Student Arrested for Modding Game Consoles for Profit

Student Arrested For Modding Game Consoles For Profit
Some folks online are up in arms over the arrest of geek-supreme Matthew Crippen, a student at California State University at Fullerton. According to the charges, Crippen was illegally modding gaming consoles to play pirated games, and doing so for financial gain.

Modding game consoles is, in fact, a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Note: Don't post pirated products, unless you want to garner the attention of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office (ICE) and the Entertainment Software Association (as Crippen did).

Federal prosecutor Mark Krause told KPCC that Crippen had advertised his consoles online. When ICE agents raided Crippen's home in May, they recovered over a dozen modded Xboxes, PlayStations, and Wiis. Robert Schoch, ICE special agent in Los Angeles told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth, "Playing with games in this way is not a game -- it is criminal." Crippen was released on $5,000 bail and faces a maximum of ten years in jail.

After the raid, Crippen was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of violating the DMCA, each of which carries a maximum of five years imprisonment. Harsh, but perhaps not the "ridiculous" affront the online community is sobbing about. [From: NBC Dallas-Fort Worth and KPCC]

DIY Trash Can Understands Your Voice Commands

Have you ever stared at a garbage can and wished you could command it to come towards you? No? Then you may still be interested in this new speech-controlled trash can built by DIY-er Amnon, which will respond to your beck and call, yet never stray beyond the safe confines of your carefully laid out tape route (sure to compliment any room).

Unfortunately, there isn't a step-by-step guide for building a little trash buddy of your own, but Amnon has provided a shot of the all-important underside (linked below), and a complete parts list, so it shouldn't be too hard for experienced folks to follow along. Head on past the break for the video.

Man Creates Huge, Foot-Activated DIY Remote Control

Crazy us, we thought that a remote control was meant to keep you on the couch -- it does seem rather counter-intuitive to build one that makes you leave your seat and jump around within arm's reach of the TV set. But when this guy saw an over-sized novelty remote at Brookstone, he knew that he had to have it. Not only that, but he had to best it -- by fashioning a controller for Windows Media Center so large that one would need an entire appendage to get any use out of the thing. Our intrepid modder achieved his goal by stitching together two PS2 Dance Dance Revolution mats, a PS2-to-PC controller converter box, and some homebrew source code. What can we say about this one? Well, it certainly does seem to work... but we'll be sticking to the tried and true, thank you very much. Video after the break. [Via Hacked Gadgets]

Romantic Geek Proposes Via Homebrew DS Game

Geek Proposes Via Homebrew DS Game
We have a new winner for geekiest marriage proposal ever. Proposing in 'Second Life' and 'World of Warcraft' is so 2007. Now you uber dorks will have to top Bernie, a Xanga user who wrote a version of 'Bejeweled' from scratch for his girlfriend's Nintendo DS.

When his girlfriend, Tammy, reached a certain score, the screen cleared and ring made out of the game's namesake jewels lowered on to the screen. Of course, waiting near by with a ring, was Bernie.

Congratulations to you both on the engagement! And Bernie, you're an unbelievable dork. And we love you for that.
