Gift Guide: McIntosh MXA60 Audio System

McIntosh MXA60 60th Anniversary Integrated Audio System
(Media Hound, Cost No Object)

If you must have top-shelf, top-notch, wallet-draining audio -- which is the only reason you'd be perusing a McIntosh music system in the first place -- then at least do Santa (and the mailman) a favor and lug home the MXA60 yourself: even though it's a bookshelf system, it weighs a husky 64 pounds. From the company synonymous with picky sonic perfection, and vacuum-tube preamps, the MXA60 is an integrated mini-stereo par excellence: 75-watt-per-channel audiophile-quality vacuum-tube amp, CD/SACD/MP3 player, radio tuner and a pair of beefy loudspeakers that'll rock your socks off (as well as line level outs and ins). Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't say it also looks pretty freakin' cool, but then for $7500 it better.

Gift Guide: Grado iGi Earphones

Grado iGi Earphones (Media Hound, Under $100)

To the audio obsessives who consider the quality of their sound gear a way of life, the mere mention of the name Grado elicits the kind of response usually reserved for Santa or, well, Steve Jobs . Since most Grado headphones are priced in the relative stratosphere, its new iGi model ($89) is a welcome entry-level sampler for the iPod generation. As with all in-ear models, they offer the side benefit of blocking out virtually all outside noise mostly because they're inserted deep into your ear canal -- like you-better-pay-for-dinner-and-a-movie-first type of intimacy. The iGi's don't compare with some of Grado's more legendary over-the-ear models, but you'd be hard-pressed to find better quality sound from such a reliable brand at anywhere near the cost.

Gift Guide: Joby Gorillamobile for iPhone

Joby Gorillamobile for iPhone (Media Hound, Under $50)
Joby first earned fans several years ago when it essentially invented its own market: low-cost, flexible but durable mini tripods for cameras. And Joby's done it again by extending into the iPhone accessory market with the $40 Gorillamobile. Put any iPhone 3G or 3GS (sorry first genners) into the included soft case and then snap it into the tripod and you're good to go -- use it to keep your iPhone within easy viewing when you're on a bike, or while you're driving (for hands-free calling and GPS functions only!), or on a plane (to watch movies), or in the kitchen, or wherever else you are that requires you to go handsfree. Nicely, it also comes with a standard 1/4-inch adapter for attaching a camera as well. Oh, and just to be clear, no gorillas were harmed in the manufacture of this product.

Gift Guide: HP Beats Laptop

HP Beats Laptop
(Media Hound, Under $2,500)

It's rare that a PC laptop makes even Mac owners look twice, but look twice at the above photo. See? The 15-inch black-and-red stunna -- essentially an HP Envy with a Beats by Dr. Dre veneer -- has a lot in common with the MacBook Pro, actually: the chiclet keyboard, the buttonless, multitouch trackpad, the slim, bezel-etched design, even the $2,299 (and up) price tag. But it's the 1.6GHz Intel Core i7-720QM processor, ATI Mobility Radeon graphics card, networking-optimized Windows 7, and great screen that make this a multimedia powerhouse ideal for playing music, movies, and pictures while on the go or at home. Yes, the 'Beats' brand may be mostly a marketing gimmick, but it does mean that the system also comes with a pair of Beats Solo by Dr. Dre headphones ($199 on their own), an audio interface with two stereo outputs and ultra-loud output level, which makes it good for producing or performing music live. For those who produce their own music -- or trendsetters who want a distinctive-looking PC -- the $2,229 Beats Laptop is tough to beat.

Gift Guide: Seagate FreeAgent Theater+

Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ (Media Hound, under $250)

You've got a hard drive full of movies and television, but playing these digital files where they're meant to be played -- on your living room TV/receiver setup, rather than your computer -- can be tricky business. Though its interface is light years behind that of Apple TV, the FreeAgent Theater+ ($150) excels in flexibility: The device can play nearly any file you throw at it (WMV, AVI, MP4, MKV, and VOB, to name just a few). Also, 720p and 1080p files play back without a hitch, and the device even makes sense of complicated folder hierarchies and file names. Media hounds will be best served by putting all of their content on an accompanying Seagate FreeAgent hard drive (which plugs into the device), but for overall bang for the buck (especially for folks with loads of downloaded movies and TV), it's still a great value.

