Dressed as Pokémon, Man Proposes to His Pikachu in Public

Public Pokémon Proposal is Dorkiest Ever

Between the hacked versions of 'Chrono Trigger,' the hidden messages in Google Street View, and the adorably lame Twitter messages, we figured the battle for geekiest marriage proposal would never end. But then we came across this video (after the jump) of Chris Herbert proposing to his girlfriend, Belle Starenchak... while at an anime convention... dressed as Pokémon. Check and mate.

Herbert popped the question by opening a Poké Ball, revealing a ring to his bride-to-be, who was dressed as Pikachu. Herbert himself was dolled up like Raichu -- apparently another Pokémon who exists outside of our Poké lexicon. Starenchak said yes in front of a crowd gathered at Anime Weekend Atlanta, eliciting cheers from the nerds in attendance.

Dorky Don Juan Proposes During 'Super Mario World' Session

When we finished watching this video (after the break) on Geek Sugar, we were a little surprised by our reactions. Sure, it's easy to make fun of this dude for: one, proposing to his girl in front of the living room TV (while she's playing 'Super Mario World,' no less); two, setting up a video camera to capture it; and, three, posting said video to YouTube. But the look in his eye, her immediate "Yes!," their embrace, and that little dog jumping up and down illustrates domestic bliss so idyllic that it's downright Rockwellian. Call us hopeless, but we think this pair of players is bound for some high scores. [From: Geek Sugar]

Couple Weds With 'Katamari'-Themed Wedding

In the era of viral video, not only does a bride and groom have to worry about seating arrangements and bouquet tossing, but also how their nuptials will hold up on the Web. With the intensity of 'Star Wars' weddings, or last week's runaway hit of JK's Wedding Entrance Dance, if a couple wants their vows to make a splash on the Internet, they've got to have the serious nerd credentials.

So when Aidra and Ernest took their -- and a good portion of the world's -- favorite video game and themed a wedding around it, complete with wacky head pieces and xkcd.com nerd reference on the invitation. Yes, a 'Katamari Damacy'-themed wedding, with a Katamari ball as the cake topper, and Aidra and Ernest being rolled up.

Man Hires Someone on Craigslist to Rape His Wife

Craigslist just keeps taking one hit after another. There has been, of course, the "Craigslist Killer," and the Illinois sheriff sued the site, alleging it promotes and facilitates prostitution. And who could forget that Connecticut's attorney general recently sent a letter to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster, requesting the erotic services section be removed from the site?

As if all that negative publicity weren't enough, ABC News reports that a North Carolina man has been charged with hiring a man via Craigslist to rape his wife. The woman called 911 on Sunday, telling police that a man wielding a knife had raped her in her bedroom. After a preliminary investigation that did not yield signs of a break-in, police suspected that the husband could have played some role in the crime. Allegedly, he had watched while the brutal scene unfolded.

The husband, whose name has not been released so as to protect the victim, has been charged with first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sexual offense, and one count of attempted first-degree sexual offense. He has been jailed with a $200,000 bond. In ABC's piece, no mention was made of the man with the knife.

Another Geek Uses an iPhone to Propose

Another Geek Proposes with iPhone App
We're beginning to feel a little inadequate here. We've got another elaborate geeky marriage proposal that has us hoping our significant others aren't reading our Web site.

Bryan Haggerty, a user interface designer at professional social networking site LinkedIn, proposed to his girlfriend Jeannie Choe using a custom-built iPhone Web app. The app, called 'Romantech,' led Choe on a scavenger hunt around San Francisco, complete with with video clues from her beau.

The points on the map eventually formed a <3, or caret heart shape, ending in Dolores Park where Bryan was waiting. Obviously, he then popped the question.

It's adorable and quite inventive, but we're afraid that the wealth of elaborate proposals will lead people to believe that all of us geeks are that creative and romantic. It's a lot of pressure. [From: Wired]

Woman Divorces Husband Over 'Second Life' Tryst

UK Woman Divorces Husband Over 'Second Life' Tryst
Another day, another marriage ruined by the Internet. Not surprisingly, the online virtual world 'Second Life,' in particula,r seems to be destroying the holy bond of matrimony every chance it gets.

