Gift Guide: The Vision One Computer Workstation

The Vision One Computer Workstation (Gamer, Under $2,500)

There are desks, and then there's the V1 ($1,700 starting price), an uncompromising workstation aimed squarely at appeasing the ergonomic needs of the seasoned PC gamer. The standard and corner-room configurations come in 35 colors like solid blue, metallic silver, and "rainbo" -- yep, you read right -- with finishes that include racing stripes and even flames. An adjustable-height monitor stand holds up to three displays while padded elbow rests support your arms; four speaker uprights surround the user so that you're always in the sweet spot. Colors aside, the V1 customization options are plentiful, from the table tops down to chair. If you've got the extra cash, spring for the cushy leather Porsche seat. Why? Because you (and your back) deserve it.

Gift Guide: 'Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition'

'Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition'
(Gamer, Under $100)

When we say 'Batman: Arkham Asylum' ($89.99 for Collector's Edition, $49 standard edition, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC) is the best superhero game of all time, we mean it. Because that's what Rocksteady Studios has achieved -- a gorgeous, adult action adventure that does the Dark Knight justice. Taking place over one evening, Batman must tackle the Joker and his goons and break out of Gotham's nuthouse. Luckily for players, the journey is extremely interactive–using one's surroundings to fight is not only encouraged, it's obligatory. Drop down onto enemies from above, rig explosives to bring walls down, and crash through windows and ceilings. The cast of 'Batman: The Animated Series' provides the voice acting, with Mark Hamill memorably reprising the Joker. The Collector's Edition includes a 14-inch "Batarang," behind-the-scenes DVD, and 48-page book with notes on Arkham Asylum's inmates.

Gift Guide: Alienware Area 51 ALX Gaming PC

Alienware Area 51 ALX Gaming PC
(Gamer, Cost No Object)

If you're trying to keep up with the Joneses in PC gaming, Alienware's Area 51 Gaming PC ($3,999 and up) is tough to beat. Housed inside one of the company's trademark love-'em-or-hate-'em "futuristic" cases, this rig is decked out with some of the best components money can buy: Intel Core i7 975 Extreme processors, your choice of ATI CrossFireX or NVidia SLI graphics graphics cards (making it great for the 3-D gaming with Nvidia's 3-D Vision Kit), and plenty of memory to keep things running smoothly). Oh, and it uses a fancy liquid cooling system to keep all this stuff from melting down inside. it's a hefty price to pay, certainly -- fully tricked out, this thing will set you back nearly as much as a small car, but the benchmarks are right up there near the head of the pack. And hey, you can't shoot nasty, earth-hating aliens with a Hyundai Accent, can you?

Gift Guide: NVidia 3D Vision Kit

NVidia 3-D Vision Kit
(Gamer, Under $250)

"3-D gaming" is one of those terms that gets bandied about quite a bit these days. And while the experience is best experienced in movie theaters, the home alternatives are finally starting to proliferate. Arguably the best option out there is NVidia's 3-D Vision Kit ($199), which connects to your PC, and displays your compatible games in three glorious dimensions (the list includes such award winners as 'Resident Evil 5,' 'Left 4 Dead,' and 'Batman: Arkham Asylum'). You'll need a high-speed 120 Hz-monitor, HDTV or projector to properly view the games, and an 8800 GT graphics card or better. While the stereoscopic goggles are a bit goofy, the gaming experience provided is quite unlike any you've ever experienced: You'll literally try to reach out and touch the graphics.

Gift Guide: Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts
(Gamer, Under $50)

Scribblenauts ($29.99) is one of those games that gets people talking. Essentially a puzzle game at its core, the experience involves inputting words (via either handwriting recognition or an onscreen keyboard) to outfit your character with different objects to solve the problem at hand. A flamethrower may be the easiest way to burn through some impassably thick brush, while a net may let you catch an intimidating shark. The game's vocabulary is rather staggering; input nearly anything you can think of and watch it manifest before you in two-dimensional glory. When your friend starts complaining about the lack of innovation in video games, hand them your copy of Scribblenauts and say, "Play this."

Gift Guide: PlayStation 3 Slim

PlayStation 3 Slim
(Gamer, Under $500)

If you've been holding off on buying a PlayStation 3 (PS3) for one of many reasons -- it's too expensive, it's too big, it looks too much like a George Foreman Grill -- then you may have run out of excuses with the PS3 Slim. This smaller, lighter, quieter, and more energy-efficient hardware comes in at a perfectly manageable $300, and the beautiful matte design won't bother than non-gaming aesthetes in your house (nor will the Blu-ray functionality, of course). Like more recent iterations of the PS3, it won't play your PlayStation 2 (PS2) games, but that's a small price to pay; it comes with a 120-gigabyte (GB) hard drive and a Wireless DualShock 3 controller, which means you'll be gaming right out of the box. (As long as you buy a game with it, that is.)

New Bags for Getting Around With Your Gaming Setup

If you've ever tried to lug your gaming setup with you on vacation, you know what a pain it is; finding compartments for all of the associated wires, power adapters, and controllers is an exercise in futility.

