Man Arrested After Using New iPod Nano to Peep Up Girl's Skirt

Only weeks after Apple unveiled its new iPod Nano, a Japanese man has become the first person to be arrested using the device for an illegal, and creepy, activity. According to Fuckedgaijin, the unidentified Kobe man was arrested after using the new Nano's video camera function to peek up an 18-year-old girl's skirt. While in a bookstore, the peeping-tom somehow hid the iPod in his shoe, and placed it near enough to the unsuspecting girl to get a glimpse.

There's no word on just how this voyeur was caught. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding? After all, maybe he just didn't have any pockets and needed some place to store his iPod? But this story might mean this chain of gyms was onto something when it banned the new iPods on its premises. [From: Fuckedgaijin, via The Awl]

Girl Almost Dies Saving iPod

We all like our gadgets. Still, even though we can't imagine our morning commute without our trusty MP3 player, there's no way we're risking our lives for it. Then again, we're not 16-years old.

A Tampa teenage girl was almost killed on Tuesday when she tried to save her beloved iPod from certain doom. While crossing the street, she noticed she had dropped her iPod Nano in the road. Instead of saying a quiet prayer for the health of her musical companion, she blindly rushed into oncoming traffic -- this, we imagine, greatly dissatisfied the driver of the pickup truck driver that subsequently plowed into her, leaving her with a broken leg and untold damage to the truck.

So remember kids/adults: An iPod is replaceable, even in this economy. If you have to... just let it go. [From:Twirlit]

Elton John and Swarovski Team Up for Bling-y iPods

Elton John and Swarovski Team Up for Colorful, Jewel Encrusted iPods
We've seen plenty of gaudy gadgets covered in bling: iPhone cases, cell phones, ear buds, even espresso machines, have been encrusted with jewels and gold. There is one thing all of those glitzy gizmos lacked, however, and that is the endorsement of the king of glam, Mr. 'Tantrums and Tiaras' himself, Elton John.

Swarovski and Sir John have teamed up to offer jewel-encrusted iPod Nanos, in the full range of colors, with a sizable 12.5-percent of the profit going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. These fabulous iPods come loaded with 'Rocket Man: The Definitive Hits' and feature an engraving of the pop legend's signature on the back.

Of course, you pay a premium for the honor of owning such a thing. $565 gets you the 8-gigabyte (GB) model, while the 16-GB fetches a jaw-dropping $636 (converted from British Pounds). [From: Luxist]

Cassette Tape Holder For iPod Looks Ridiculously Cool

Analog music... Consider this the ultimate pimp slap...

Contexture Design, a Vancouver-based company, has created an iPod Nano case made out of recycled cassette tapes. Daaaamn, '80, you just got plaaaayed... We hadn't even seen a cassette tape in five years when we stumbled across this retro gem. The Nano gently snuggles into the remodeled Maxell cassette, providing protection to your pricey MP3 player while literally and figuratively burying an entire era of musical technology. Good times!

There are severely limited numbers of this sweet little item, so act quickly...If you have $45 laying around. [From: TUAW]

Apple Unveils New iPods, iTunes Upgrades, and HD Television Shows

As most in the online blogosphere had been predicting, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today announced a bunch of new updates, additions, and replacements to the iPod and iTunes family. Fellow AOL Tech blog Engadget was there live blogging the event, if you want details, but here's the gist of the new announcements.

iTunes 8 Adds HD TV Shows, NBC, and New Genius Feature: The latest upgrade to iTunes brings back NBC shows to iPod owners who were missing the ability to watch 'Battlestar Galactica' and 'The Office' on their portable devices. Also added, HD versions of said TV shows, a welcome addition to the existing HD movie lineup on iTunes. Meanwhile, Genius is a LastFM/Pandora-like song recommendation feature that will help you automatically generate playlists of your existing music based on your actual listening tastes. It'll also, of course, make intelligent suggestions based on music you're buying in the store. We have yet to try it out in person, though, so more on that later.

Slimmest iPod Nano Eve
r: Shipping in nine colors, the new Nano kind of looks like the Nano-before-last, but is apparently the slimmest ever, according to Jobs. It comes with some of the innovations found in the iPhone and iPod Touch, such as an accelerometer, so that the screen can automatically switch between portrait and landscape mode. It also has the new Apple Genius feature built in.

New 120-Gigabyte (GB) iPod Classic:
The overly thick 160GB model will be scrapped to make way for this slimmer, 30,000-song-holding model, for the nice price of $249.

32-Gigabyte (GB) iPod Touch: Now you'll have twice as much space to hold all those movies you've been wanting to watch on the Touch's stunning widescreen. It'll cost you a hefty $399, but the 8-gigabyte Touch is now only $229.

