Lamborghini to Go Green With Hybrids by 2015

Responding to the decidedly 21st-century dilemma of "greening" the king of supercars, car manufacturer Lamborghini believes it has come up with an answer. Its newest vehicle will use a small electric motor when moving at slow speeds, but will allow the full power of its gas-guzzling engine to take hold on the open road.

The move towards hybrid technology comes shortly after Lamborghini's recent announcement of its Estoque family sedan. The company plans to start actually building these hybrid freaks of vehicular nature by 2015.

So, when you're driving your $500,000 sports car around town in your $25,000 suit after your $400 dinner hoping to pick up on members of the fairer sex, you can now save a few bucks on gas while doing so. [From: D-vice]

Federal Bill Says Silent Cars a Threat to Pedestrians

Hybrid cars may be designed to save the atmosphere, but there is growing concern that they may actually pose a health risk to a large number of people, most notably the blind.

With the potential hazards of silent vehicles firmly in mind, the senatorial odd couple of John Kerry and Arlen Specter has introduced the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, according to AutoBlogGreen. The bill, intended to protect pedestrians of all kinds, acknowledges that "New Vehicles that employ hybrid or electric engine technology can be silent, rendering them extremely dangerous in situations where vehicles and pedestrians come into proximity with each other."

Updated Look at Prius-Killing 2009 Honda Insight

With hybrid cars being all the rage, Autoblog has an updated look at the 2009 Honda Insight, a month before it debuts at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The official photo shows a car that looks pretty similar to the concept shown at the Paris Motor Show and Los Angeles Auto Show -- and, it should be noted, very, very similar to Toyota's Prius.

Honda expects to sell about 100,000 Insights in North America once it goes on sale in the spring, and here's the real kicker: word on the street is that its base price will come in below $20,000. American auto companies are sooooo getting Darwinized. [From: Autoblog]

Whoa! Hybrid Horse Vehicles are Here

Poor horses. We humans have been exploiting them since we first figured out that we could. Yeah, there are laws against it and stuff, but, you know...

Now a new form of horsesploitation has been devised by Rousch Technologies for the Turkish company Kurt Systems. KS' invention is a new and more sinister-looking twist on the horse drawn carriages of yore used to spirit Ugly Betty and Japanese tourists around Central Park.

The scary-looking contraption is not just for fun and TV. It is, in fact, a 4-ton piece of state-of-the-art racehorse training equipment, and comes outfitted with a Volvo diesel engine, silicone simulation saddle, and computerized monitors which track the horse's every move.

The craft has an open space in front where the horse runs and a cabin in the back (Greyhound bus meets funeral hearse) where the vet, trainer, and driver sit, and can monitor horses running up to 38 mph. It even has electronic reins, though we're still not sure how that works.

These creepy horsecrafts could be the future of racing. A Kurt Systems spokesman explains that the trainer will be serially produced, and is expected to become a racing industry must-have. "We believe that our approach to controlled environment training will become established practice with many studs and stables at this level." But how does Big Brown feel about all this? Honda to Sell New Gas-Electric Hybrid Next Year

In what feels like loooooong overdue news, Honda has announced that it will sell "a new, improved and affordable gas-electric hybrid in the USA, Japan and Europe" starting in early 2009, as outlined by President Takeo Fukui at the company's Tokyo headquarters Tuesday. The design of the new vehicle will be inspired by the FCX Clarity (pictured above); it will be a five-door sedan that seats five passengers, and will feature new technology to reduce the size and weight of the hybrid system and increase fuel efficiency.

In addition to the new hybrid, Honda will introduce several other hybrids: a Civic, a sportier model (based on the CR-Z concept car), and a Fit subcompact, according to Fukui.

No prices were discussed and no photos were shown of the new model. However, Fukui said the difference between hybrids and their comparable standard models should be kept within 200,000 yen ($1,900), compared to current gaps, which now reach as much as 500,000 yen ($4,800).

Honda has been trailing rival Toyota in the hybrid market. Honda said Wednesday that it plans to sell 500,000 hybrids a year sometime after 2010 -- still half the number that Toyota has already announced it seeks to sell a year by the same time period.

Our favorite line of the press conference? Speaking about the need to start production at home before outsourcing it to other countries, Fukui said, "the power of Japan is needed."

Yes, 100 MPG Cars Are Coming -- Sometime (Video)

Move over, Prius. Next-generation lithium-ion-based plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars promise three-figure fuel economy and the comforts of a full-sized car... if they can get off the drawing board. We got a closer look at the current crop while walking the floors of this week's New York Auto Show. Take a look!

Honda's New Steam-Powered Hybrid Engine

Honda's New Steam Powered Hybrid Engine

Honda has just unveiled a concept car using a so-called Rankine cycle co-generation unit to power a hybrid engine. The engine recycles wasted heat from the exhaust to generate steam that turns a turbine-generating electricity, which charges the batteries. The concept has proven more efficient than the regenerative breaking system employed by most current hybrid cars, including the Prius, especially when cruising at highway speeds.

The concept is not entirely new, and Honda claims that at 62 miles-per-hour the new engine is 3.8 percent more efficient than past versions. Apparently, the engine is currently not efficient enough (not to mention too expensive) to merit being installed in a production vehicle, but Honda has said that this may change if it can can make the engine even more efficient.

It's a CD! It's a Record! It's a CD/Vinyl Hybrid!

Vinyl/CD Hybrid
There's a small group of us who, in this digital world, has developed a fetish for all things analog. This obsession is particularly strong among musicians and music lovers. Vacuum tube amps, vintage synthesizers, and, of course vinyl records.

Optimal Media Productions is appealing to this fascination with good ol' records by adding a little value and novelty to your average CD. The comapny's new combo vinyl CD is a standard CD on one side and three-and-a-half minutes of pure vinyl goodness on the other.

The combination of the convenience of a CD and the coolness of vinyl isn't quite perfect, since there is only enough room for one song on the vinyl side. Even so, that little vinyl strip could provide the perfect place to add a bonus track.