We can add the tale of UK couple John and Lisa Best to the list of reports of 'Second Life' infidelity leading to divorce. The mindbogglingly-careless John was laying in bed with his wife when he was caught having an online dalliance as his avatar, Troy Hammerthal. In case the name weren't enough of an obvious clue, then this next bit should do the trick: Turns out his virtual tryst was with another man.

Lisa awoke and quietly observed John on his laptop for a few moments before confronting him about the "gay dungeon romps." John, of course, immediately slammed his laptop shut and later defended himself saying that he was doing it, "for a laugh," and denied being gay.

Marryoke Turns Your Wedding Into a Movie Musical

Advice for the guys out there -- if your bride to-be mentions the words "4 Life Films" or "Marryoke," run for the hills.

Jennifer Page, a former producer for the BBC, runs 4 Life Films, a wedding video production company that specializes in novelty wedding videos, dubbed Marryoke. The videos are elaborate productions in which the bride and groom -- the wedding party fills out the supporting cast -- take staring roles in short musical films. In the video above, Andrew Coates and his wife Caroline dance through the streets and lip sync to 'That's How You Know' from Disney's 'Enchanted.' Andrew and Caroline even had to cut the ceremonies short to leave extra time for filming.

Packages start at £595 (about $850) but can cost up to £1,995 (almost $2,850). Good thing wedding guests usually sing and dance for free! [From: Telegraph]

Geek Proposes With Vintage Super Nintendo Game

The past few weeks have seen an explosion in super geeky marriage proposals. One IT supervisor from California went with an iPhone application, while Web geek Sean Bonner scored our favorite marriage request ever with a proposal via Twitter.

The latest in the fad of dork-tacular marriage proposals comes in a close second to Bonner's, if only because of its sheer nerdiness. A YouTube user, who goes by the name of TheRealPfhreak, hacked the ROM (basically a playable digital copy) of the Super Nintendo classic 'Chrono Trigger' and created a whole new area in the game for his girlfriend to explore. That's right, he hacked apart the game and added his own content, which is no simple task. He recreated Mount Baker in Washington (the site of their first date) in the game and littered the mountain side with NPCs (non-player characters) who reminisced about some of the couple's favorite memories together.

At the top of the mountain a knight named Phill introduces himself and rambles sappily about once having tried to catch the Sun for his maiden. Phill the knight then just blurts out a proposal. Apparently, TheRealPfhreak's now-fiancee responded by saying, "you're such a nerd," before giving him and enthusiastic "yes." Check out the clip above and visit the YouTube page for the creator's complete explanation (and a strangely alluring soundtrack). [From: YouTube, Via: OhGizmo!]

Man Proposes Using iPhone Application, Woman Says Yes

A few months ago, we told about you told you about eight men who proposed using tech. Now, we can add yet another geek to the list. Dan Deeble, a 35-year-old IT supervisor from Antelope, CA, popped the question using Scribular, a free iPhone app that works with the phone's GPS to let users leave notes at specific locations. Once somebody gets to the location, they can read the note, which is how Deeble got his girlfriend, Crystal Gardner, to go on a scavenger hunt around Sacramento.

It started with a Post-it note in her car, telling her to use Scribular on her way to work. For the rest of the day, she drove around finding different notes -- read them here -- that all ended with "p.s. - I love you." The phrase comes from the movie of the same name, about a woman getting love letters from her deceased husband, which was the first movie Deeble and Gardner saw together. At the end of the day, the couple met at a restaurant where a phone call from her sister prompted her to read the final note: "Almost one year ago, I found you -- and I found love.... I ask if you will grant me the greatest privilege of my life and marry me. Forever yours, Dan." She responded "of course I will," and techies around the globe got another idea for romance. Best Marriage Proposal Ever, Via Twitter

Best Marriage Proposal Ever, Via Twitter.

We officially have a new favorite geeky marriage proposal. Sorry, 'Bejewed' guy.

