differences, legendary game developer Will Wright ('Sim City,' 'The Sims,' 'Spore') announced yesterday that he is leaving Electronic Arts (EA), where he has spent the past 12 years. Wright will focus full time on Stupid Fun Club, a company he founded back in 2001, where he will help create titles for devices beyond the video game console (TVs, cell phones, and home appliances). It's considered a big loss for EA, which could still be mad at not making much money on Wright's innovative but super-late, super-expensive ($50 million to make), and confusing-to-the-masses 'Spore.' [From: Wall St Journal]

Watch Out for This Latest Google Scam
If you use Google, then you've no doubt seen a mysterious pop-up window featuring 'ScottsMoneyBlog.com,' which promises to save you from debt and make you money with the handy 'Google Cash Kit,' which costs a mere $1.97, charged to your credit card. Unfortunately, the 'Google Cash Kit' is in no way affiliated with Google. According to Walletpop, folks who signed up for it are reporting repeated monthly deductions from their credit cards and no sign of a 'Cash Kit' in the mail. Check out Jane Tuv's story for a thorough explanation of the scam, along with solid tips on protecting yourself (such as using a prepaid Amex Gift Card instead of your real credit card, if you simply cannot say no to the promise of money for nothing). [From: Walletpop]

Leonard Nimoy Surprises Trekkies With First Public Screening of New 'Star Trek' Movie
Fans were already psyched to see Nimoy, who played Spock on the original 'Star Trek' series, introduce what they thought was to be a screening of 1982's 'Wrath of Khan.' Instead, they were treated to the first public screening of the 11th 'Star Trek' movie, which isn't slated to hit theaters until May 8. Excited viewers couldn't wait to share the good news on, where else, Twitter. Some started crying, while another said it "melted my pants." Okay, settle down, folks. [From: BBC]

Morning Xtra: Stern Picks BBerry Over Pre, Lohan Breaks Up via Twitter

Howard Stern Picks BlackBerry Bold Over Palm Pre
Stern stated he was finally ready to update his Treo phone, so Palm brought him a Pre in order to see if the Sirius shock jock would bite and then talk about the device on his satellite radio show. Unfortunately, according to ZDNet, it looks as though Stern picked the BlackBerry Bold over the Pre, saying it's because the former works with Lotus Notes and the latter doesn't. We're not sure if Stern got any extended hands-on with the Pre -- no one else has, so far -- but it probably would have helped sell him on the device. It's easy to pick a BlackBerry Bold since it's a finished, working product. So, Palm, if the Pre actually makes it into Oprah's hands, consider letting her really get to play with it. [From: ZDNet]

Lohan Dumps Ronson Via Twitter
If anyone needed a dialing-or-texting-under-the-influence blocker, it's Lindsay Lohan, who once again seems to be airing her dirty laundry out in public via Twitter, this time over a breakup with DJ Samantha Ronson. "I'm doing this publicly because u&ur friends call People mag" is just one of the TMI-tinged tidbits, of which you can find more at HollyScoop. Well, at least it's not corny! Morning Xtra: 'Transformers 2' Keyboard, 'Heroes' Mobile, QWERTY Qwaziness

Okay, so it's not quite morning on the East Coast anymore, but we're on West Coast time in Las Vegas, so we'll still call this the 'Morning Xtra.' As we mentioned yesterday, this week we're at CTIA, a bi-annual wireless convention where many of the latest cell phones and mobile apps are unveiled and shown. Keep checking Switched for the skinny on what your new phone (or the services on your old phone) may look like. Also, check Engadget Mobile for up-to-date hands-on reviews and news from the show. Here are some of the latest stories in wireless this week, with more to follow in the coming days.

Ugh, Another Bluetooth Headset...But Wait, This One Is Super Sexy!

We didn't think we'd ever fall for another Bluetooth headset, until we saw the just-announced Jabra HALO. The super-slim stereo Bluetooth headset is comfortable on the ears, weighs only three ounces, and has nifty design elements like a touch-sensitive volume slide and a discreetly curvy look. Plus, the thing folds up into a tiny package for throwing into your bag, or even your pocket. It's nice to see Jabra go back to its Danish design roots and deliver this winner, which is out in May for $130.

World Goes QWERTY-Qwazy -- Plenty of New Phones With Real Keyboards for Touchscreen-Haters
Even though every phone manufacturer is throwing its hat into the ring with an iPhone-like touchscreen (usually with mixed results), there are plenty of new handset options with real QWERTY keyboards. At CTIA this week, we've seen two new phones from LG aimed at the teen texting set (the Xenon, $80, and the Neon, $30, both through AT&T), the Nokia N71 (a powerful, full-featured Symbian OS smartphone with plenty of apps, a steal for $100 through AT&T), the HTC Snap (a super thin and light Windows Mobile 6.2 smartphone with an "Inner Circle" button that lets you access e-mails and texts from a filtered list of friends and family), and the super-sexy Nokia E75 (which is available for pre-order on Nokia's site). We'll update you with more of our impressions on all these phones later this week, but we just thought you should know in case you're in the market for a new smartphone. (Our fave right now? The Nokia E71x -- a serious steal!).

Morning Xtra: New Samsung Instinct, BlackBerry App Store Live, Slacker Lyrics

This week, we're at CTIA, a bi-annual wireless convention where many of the latest cell phones and mobile apps are unveiled and shown. Keep checking Switched for the skinny on what your new phone (or the services on your old phone) may look like. Also, check Engadget Mobile for up-to-date hands-on reviews and news from the show. Here are some of the latest stories in wireless this week, with more to follow in the coming days.

Samsung Instinct S30 Announced
The slimmer, lighter and sexier successor to Samsung's Instinct (pictured above) will be out in the next two weeks with Sprint. Even though it's hard for us to take seriously any 'smart' phone that isn't a BlackBerry or an iPhone, we tried out the keypad on this baby yesterday and found it to be refreshingly responsive and accurate, which is really saying something in these days of touch-screen-glut. Check out Engadget Mobile for video and images.

Morning Xtra: Free College Education, Clicky Keyboards, Real 'Razor' Phone

Because we can't always cover all the great news in depth, we here at Switched are starting a new AM feature, which recaps other important stories we may not have hit earlier in morning. Welcome to our sixth edition of the Switched Morning Extra.

Free College Education at YouTube!

Well, sort of. YouTube today launched YouTube Edu, an online hub for the various free videos offered by more than 100 colleges and universities around the country. Sure, some of the videos are just informational, but plenty include actual academic content, including lectures, classes, and mini-documentaries (such as the riveting University of Minnesota's 'Science of Watchmen' and Stanford's 'Mobile Phone Orchestra,' above). Academic videos are all the rage, the WSJ points out, with similar site Academic Earth (videos from Harvard, Yale, MIT and others) launching earlier this week. [From Wall St Journal]

Chinese 'Razor' Phone an Actual Razor
Not, that's not a big mic you see on the bottom of this cell phone -- it's a combination electric razor and 2-megapixel camera phone. The phone also fits two-SIM cards, for different phone numbers. Is this the greatest idea since the Blu-ray-player-cum-VHS-VCR? No! [From: ShinyShiny]