New In-Ear Headphones:
Plenty of earbud-style headphones exist, but so few that'll match your iPod so nicely. For $79, you get a pair of these dual-drive 'phones, along with a fit kit featuring three earbud sizes.

iPod Nanos Set to Double Capacity

MacRumors has some last minute leaks en-route to Tuesday's Lets Rock event. Arn's sources claim that the entire iPod lineup will be refreshed and the heavily rumored iPod nanos will make the move from 4GB/8GB capacities and 6 color choices to 8GB/16GB configurations in 9 color variations -- purple, orange, and yellow will be the new choices. Interestingly, the iPod touch will continue to be offered in 8GB/16GB/32GB choices which sets them up for the rumored price cuts we've been expecting ever since Apple kicked out the iPhone 3G for $199.

By the way, the Apple store will almost certainly be going down in the next few minutes. Consider us and yourselves, notified.

Updates to the iPod Nano and iTunes Coming Soon?

Kevin Rose (of Digg fame) claims to have the scoop on the latest iPod nano. Mind you, this is the same Kevin Rose who notoriously claimed that a generation one iPhone would launch in two versions (CDMA and GSM) with a pair of batteries and slide-out keyboard. Uh hem. This time however, he backs up his claims with this picture of a skinnier, longer, and curvier nano -- credible because it just happens to be consistent with other rumors we've seen floating around and certainly makes sense for an Apple obsessed with tapering edges and video playback.

Kev also claims that the iPod lineup will undergo "fairly large" price cuts to avoid the market cannibalization assumed by the lower $199 iPhone 3G purchase price. The iPod touch, which currently starts at $299 for 8GB, will see some slight cosmetic changes as well as a new 2.1 firmware update (which will obviously make its way to the iPhone). Tagging along with the iPod refresh is a new iTunes 8.0 which, according to Rose's sources, deserves the full point upgrade based on all the new features and functionality it brings. All this, "in the next 2-3 weeks."

He then adds that OS X 10.5.6 is rumored to include Blu-ray support which could point to future Blu-ray options in Apple's lineup of Macs -- oh, and ponies, lots of ponies. Listen to the man say it in his own words in the video after the break. [From: Kevin Rose] [Thanks, Matt and Alexis F.]

New Rainbow Schemed iPods Coming Soon?

Sure, you could dismiss this round of iPod rumors -- so carefully culled by the fine folks at 9 to 5 Mac and AppleInsider -- as baseless speculation, but we'll have none of your dowdy skepticism. We're talking about rainbows here, people. AppleInsider claims that retailers are seeing current iPod models being switched to "discontinued" in inventory systems, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says to expect iPod refreshes across the board, including a slightly redesigned $200 iPod touch, and meanwhile 9 to 5 Mac has it from an unnamed source that the new iPod nanos will have enhanced features, double the storage and rainbow color schemes.

It's almost like somebody in Cupertino is reading our mind! We'll know for sure when new iPods arrive mid-September filled to the brim with "Run's House" episodes and bedecked in rainbow-hued gummy bears. It's going to rock.

[Thanks, Kiwi616]

Apple Admits to iPod Nano Problems, Will Replace Faulty Devices

It's only taken a number of years and some seriously ruined pants -- but Apple has finally come clean on the flammable nature of the first-generation iPod nano, and is now offering to replace the faulty devices. After reports today that two more of the media players had lit up without warning in Japan, the company issued a statement admitting that the nanos do -- in fact -- have battery problems which cause them to smoke or spark and generally burn the hell out of things. In the company's words:

"Apple has determined that in very rare cases batteries in first generation iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 can overheat causing failure and deformation of the iPod nano. Apple has received very few reports of such incidents (less than 0.001 percent of first generation iPod nano units), which have been traced back to a single battery supplier. There have been no reports of serious injuries or property damage, and no reports of incidents for any other iPod nano model.

Any first generation iPod nano customers who have experienced their battery overheating should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Any other customers who have concerns about their first generation iPod nano battery should also contact AppleCare."

Well, thanks guys... at least we didn't die. [From: CNET]

Japan Investigates Exploding iPod Nanos, Again

Look, it's pretty clear that the lithium-ion battery in the first generation iPod nano has the potential to burst into flames. Seriously, how many more cases do we have to see? Even after giving Apple a stern talking-to and ferocious wag of the finger back in March, Japan's government is once again investigating possible battery defects that caused a pair of Tokyo nanos to burn: nano model MA099 recently singed a piece of nearby paper while a model MA005 nano burned a traditional tatami mat in January (no injuries were reported).

Presumably Apple is calculating the Tyler Durden cost-of-recall at this very moment. In other words, take the number of 1st gen nanos in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, they don't do one.

Update: Japan has issued a warning to iPod nano users saying, "Users need to be careful about overheating of the machines," particularly when charging the players. Japan's government has reported a total of 14 similar incidents to Apple related to models MA004J/A, MA005J/A, MA099J/A and MA107J/A all sold between September '05 and September '06 -- two of which resulted in minor burns. NHK claims that Apple does not plan a recall but is ready to exchange defective parts.