Now a company called ASTRO Gaming believes it has the answer. Its new Transport Series of gaming bags is meant for the road-hardened gamer. For a hundred bucks, the Roadie dual guitar controller case holds two Guitar Hero or Rock Band guitars, along with a PlayStation 2 Slim. Perhaps more practical is the Mission complete system gear bag, which fits moves an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo Wii, along with power supply, controllers, and games.

Both bags will be available for purchase on December 15, just in give yourself a way to bring your gaming setup to the in-laws for the holidays. [From: AstroGaming]

Commodore Unveils MLB-Themed Gaming PCs

Hard to say if these MLB-themed gaming PCs will be "a line drive to right" with gamers out there, but Commodore has certainly "rounded the bases" in order to deliver some pretty fanciful machines. The officially licensed desktops boast an exclusive C-kin paint job only possessed by the "true five-tool" PC manufacturing companies, though we have heard that the Core i7 within was "indirectly linked to HGH." At any rate, clean-up hitters can "round third and head for home" (or the order page, as it were) right now, but don't expect to underpay one of these "all-stars" and get away with it. Full release is just past the break, and we don't want to see any lollygagging on your way down.

Gift Guide: Sumo Omni

Two Sumo Omni Bean Bags
(Gamer, Under $500)

There's just something about playing games right in front of the TV. Games are meant to be immersive, and being up in the grill of your 50-inch widescreen display certainly helps matters, but you need something to keep you there in comfort. Enter the glorious beanbag: Sumo makes the best we've found, available in an array of different sizes and colors, and more importantly made of comfortable, extremely durable nylon and Sumo beads. They can be shaped to fit any variety of slouch, and are impressively child-resistant. Give one of these chairs, and your gamer will be ready to go, but a gift of two of these babies ($179 each) completes the ultimate gaming setup.

Gift Guide: Coin-Op Arcade Games

Coin-op Arcade games (Gamer, Under $5000)

What's the only video game hardware that would make a better gift than a PlayStation 3 this Christmas? An upright arcade machine, of course. The Pinball Company sells such classics as 'Alpine Racer' (for skiing enthusiasts), 'Daytona USA' (for racing enthusiasts), and 'Burgertime' (for grilled beef patty enthusiasts), for prices ranging from $1500 to $5000. If they've got the space and you've got the cash, there are few better ways to say "I love you" (enough to put up with your manbaby obsessions).

Gift Guide: Velocity Raptor and Edge Gaming PCs

Velocity Raptor and Edge Gaming PCs
(Gamer, Under $5000)

The baddest gaming PC around is Velocity's Raptor: it comes in several flavors, from the "bang for the buck" Z5 to the "bucks are not an issue" high-end systems. The Raptor Z90 comes tricked out with everything your beloved gamer will need, and you can of course customize it to their liking (we might suggest upgrading the graphics card to the dual Raedon HD option). These things are incredibly well-made, and the superb customer support (as well as the free shipping) help seal the deal.

Gift Guide: Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP)

Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP)
(Gamer, Under $250)

Whether your gaming sympathies lie with the XBox, Wii, DS or PlayStation 3, we can all agree on one thing: the PSP is a pretty awesome piece of multimedia machinery, despite not being the end-all be-all everyone demands of it. The newest update, the so-called PSP 3000, brings a welcome power boost under the hood, a longer 6-hour battery life, and a thinner, smaller, lighter body. At less than two bills, no other portable gaming system?or portable media player for that matter?comes close.

Gift Guide: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
(Gamer, Under $50)

With the long-awaited Street Fighter 4 right around the corner (well, early next year), SF mania has hit full steam. And for those who want their fix now, don't hesitate: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, aside from having the longest title in the series, is a visual punch to the face. Each and every character has been recreated with new graphics and animations, and the results are stunningly crisp (particularly in 1080p). At less than $20 on either Xbox Live Arcade or the PlayStation Store, it's arguably the most bang for the buck in all of video games.

Gift Guide: Fallout 3 Collector's Edition

Fallout 3 Collector's Edition
(Gamer, Under $100)

Nothing says "I love you" like the gift of post-apoctalyptic adventure. Available for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, 'Fallout 3' takes the open-world exploration of Bethesda's last award-winning title ('The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion'), and brings it into an expansive, creepy future chock full of frighteningly realistic AI and equally impressive HD graphics. The collector's edition includes a hardcover art book, a making-of DVD, and more. For those with slightly lighter tastes, 'Fable 2' makes a great alternative (assuming the giftee owns an Xbox 360).

Gift Guide: Cerwin-Vega CVHD 5.1

Cerwin-Vega CVHD 5.1
(Gamer, Under $1000)

Now that gaming visuals are in blistering HD, we should all be lucky enough to have the audio to match. The CVHD is a beast of a surround sound system: five speakers (each with six woofers and one tweeter) are complimented by a 12-inch, 250-watt powered subwoofer -- and the result is very precise, very LOUD surround sound. Worried that the gift will end your marriage? Take note: music and movies sound equally amazing, so just wield the remote with gusto. Plus it looks good either mounted on the wall or on speaker stands.
