'Splinter Cell' Meets 'Keyboard Cat' (When Good Games Go Viral)

While the rest of you are heading off with your families for a pleasant, pre-fall long weekend, serious game geeks are in Seattle at the Penny Arcade Expo, a video game convention for the die-hard. Premiering today, Ubisoft showed its new ad for 'Splinter Cell: Conviction,' featuring the tough guy protagonist Sam Fisher getting played off by none other than that electronic maestro himself (or herself), Keyboard Cat.

That darn cat makes it everywhere, it seems, and instead of pulling out all the stops to show in-game depth or features, the PAX promo aims for LOLs over substance. Somewhere, Tom Clancy is very, very confused. [From: Joystiq]

Ben Huh and His Lucrative Empire of LOLcats

Ben Huh not only has one of the most appropriate names on the Net, but easily one of the greatest jobs, as well. [Ed. Note: The writer still thinks ICanHasCheezburger is funny.] Huh owns the company Pet Holdings, and under its random, hilarious, of-the-moment blogs, he administers FailBlog.org, Cheezburger, canine counterpart IHasAHotdog, and EngrishFunny. His collection of sites may not have spawned Internet catch-phrases like 'Epic Win' or 'LOLcats', but they certainly have capitalized on them.

Huh told Time.com, "There's no way on the planet this should actually work. But it's working." He is referring to his 10.4 million unique visitors, which helped Pet Holdings to earn seven figures in the first six months of 2009. Then there's the merchandising. The 'ICHC' book was on the New York Times Bestseller's list for 13 weeks last winter, and Huh's sites have generated such diverse enterprises as: LOLspeak kitchen magnets, FailBlog's YouTube channels, and have even inspired a musical debuting in New York this week based on the pidgin-speaking kitties. Warner Music Group Plays Off Keyboard Cat

For those readers who don't find cats playing keyboards with Stevie Wonder-like swagger hilarious, today, you'll see justice. Keyboard Cat (one of the Internet's most baffling viral videos featuring a passive cat pounding out jams on a keyboard) is being challenged by Warner Music Group. Amongst some of Keyboard Cat's greatest hits is an edited video of Helen Hunt in the eighties film 'Desperate Lives' mixed, randomly, with 'You Make My Dreams Come True' by pop-rockers Hall & Oates.

Apparently, Warner Music Group doesn't think the blue-shirted feline is a good accompaniment with the tune, and has pulled the audio of the smooth '80s rockers from YouTube. Wired.com points out that the viral phenomenon of Fatso the Cat (RIP) is suddenly giving Hall & Oates a surge in popularity amongst Internet jokesters, something Warner should appreciate.

'Keyboard Cat' Spreading Painful Hilarity Across the Web

During our quest to stay abreast of the latest Web memes -- and to break up the doldrums of your day with some comic relief -- it has been impossible to ignore the explosion of "Play him off, keyboard cat" videos. If you're not familiar with this cute little virtuoso, keyboard cat interrupts awkward and painful moments with some sweet, jazzy piano riffs. The original video was created by Brad O'Farrell, using an old clip from graphic designer Charlie Schmidt. Inspired by O'Farrell's creation, YouTube users everywhere have taken to crafting their own videos featuring the feline sensation.

Bacon Craze Latest 'Meme' to Sweep the Web

For those who don't follow Internet trends, 'meme' refers to an idea or joke that becomes widely popular on the Internet, especially once it spreads to non-Internet-savvy groups, such as politicians. Some notable recent memes include RickRoll, LOLCats, Chuck Norris "facts" and pretty much any video of an annoying kid doing something ridiculous on YouTube. The latest meme-du-jour, or flavor of the day? Bacon.

A recent story in The Los Angeles Times investigates the smorgasbord of bacon-related products inundating the Web, including: an alarm clock perfect for TV boss Michael Scott, iPhone carrying cases, and even a bacon bra. Some of the ideas seem like extreme experiments in self-control, or torture. For example, the bacon lampshade sounds delicious, especially once the heat from the bulb starts warming up the pork, resulting in an irresistible aroma wafting throughout the house. Mmmmm, bacon.

Seeking to explain bacon mania, Mark Milian of the L.A. Times approached several industry insiders for help. One, Bonny Giardina, a chef instructor for the Hipcook school in L.A., explained, "Everything tastes better with bacon," adding that even vegetarians "always say 'The hardest thing I have to gIve up.. is bacon'". But, why? Mr. Baconpants, a commenter on the original article, nails it, in our humble opinion. He says, "[The] reason that bacon is so popular is because almost everyone LOVES bacon. And since we are living in a time where healthy eating is almost government mandated people want to rebel. Bacon is our symbol of freedom in the fight to eat what we want." Give us bacon, or give us death!

'FAIL' an Increasingly Mainstream Term, From Wall St to Washington

Aren't you just so proud when you see an Internet meme go mainstream? Perhaps even more impressive than your dad Rickrolling you (u just got PWND, BTW), FAIL has finally hit the big time, showing up on network news programs, mainstream Web sites, and even the Senate floor. (That last one was probably the most satisfying: During Ben Bernanke and Henry Paulson's testimony before the Senate banking committee last month, someone in the crowd held up a piece of paper with FAIL written on it.)

Slate.com tackles the issue with gusto, tracing the roots of the meme back to its earliest days on Internet message boards. From the piece:
The highest form of fail -- the epic fail -- involves not just catastrophic failure but hubris as well. Not just coming in second in a bike race but doing so because you fell off your bike after prematurely raising your arms in victory. Totaling your pickup not because the brakes failed but because you were trying to ride on the windshield. Not just destroying your fish tank but doing it while trying to film yourself lifting weights.
How awesome is it when kids talking smack on 'World of Warcraft' forums have an impact on American political culture? [From: Slate]

LOLCats, Rick Rolling and Other 'Net Trends Celebrated at ROFLCon

ROFLCon Brings Internet Memes to Real LifeIf you've ever laughed at a LOLCat or been the victim of a vicious Rick Rolling, then you've helped to perpetuate one of the countless memes that are sweeping the Internet daily. A meme is just a silly Internet fad, usually appearing one day and totally passé the next, its transience powered by the speed of the 'Net. But, last weekend many of those memes earned a bit of respect in the real world at the first ever ROFLCon -- a convention honoring funny Internet trends -- in Cambridge, Mass.

On display were seminars on how to make money from memes (called: "YOU CAN GET PAID FOR THIS?"), a case-study on LOLCats called "I Can Haz Case Study?", and some that were slightly more serious, like one on the social structures of the cult followings memes achieve. Urlesque was there and went around asking many of the personalities at the Con to fill in the blank: "I Can Has _______?" Photos were taken of the responses for great humor, posted in a gallery here, and we've posted our favorite to the right there. What's yours? [Source: Urlesque]
