Obnoxious Banner Ads Turn 15 Years Old, No One Cares

The banner advertisement is getting older. On Tuesday, the former revenue generator once plastered across many a Web page, turned 15 years old. But, according to Silicon Alley Insider, it's not aging gracefully. Banners, which debuted by plugging companies like Volvo and AT&T on the site Hotwired, peaked in the mid-'90s with a click-through rate of 78-percent. Now, a mere 8-percent of Internet users are responsible for 85-percent of the clicks on all banners.

Despite the banner ad's recent struggles, one of the men behind the idea, Frank D'Angelo, told Advertising Age that the online advertising market wouldn't be what it is today (a $24 billion market) without the banner ad. D'Angelo is certainly looking on the bright side of things, as the stats suggest 'shooting the ducks' have become obsolete. Frankly, it's embarrassing to think of a time when ad revenue was dependent on clicks, especially with the explosion and subsequent exploitation of Twitter by advertisers. Firefox Hits One Billion Downloads

It's time for a cyber celebration, folks. Mozilla's popular Firefox browser, which launched in 2002, reached the 1 billion download mark today, making the browser akin to McDonald's Big Mac in popularity.

According to TechCrunch, Mozilla will mark the occasion by launching a new site, www.onebillionplusyou.com (going live on Monday), that will display photos and information about folks who love and use Firefox for their surfing needs. TechCrunch reports that about 30–percent of all people who access the Internet do so with Firefox while about 54-percent use Internet Explorer. That's a dramatic increase when you see consider that about 90-percent used Internet Explorer only a few years ago.

Compact Disc Turns 30


We're not quite sure how much related celebrating went on this past weekend, but the iconic Compact Disc managed to hit the big three-oh. The IEEE was credited with presenting its prestigious IEEE Milestone Award to Royal Philips Electronics for its contribution to the development of the CD, and as the story goes, the award coincides with the 30th anniversary of the "historic demonstration of the first CD prototype codenamed 'Pinkeltje' on March 8th, 1979." While many would argue that the CD is on its way out in favor of smaller, highly portable MP3 files, the disc has definitely left a lasting mark on the industry. To date, over 3.5 billion audio CD players have been sold alongside 240 billion discs. Oh, and not to be a Debbie Downer or anything, but what are the chances that we won't be throwing an "over the hill" party for this here format?

UN Report: 6 in 10 People Worldwide Use Cell Phones


Outfits like Nokia have been just rolling in profits from selling oodles of low margin handsets in developing nations across the globe, so it's no shock at all to hear that those very countries have propelled the worldwide usage tally well above the 50 percent mark. According to a wide-ranging United Nations report, around six in ten people across the globe now use mobile phones, and as expected, fixed line subscriptions have increased at a much slower pace. If you're wondering just how significant this figure really is, chew on this: in 2002, just under 15 percent of the global population used a cellie. Impressive, eh?

UN Chief Predicts Four Billion Cell Phone Subscriptions By 2009


No need to adjust your set -- the United Nations communications chief has boldly predicted that half of planet Earth's population will be hooked on some sort of mobile phone before 2009 dawns. Granted, the numbers he's talking about do look strictly at subscriptions, so a small percentage will be skewed by those with multiple accounts (and thus, multiple numbers), but really, the forecast isn't all that outlandish. After all, we already hit 3.3 billion mobile phone subscriptions back in November of last year (and 4 billion lines overall).

As predicted, it's growth in developing regions such as Africa and the Middle East which will boost the overall figure the most, with yearly increases in those areas expected to hit 27-percent and 25-percent, respectively. So, what are the chances a post eerily similar to this pops up in 2012 or so saying the entire world has a cellphone? Our trusty Magic 8-ball says "Signs Point to Yes."