Gift Guide: Wadia i70i High-End iPod Dock

"High-end" and "iPod dock" are seldom combined, but Wadia Digital has made it so with its 170iTransport, a squat little component that can turn Apple's portable audio and video capabilities into a stellar home media server. The first product to offer iPod's native digital audio output--over SP/DIF coaxial cable, included--the 170i enables your compressed music collection sound purer than it ever has, enjoyed over a home stereo/home theater rig. Boasting component video, the i170 delivers your movie files to the TV or HDTV with exceptional clarity, too. In black or silver, with remote control and assorted docking inserts.

5 Holiday-Themed Blu-ray Discs

christmas story

So you're either giving, or you're about to receive, an HDTV and want something to keep the whole family busy this holiday? Well, you're in luck (sort of), since HD versions of some holiday classics have started to make their way onto Blu-ray discs. Surprisingly, there isn't much in the way of TV classics like 'Rudolf, the Red Nose Reindeer' or 'A Charlie Brown Christmas,' but here are five solid holiday movies that will feel brand new in stunning 1080p high-definition.

'A Christmas Story'
Sure, this classic about the cute, bespectacled kid who wants a rifle from Santa is played over and over on TV every Christmas, but not in full, 1080p HD, which is why you'd want to invest in the Blu-ray disc. The release also includes commentary by director Bob Clark and Peter Billingsley (who played 'Ralphie'), a documentary on the 20th anniversary of the film, script pages, and, of course, the de rigueur trailer. A limited edition version comes in a retro cookie box and is big enough to wrap, making it a decent last-minute gift.

'Home Alone'
Finally on Blu-ray, this 1990 John Hughes classic starring Macaulay Culkin as the kid that gets left behind by his parents on their way to a Christmas vacation includes a load of (unfortunately SD) extras, including deleted scenes, bloopers, where the stars of the movie are now clips, and a brand-spanking new 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio soundtrack.

'The Nightmare Before Christmas'
Tim Burton's creepy Christmas tale – an Dia-de-los-Muertos-esque musical featuring sons by Danny Elfman – came out on Blu-ray earlier this year and looks stunning in HD. The remastered 7.1 soundtrack also breathes new life into the movie. Extras galore include everything from the previous DVD releases of the movie, as well as new content such as re-edited and new commentary by Burton, the original poem that inspired the movie, and D-Box code, which works with D-Box motion simulators that you can attach to your chair or couch (and annoy neighbors).

'Fred Claus'
The 'Wedding Crashers' director David Dobkin's humorous tale of Santa Claus's less accomplished brother (played by Vince Vaughan). While it's not quite a classic, it is funny. The Blu-ray release includes the usual extras such as director commentary, interviews with cast members, and a nice looking HD picture and 5.1 surround soundtrack.

'Elf'
Will Ferrell plays an oversized human adopted by Santa's elves who figures out he's not like the rest of them and heads down to New York. Bob Newhart is deadpan funny as Ferrell's elf Dad. The Blu-ray release includes directory commentary, a funny making of featurette with Will Ferrell, and generous deleted scenes and bloopers.

Hands-On Review: i2i Stream Wireless Music

Ever wish you could make any audio setup wireless? We checked out the i2i Stream wireless audio system that essentially takes the place of a cord and allows you to stream audio from nearly any source. The kit comes with two combination transmitter/receiver devices and when you want to make a music source wireless, you simply connect the output to one of these small devices using the included 1/8-inchcable, turn the unit on, and press the "send" button. Then you can connect the other device to headphones or speakers, press the "receive" button and you're free to roam around your house with your iPod pumping tunes from your pocket to your living room stereo.

Since you have to charge each battery powered unit by USB, the i2i Stream doesn't seem to be a permanent solution for wireless audio, but the convenient size of the devices make it perfect for quick plug and play. We found ourselves streaming songs from our computer to show our friends in the living room, then using it with an iPod in the kitchen as a sort of music remote, and finally to play some late night 'Rock Band 2' with headphones (with the help of a simple RCA to 1/8" adapter from Radio Shack).

Once you get the units linked, you'll find that they work really well, but we had some occasional problems getting them to find each other when syncing for the first time. One of the units mysteriously turned off one time, and for $119 MSRP, we would like to see much more sturdy construction: The i2i Stream devices are plastic and feel cheap. Still, the system delivers what it promises, and the simple input/output design gives you an incredible number of options for linking your audio devices through the ether.

