Gift Guide: G-Robots G-Dog

G-Robots G-Dog (Gadget Head, Under $1,000)

For the robot enthusiast, the nonpareil G-Dog by G-Robots ($949.99) satisfies both the creative brain (you have to build it from the included parts) and gadget obsession. The fully-functional robot comes programmed with 17 actions -- like walk, kick, hand stand, and even "go potty" -- but the user can play with the G-Dog motion editor software to fine-tune those movements. A wireless remote controller, looking much like a PlayStation 3 controller, tops off the hardware. All in all, with an average two-hour build time, the G-Dog is easy to assemble and endless fun to use. And since G-Dog lacks the creepy verisimilitude of Ropid and other recent humanoid droids, it doesn't cause us any concern that it'll kill your loved ones in their sleep.

Gift Guide: Litl Webbook

Litl Webbook
(Novice, Under $1,000)

Think of the Litl Webbook ($699) as the anti-PC. Sure, the 1.6 GHZ Atom processor and 1-gigabyte (GB) of RAM comes standard with most netbooks, but that's where the similarities end. For starters, the user interface strips away the menus, icons and folders typically found in Windows and Mac OSX, letting you view photos, online videos and update your Facebook status directly from main screen. A flexible hinge design gives you the option of using the Litl like a standard notebook with the chiclet-style keyboard or swinging the screen over, propping it like an easel, and navigating by moving a dial on the remote, so you can focus on say, perfecting that recipe you found online instead.

Gift Guide: Sonos ZonePlayer S5

Sonos ZonePlayer S5
(Homebody; Under $1,000)

Ideal someone who wants to play their PC's music in the kitchen, living room or other room without having to configure a complicated media extender, the compact all-in-one Sonos ZonePlayer S5 ($399) is by far the most affordable wireless networkable speaker system in the company's lineup, with high-performance audio that rivals Bose's SoundDock and a user-friendly interface that makes maneuvering around music collections a cinch. There are a number of options for controlling it – a PC, Mac or a Sonos CR200 remote will do – but we recommend downloading the free Controller app onto an iPhone or iPod Touch. That way, users can access their iTunes collection or the thousands of free, searchable radio stations, all while taking calls and texts uninterrupted. Adding other ZonePlayers to the mix allows users to play different songs in other parts of the house at varying volumes, simultaneously. How's that for options?

Gift Guide: JVC HD Everio GZ-HM400 Camcorder

JVC HD Everio GZ-HM400
(Creative, Under $1,000)

If you aspire for your homemade movies to be more 'American Beauty' than America's Funniest, you'll need to forgo the raft of pocket-sized but underpowered HD camcorders and opt for a higher-end model. Which is where's JVC's newest Everio, the GZ-HM400 HD camcorder steps in. Able to record both crisp 1080 at 60fps HD video, as well 600fps slow-mo shots (you know for when your hero jumps from an exploding helicopter, or, uh, you record a friend sneezing), the HM400 has as built-in 32-gigabyte (GB) hard drive for recording up to 14 hours of AVCHD video, and nicely also an SD slot should you fill up your rig too soon. While we continue to shy away from counting on a camcorder for still shots, the HM400 does take 10 megapixel pictures, or 5.3 megapixels images in the midst of shooting video should you need the option. And taking things to a more prosumer level, an accessory shoe and audio in/out jacks allow for attaching mics and monitoring audio levels on the fly. If a budding filmmaker in your life is in the market for high-end HD, but can't afford to go pro, this camcorder will do just fine.

Gift Guide: Dyson Limited Edition DC25 Blueprint

Dyson Limited Edition DC25 Blueprint
(Homebody, Under $1000)

Vacuum cleaners are like eyeglasses and headphones -- when you buy one, it's worth paying for quality (particularly if you live with a dog and/or significant other that sheds regularly). And once you use a "serious" vacuum cleaner, it's tough to go back. Dyson's Limited Edition DC25 Blueprint ($529.99) is arguably the nicest looking Dyson yet; the combination of stormtrooper-white shiny plastic, future-industrial lines, and a purple trim is truly a sight to behold. Under the hood sits Dyson's Root Cyclone and Ball technologies, and it comes with a bonus FlatOut head, which is ideal for getting underneath low furniture and appliances. It's still expensive, but surprisingly in line with the other DC25 models. If you or someone you know is having a midlife crisis, this thing is a much better investment than a sports car.

Gift Guide: Panasonic GF1 Camera

Panasonic GF1
(Gadget Head, Under $1000)

Gadget heads, take notice: the Panasonic GF1 ($800) is a ridiculously nice camera to shoot with. Because it uses the new Micro Four Thirds standard, it essentially allows for most of the benefits of a dSLR -- interchangeable lenses, and thereby excellent image quality -- without all the bulk. The solid, sturdy metal body is definitely too big for your pocket, but it's not a pain to leave around your neck for long periods of time, either. Full, easily accessible manual control, excellent image quality (if not quite up to the standard of quality dSLR), and a superb screen make this arguably the coolest camera to own right now (excluding Leica, that is).