We've seen proposals via search engines, engraved iPods, and even a Dashboad Widget. But nothing, and we mean nothing, could possibly top the IM-esque Twitter proposal of Sean Bonner to Tara Brown. On Friday afternoon Bonner sent out a Tweet, for all the world to see, that read, "@tarabrown so, um... wanna get hitched?" Brown replied swiftly with a question of her own (and an affirmative answer to his), "@seanbonner over Twitter? or IRL? (either way, helllzzzzz yes!)" Which, of course, elicited an enthusiastic "w00t!" from Bonner.

Congratulations to you both. And you can read Bonner's personal blog if you want to keep up to date on the adorably geeky couple. [From: Boing Boing]

Man Who Proposed Via 'Bejeweled' Game Finally Weds Bride IRL

In the "oh no they didn't" category or geekdom, computer programmer Bernie Peng married his bride-to-be Tammy Li in New Jersey over the weekend. What made it so special? Peng popped the question to his girlfriend in arguably the nerdiest way possible: He spent a month reprogramming Li's Sfavorite game, 'Bejeweled,' so that when she reached a certain score a ring and a marriage proposal popped up.

Good news all around: When Li hit the score, she accepted the marriage proposal, and Peng posted the event on his blog. Over the next several months, he received thousands of hits on his blog and news of the cyber-courtship spread around the Web.

All of which was followed by a cool gesture (and ridiculously good marketing opportunity) by PopCap Games -- the creator of 'Bejeweled' -- which actually offered to help pay for the wedding. And it did, providing a cake in the shape of a videogame console, and giving away free copies of the game as wedding favors. [From: NJ.com]

Apple Co-Founder Marries Someone Other Than Kathy Griffin

Woz Ties the KnotCongratulations to Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computers, who tied the knot last weekend with his fiancée, who several outlets are making perfectly clear is not, repeat not, Kathy Griffin.

The name of Woz's new wife has not been released, but we think she must be a huge dork (we mean that in the best way possible) -- the ceremony was held at SegwayFest 2008. We're sure Woz will hold on to this one, a girl who will even go near a Segway, not to mention get wed at an event celebrating the crazy two-wheeled thing, is rare.

So best wishes to them both. Shine on you crazy diamonds! [Source: GeekSugar]

Get Married in Space for Just $2M

Getting your ashes shot into space when you die is so 2007. The space fad for 2008 is weddings! Or at least signing up for them. A Japanese company called First Advantage has joined forces with an American aerospace firm called Rocketplane to offer weddings 100 kilometers (62 miles) above earth. First Advantage now joins Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic in the space-marriage racket.

The $2 million covers not only the flight on the Rocket Plane XP, but also a ground-based party where friends and family can watch a live stream of the zero-G ceremony. The company will even even throw in a wedding dress! The first ceremonies will take place in 2011, beginning with the wedding of Cindy Cashman, entrepreneur and author, and Mitch Walling. Laptop Cakes Pay Homage to Internet Dating

Shockingly enough, the image you see above isn't as radical as you probably think. Just last year we saw a San Francisco couple profess their inexplicable love for TiVo with a his and her cake arrangement, while another treated guests to a flavorful version of their wedding day playlist. This perky pair, however, decided to create cakes that would visually describe just how they ended up together, complete with on-screen profiles and a crossover cable (or something) with a heart along the way. Gives a whole new meaning to the networking category, now doesn't it? [Source: Make: Blog]

Eight Best Techie Marriage Proposals

Aside from buying a ring, asking her father's permission, and stressing over her answer, one of the hardest parts of a marriage proposal for a man is coming up with a unique way to do it. Luckily, technology offers up a slew of options and -- starting below -- we recount the tales of eight creatively geeky guys who found new ways to pop the question. If you're the sentimental type, now's the time to break out the Kleenex.

So There Are Rewards for Playing Video Games

Knowing your girlfriend's favorite hobbies is a great start for planning a proposal. For Bernie Peng, that meant using the game 'Bejeweled' to ask Tammy Li to marry him. Peng, a financial software programmer, spent a month tweaking the game so when Li reached a certain score, a ring and the proposal popped up on the screen. We know what you're thinking, and so does Peng – "I thought it was pretty cool, in a nerdy way," he said. Fortunately for him, she said yes.
