Man Builds Pan Am Jet Cabin Replica in His Garage

For today's frugal travelers, it might be hard to imagine a time when commercial flights were luxurious. But that's just what Pan Am offered back in the day. Anthony Toth, a global sales director at United Airlines, fell in love with this high-altitude decadence at an early age while flying to visit family in Europe. Now, Toth has taken his love to new heights.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Toth spent more than $50,000 recreating a first-class cabin from a Pan Am World Airways 747 in his garage. For 20 years, Toth has collected vintage Pan Am gear -- from headphones to a coffee maker -- by salvaging parts from retired airplanes that are dumped in the Mojave Desert. The end result is a nearly exact replica (There is that flat-screen TV.) of a '70s-era jet cabin. There's original reclining seats, overhead compartments, and a red, carpeted staircase. What he couldn't find, he recreated as accurately as possible (e.g., the faux Pan Am boarding passes).

Australian Rock Band Jet Collaborates Online, Loves YouTube

Recently, Aussie garage band Jet answered some of our questions about texting, YouTubing, and touring. When brothers Nic and Chris Chester, along with bandmates Cameron Muncey and Mark Wilson aren't on the road, they are either listening to Hall & Oates (so are we!) on their iPods at 5 o'clock in the morning or cracking up to old videos of a toasted Orson Welles. The boys, clad in leather jackets, sporting shaggy hair, and getting ready to release their fourth album this week (August 25), answered our most burning question: Does your phone ever go off on stage?

Truck Plus Jet Engine Equals Fastest Pickup Truck Ever

For those in the firm grip of a midlife crisis but unable to forego the practical requirements of hauling stuff around town, there is perhaps no better way to satiate your need for speed than a fast pickup truck. And when we say fast, we mean 2700 HP fast.

Just ask Chris Lentz, who strapped an M-701 turbojet to his Ford F-150 pickup to create such a monster for himself.

The Ride of a Lifetime: Man Adds Dual Jet Engines to Bike

Lots of folks have hobbies. For example, take Bob Maddox -- an artist and cabinetmaker from Oregon. Maddox likes to build stuff. Not that unusual of a hobby, right? But combine that with his love of pulse jet engines, and, well, you can see where this is going.

Maddox recently reached speeds of 73 mph on a bicycle powered by dual pulse jet engines, according to Wired.com. His high-speed creation is straight out of a child's fantasy. Maddox strapped two 60-pound thrust engines, capable of bursting eardrums and peeling back eyelids, to the side of a cruiser bicycle frame. With only the protection of a red helmet and brown leather jacket, he tore down the asphalt like he was shot out of a cannon.

Man Flies Over Alps with Backpack Jet

Remember yesterday's tantalizing pictures of a backpack-worn jet-powered wing? Today we've got one better: Video of a man wearing a similar device and flying through the air. This is earlier test footage of Yves Rossy, who yesterday jumped out of a small plane with his custom wing strapped to his back, then throttled up and flew over the Swiss Alps.

Rossy was able to top 186 miles-per-hour, which enabled him to maintain altitude and even fly. His wing is powered by two jet engines of the type used to power large model aircraft and has no movable controls, meaning he steers it entirely by moving his body. He has been revising the design of the wing for years, but yesterday's flight was its first public demonstration (the video above is from an earlier, private test).

Despite some similarities, this is not the same as the EXO-Wing shown yesterday, and with this demonstration, we're not so sure the EXO's "world's smallest human-piloted jet" designation still applies. [Source: AOL News]

New Supersonic Passenger Jet - The A2

New Super Sonic Passenger Jet - The A2
What's big, green, and flies through the air at incredible speeds? No, not the Hulk being carried by Superman (we know, comic dorks, one is DC, one is Marvel, relax), but the new A2 supersonic jet.

Dubbed the "son of Concorde", the jet will revolutionize air travel if it ever takes flight. The large, windowless vehicle looks more like a missile than a passenger plane -- and moves more like one too. The aircraft will reach a top speed of Mach 5 (Go Speed Racer!), twice as fast as the now-retired Concorde supersonic airliner, and can fly from London to Sydney, Australia in under 5 hours -- less than quarter of current flight times. Even better, the engines will run on liquid hydrogen, meaning the only exhaust will be water vapor and nitrous oxide, so the carbon footprint of the jet will be negligible.

On a slightly random note, it appears that someone at the Daily Mail has a bit of an obsession with 'The Thunderbirds.' This is the second article in two days to reference the campy, action, puppet show. Weird.

Under the Hood of the 787 Dreamliner

The Tech of the 787

Boeing's 787 is almost here and it's packed full of technological advances. The fuselage and wing will be made of a composite material, which makes the plane lighter and therefore much more fuel efficient. Besides being more environmentally-conscious and good for an airline's bottom line, better fuel efficiency also means that longer flights are possible. And, by using a fuselage that's one giant piece, Boeing has eliminated the need for some 1,500 aluminum sheets and 40,000 - 50,000 fasteners.

The software behind the plane is also incredibly advanced. An open architecture system lies at the heart it, which means easier extensibility down the road. For example, Boeing has been looking at incorporating self-monitoring systems that will allow the airplane to report to ground crews about what repairs are needed and when. The 787 also gives the commercial air pilot a heads up display (HUD) similar to those used by fighter pilots to aid in landing and navigation.

According to Boeing, the engines commissioned from Rolls Royce and General Electric have increased efficiency by 8 percent and are basically a generation ahead of anything else out there.

The 787 may be slow to get off the ground but it is certainly an impressive piece of machinery.
