Best iPod-Enabled Alarm Clock Radio: Cambridge Soundworks i765

A reader writes: I want a decent-sounding audiophile table radio that can not only handle my iPod, but also wake me up in the morning! The Bose Wave radio II looks nice, but I'm not sure I want to spend more than $300 on this. Just tell me what to get!

Sure, Bose's Wave radio II sounds great, but do you really want to shell out $350 for a high-end clock radio that doesn't interface directly with your iPod? Likewise, Tivoli Audio's $400 iYiYi looks and sounds as nice as it gets it gets for a table radio/alarm clock, but just don't count on it waking you up (its snooze button is hard to find when you're half asleep). And the other options – from companies such as Griffin, iHome, and iLuv – may look nice, but they don't stack up sound-quality-wise. So, which hi-fi table radio to pick? To us, the choice is clear: Cambridge Soundworks i765 'High Performance HD iPod/DVD Entertainment System' is every bit as feature-packed and aurally-satisfying as its pricier rivals, and yet can be purchase for as little as $200 (with the right rebates/mark-downs).

Essentially an iPod-video-enabled version of the company's line of high-performance table/clock radios, the i765 has all the features you'd expect from the category, including two speakers and a built-in subwoofer that can handle stereo or wide/surround-sound-like configurations (as well as precise and deep bass, even at high volume levels). Output and input jacks let you play music from non-iPod devices (like your cell phone or computer) and plug in additional speakers, respectively.

Take Care When Purchasing an iPod FM Transmitter

When getting an iPod FM transmitter, look for versions that connect via the dock plug instead of the audio jack; the audio is line-level and therefore of poorer quality. Plus, if it has a cigarette lighter adapter, you'll be able to charge while it plays. Because the antenna is in the cable, extending it will get you better reception than keeping it wrapped up and close to the stereo will.

Jean-Michel Jarre Designed iPod Speakers Hit France

There's certainly no shortage of eye-catching iPod docks / speaker systems to choose from, but this new so-called AeroSystem is the only one to get Jean-Michel Jarre's stamp of approval, and that's enough to get at least a few folks to take notice (though we'll personally stick with our Joy Division Zune). In addition to being a conversation starter, the speaker unit also look to be capable enough audio-wise, with it packing two 20W RMS speakers and a 45W RMS subwoofer into its retro-inspired enclosure, plus a USB port and a 3.5mm jack to complement the requisite iPod dock connector. As far as these things go, it's also not too ridiculously expensive, with it running €450 (or close to $580), though you'll likely spend a bit more than that if you hope to get one of these out of France.

Retro Jukebox iPod Dock Costs Over 10 G's

As gadgets get more advanced, they tend to get smaller. Some people, however, still yearn for the past when bigger still meant better. If you fall into that category, you might want the Xi Jukebox, a 1950's looking iPod dock that's made for any fans of the Fonz.

The size isn't just for looks, though. Inside this handcrafted baby you get an Mk7 Twin channel amplifier that cranks out 150 watts per channel via two tweeters, two mid range speakers, and a 12" twin cone bass speaker. There's also an LED screen that plays videos and shows album art and photos, and this beast also comes with light tubes that change color depending on your preference.

The catch with all this is the price, which is currently set at £5,800 (about $10,700 US). It's all made in England too, so you might not be able to get one of here either, as they weigh almost 300 pounds. The worst part is that it doesn't take any money, so you can't get your guests to slowly pay it off with quarters and singles. [Source: OhGizmo!]

Hands-on Review: Boston Acoustics iDS-2 iPod Speaker Dock

review boston acoustics ids2

It seems that not a day goes by when some new iPod speaker dock doesn't come out, but only so often do such products come from loudspeaker companies that have been around since the days of cassettes and LPs. Bose and B&W have offered up their models, but only now is Boston Acoustics getting into the iPod speaker game with this week's release of the i-DS2, a simple, one-piece iPod speaker dock from Boston Acoustics -- it's the first iPod dock from the company, in fact.

We got to try a model out this week and were impressed. Side-by-side with the much more expensive Bose SoundDock (which has been our favorite shoebox-sized iPod Dock until now), the i-DS2 actually sounds better (at least on the bass end) and louder -- and only costs $180.

It didn't quite outshine the much bigger, Hindenburg-shaped B&W Zeppelin, which can really fill a large room, sound-wise, but it's also about $400 less expensive (the Zeppelin is about $600).

Besides the all-white model we saw, the i-DS2 has customizable speaker grilles thanks to the Boston Acoustics Personal Options Plan (P.O.P.), which offers about six or seven different color options with ridiculous names like Chocolat (for brown) and Chili (for some kind of hot red). It also comes, of course, with adapters for all types of iPods, including the iPhone. Our only beef is that this thing is plug-in-only, so you can't really take it out to the yard or deck with you.

If you're looking for a sub-$200 compact iPod speaker dock with the ability to blast clear mid-range and thumping bass at high levels, you won't go wrong with the i-DS2, which is ideal for dorm rooms, small apartments, offices, or the den.

New High-End iPod Dock/Radio from Cue

New High-End iPod Dock/Radio from Cue

These days one has no shortage of things in which to set his iPod. There's a keyboard dock, an old guitar, a faux-turntable, even a toilet paper roll (we wish we were kidding about that last one). At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, which opens next week, new entrant to the electronics market Cue Accoustics will debut yet another thing to set your iPods into -- a much more stylish and practical choice than the above options.

It's called the Cue Radio and is a simple yet sophisticated looking device. On top is the ubiquitous iPod universal dock for cradling your favorite gadget. Inside is an AM/FM tuner, so the thing will still pump out some tunes even when said dock is empty. With only three dials the thing is a cinch, and though it appears to only have one speaker, it's intended to be the "best table radio in its class."

That potentially puts it up against some stiff competition from the likes of B&W, Bose, and Cambridge Soundworks, but just which class it falls within depends on the price, something we'll have to wait until next week to find out.

Bose iPod Dock Goes Portable

New Bose SoundDock PortableWe all know Bose makes some fantastic sounding, and fantastically expensive speakers. Since its introduction in 2004, the company's iPod dock has pretty much become the standard for those who care more about sound and less about their wallets. Now, a portable version has been introduced.

The new $399 SoundDock Portable has a rechargeable lithium ion battery (like the kind laptops have) that allows you to carry it outside and away from an outlet. According to this USA Today hands-on review, the portable's sound is just as good as its wall-dependent companion, and battery life is fairly impressive. It is important to note though, that using the built-in equalizer or turning up the volume will result in seriously reduced battery life. While Bose claims the dock can run for up to 10 hours on a charge at "moderate" volumes, that quickly drops to three hours at full blast. Also nice is the fact that it works with iPhone. Though, who knows if it'll work with the new iPods we suspect will be announced on Tuesday (fingers crossed)?