Best HDTVs Under $1000

We hate to say it, particularly since you're probably trying to save money, but now is a pretty good time to buy an HDTV. Prices have never been lower for televisions of every shape, size, and technology. In fact, you can get an HDTV for less than $300, which is finally getting close to what a TV should cost. That said, if you're a movie watcher and have a big enough room, then we'd recommend spending a bit more for something in the 42-to-50-inch range. Guess what? You can still find some great TVs in that size for less than $1,000. So, in order of ascending price, take a look at our picks for best TVs under $1,000. [If you're looking for an explanation of all those TV and tech terms, make sure to take a look at 5 Things to Consider Before Buying an HDTV]. Best HDTVs Under $1000 2

Sylvania LC195SL9
19-inch LCD TV 720p
$299.99 at Best Buy

WHAT'S A DEAL: This one has a built-in DTV antenna, which means you don't even need a cable or satellite box to get HDTV, as it'll pick up free over-the-air HD broadcasts. Since it's so small, even standard definition TV looks good on this small baby. Also, it works as a PC monitor, thanks to a PC input.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: At 19-inches, you won't really notice any of the benefits of HDTV, which probably won't matter that much anyway since it only has two high-def ready HDMI inputs.

BOTTOM LINE: This is our 19-inch budget TV of choice – perfect for the kitchen, the bedroom, small apartments, and the study (as a dual-purpose computer monitor and television).

Best HDTVs Under $1000 3

Dynex DX-LCD32-09
32-inch LCD 720p
$429.99 from Best Buy

WHAT'S A DEAL: This 32-incher from Best Buy's other house brand has some basic good features like volume leveling (so you're not hit with loud fluctuations while watching a show) and a PC input so you can use it as a computer screen.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: It's only 720p resolution and only has two HDMI inputs.

BOTTOM LINE: Dynex is Best Buy's house brand, so getting this TV is a bit like buying America's Choice brand at the supermarket. Are you into that or not? We say it's worth a shot, especially since you're getting something big enough for a rec-room or medium-sized living room for around $400.

Best HDTVs Under $1000 5

Westinghouse W2613
26-inch LCD 720p
$449.99 from Best Buy

WHAT'S A DEAL: Sexy styling, day and night settings depending on room light, energy efficient. Can be used as a computer monitor.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: Only one HDMI input; only 720p resolution; regular TV only looks so-so.

BOTTOM LINE: This 26-incher does just enough that's right to make it a decent buy for $449. It's ideal as a multi-purpose computer monitor for the study, or an extra TV in the kitchen or bedroom.

Best HDTVs Under $1000 6

Philips 42PFL3603D
42-inch LCD 1080p
$748 at Target

WHAT'S A DEAL: Top-of-the-line 1080p resolution; sexy modern design with rounded edges; accurate color.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: The sound is lackluster, but our main beef is that all of the inputs are on the back of the unit, which means it'll be tough to hang this unit on the wall unless you feel comfortable taking it down every time you want to adjust your component configuration.

BOTTOM LINE: This TV has topnotch visuals for less than $800 and will appeal to anyone who is concerned with home aesthetics. Also, we'd only recommend it to folks with decent home theater systems, since the speakers are crap.

Holiday Gift Guide 2008

Best HDTVs Under $1000 7

LG 42LG30
42-inch LCD 720p
$799.99 at BestBuy

WHAT'S A DEAL: The sound is probably the best we've heard on all the sub-$1,000 TVs we considered. LG has done a nice job of building speakers into this thing, and it has developed something called Clear Voice, which makes it a lot easier to hear dialogue, even with lots of background noise or music in the movie you're watching.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: It's only 720p resolution – good enough for broadcast HDTV, but not quite Blu-ray resolution.

BOTTOM LINE: Perfect for anyone who doesn't have (and doesn't want) a home theater system, since the speakers are better than those on most TVs we've tried. This is the kind of TV that would work nicely in, say, the bedroom, where most folks don't have elaborate surround sound systems (at least not yet).

Best HDTVs Under $1000 8

Panasonic THC50HD18
50-inch plasma 720p
$899.99 at Costco

WHAT'S A DEAL: A whopping 50-inch flat-panel from plasma pro Panasonic for less than $1,000, generous 3 HDMI inputs, realistic color and black levels. Great for sports, since plasmas handle action scenes better than LCDs. Optimized to work easily with other Panasonic components (DVD players, Blu-ray players, A/V receivers, etc) through VIERALink.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: It's only 720p resolution, which is fine for all broadcast TV signals and most downloadable HD content (from iTunes, Xbox 360 or Vudu), but won't give you the ultimate HD quality for 1080p content such as Blu-ray discs.

BOTTOM LINE: If screen size, reliability, and accurate color and contrast is a high priority to you, you'll be plenty satisfied with this 50-inch plasma.
