Gift Guide: HYmini Solar-Powered Charger

HYmini Green Charger (Earth Lover, Under $100)

Eco-conscious people, however dedicated to their ideals, enjoy the same fruits of modern technology -- smartphones, MP3 players, and digital cameras -- as the rest of us. One company has created a sustainable way to charge those gadgets using multiple renewable energy sources including wind, the sun, and even a handcrank. The HYMini Green Charger's internal 1200 mAh lithium ion battery can also be charged via wall outlet by connecting it via USB to a computer -- two not-so-green, yet effective, alternatives. It takes four hours in a wall to fully charge, but just 20 minutes in a 9mph wind is enough to take 20 digital pictures or power your iPhone for half an hour. Up to four mini solar panels can be added to catch the sun, and the pocket-sized turbine can be attached to a bicycle (or skateboard, car, etc.) to collect additional wind upwards of 40 mph. With HYmini, increased velocity equals increased power, allowing users to get outdoors and "recharge their batteries" in more ways than one.

Gift Guide: Freehands Texting Gloves

Freehands Texting Gloves (Earth Lover, Under $50)

Smoking gloves are so passé, not to mention, environmentally-unfriendly. Texting gloves, on the other hand (pun intended), are like the 2009 version of the foldback-mittens (the simple, removable finger piece, above, means you can keep on texting regardless of the weather). Keeping digits toasty while shooting off a text is actually pretty crucial, especially when hiking, cross-country skiing, or just driving in an unheated (presumably hybrid) car. Available in fleece, tech liner and real leather (for both men and women), Freehands gloves ($18-$24) keep outdoorsy texting addicts flexible and warm all winter long. That is, as long as their (presumably eco-friendly) cells gets reception on Mount Anywhere....

Gift Guide: MSR Reactor Outdoor Stove

MSR Reactor Outdoor Stove (Earth Lover, Under $250)

Cooking outside can be challenging, no matter how seasoned the outdoorsman. The MSR Reactor stove will get it done, and will do it quickly. Burning a mixture of isobutane and propane, the windproof, hyper-efficient Reactor uses less than half the fuel of an average gas stove. The 1.7 liter pot is spacious enough to prepare high tea for three. Even with all tha troom, the unit weighs less than 19-ounces, making it much lighter than firewood. Most impressive, though, is the speed: a liter of water boils in just three minutes -- that's faster than fire, even, and less likely to conk out when it's cold, windy and wet.

D+caf Caffeine Test Strips Makes Sure Your Decaf is Decaf

Ever wondered if that 93 octane you're paying two arms and a leg for is really 93 octane? Pondered the legitimacy of that "homogenized and pasteurized" claim on your most recent milk purchase? If so, congratulations. You're the target market for the D+caf caffeine test strip. Reportedly, these strips keep the paranoid abreast of the truth whenever they venture out for a decaf drink; java sippers simply insert a tester into their beverage, wait for it to grow intolerably cold (or 30 seconds, whichever comes first) and then view the findings. The creator proclaims that they're 98-percent accurate for detecting greater than 20-milligrams of caffeine per 6-ounce serving, but we're not willing to pay $9.95 for a 20-pack in order to find out. (Kids, Under $500)

The OLPC foundation?short for One Laptop Per Child?was founded with the goal of developing and then sending out a low-power, low-cost but fully functional computer to as many kids in developing countries as possible. To help the movement, OLPC partnered with Amazon to offer the XO-1 for $399, with a second laptop being sent free through the organization to a needy kid. Let's just hope all those newly networked kids out there don't find out about 'WoW' or our clan is gonna get whupped.

Gift Guide: Plant Sense EasyBloom

Plant Sense EasyBloom
(Domestic God/Goddess, under $100)

Bringing green thumbs into the digital age, the EasyBloom is a nifty device that tells users both what may be ailing with their plants, and what other vegetation they should consider. To diagnose underperforming greenery, put the EasyBloom in Monitor mode, stab it into the ground nearby and leave it there for 24 hours. Then plug it into the USB port of your PC and it'll check with home base and offer a diagnosis. When planning a new garden, repeat the same procedure in Recommend mode and it'll suggest plants that should thrive in your particular soil. Short of highering a private groundskeeper, gardening has never been easier.