Best HDTVs Under $1000

We hate to say it, particularly since you're probably trying to save money, but now is a pretty good time to buy an HDTV. Prices have never been lower for televisions of every shape, size, and technology. In fact, you can get an HDTV for less than $300, which is finally getting close to what a TV should cost. That said, if you're a movie watcher and have a big enough room, then we'd recommend spending a bit more for something in the 42-to-50-inch range. Guess what? You can still find some great TVs in that size for less than $1,000. So, in order of ascending price, take a look at our picks for best TVs under $1,000. [If you're looking for an explanation of all those TV and tech terms, make sure to take a look at 5 Things to Consider Before Buying an HDTV]. Don't forget to check out our slideshow of additional runner-up HDTV's under $1,000 at the end.

Best HDTVs Under $1000 2

Sylvania LC195SL9
19-inch LCD TV 720p
$299.99 at Best Buy

WHAT'S A DEAL: This one has a built-in DTV antenna, which means you don't even need a cable or satellite box to get HDTV, as it'll pick up free over-the-air HD broadcasts. Since it's so small, even standard definition TV looks good on this small baby. Also, it works as a PC monitor, thanks to a PC input.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: At 19-inches, you won't really notice any of the benefits of HDTV, which probably won't matter that much anyway since it only has two high-def ready HDMI inputs.

BOTTOM LINE: This is our 19-inch budget TV of choice – perfect for the kitchen, the bedroom, small apartments, and the study (as a dual-purpose computer monitor and television).

Best HDTVs Under $1000 3

Dynex DX-LCD32-09
32-inch LCD 720p
$429.99 from Best Buy

WHAT'S A DEAL: This 32-incher from Best Buy's other house brand has some basic good features like volume leveling (so you're not hit with loud fluctuations while watching a show) and a PC input so you can use it as a computer screen.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: It's only 720p resolution and only has two HDMI inputs.

BOTTOM LINE: Dynex is Best Buy's house brand, so getting this TV is a bit like buying America's Choice brand at the supermarket. Are you into that or not? We say it's worth a shot, especially since you're getting something big enough for a rec-room or medium-sized living room for around $400.

Best HDTVs Under $1000 5

Westinghouse W2613
26-inch LCD 720p
$449.99 from Best Buy

WHAT'S A DEAL: Sexy styling, day and night settings depending on room light, energy efficient. Can be used as a computer monitor.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: Only one HDMI input; only 720p resolution; regular TV only looks so-so.

BOTTOM LINE: This 26-incher does just enough that's right to make it a decent buy for $449. It's ideal as a multi-purpose computer monitor for the study, or an extra TV in the kitchen or bedroom.

Philips 42PFL3603D
42-inch LCD 1080p
$748 at Target

WHAT'S A DEAL: Top-of-the-line 1080p resolution; sexy modern design with rounded edges; accurate color.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: The sound is lackluster, but our main beef is that all of the inputs are on the back of the unit, which means it'll be tough to hang this unit on the wall unless you feel comfortable taking it down every time you want to adjust your component configuration.

BOTTOM LINE: This TV has topnotch visuals for less than $800 and will appeal to anyone who is concerned with home aesthetics. Also, we'd only recommend it to folks with decent home theater systems, since the speakers are crap.

Holiday Gift Guide 2008

Best HDTVs Under $1000 7

LG 42LG30
42-inch LCD 720p
$799.99 at BestBuy

WHAT'S A DEAL: The sound is probably the best we've heard on all the sub-$1,000 TVs we considered. LG has done a nice job of building speakers into this thing, and it has developed something called Clear Voice, which makes it a lot easier to hear dialogue, even with lots of background noise or music in the movie you're watching.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: It's only 720p resolution – good enough for broadcast HDTV, but not quite Blu-ray resolution.

BOTTOM LINE: Perfect for anyone who doesn't have (and doesn't want) a home theater system, since the speakers are better than those on most TVs we've tried. This is the kind of TV that would work nicely in, say, the bedroom, where most folks don't have elaborate surround sound systems (at least not yet).

Best HDTVs Under $1000 8

Panasonic THC50HD18
50-inch plasma 720p
$899.99 at Costco

WHAT'S A DEAL: A whopping 50-inch flat-panel from plasma pro Panasonic for less than $1,000, generous 3 HDMI inputs, realistic color and black levels. Great for sports, since plasmas handle action scenes better than LCDs. Optimized to work easily with other Panasonic components (DVD players, Blu-ray players, A/V receivers, etc) through VIERALink.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: It's only 720p resolution, which is fine for all broadcast TV signals and most downloadable HD content (from iTunes, Xbox 360 or Vudu), but won't give you the ultimate HD quality for 1080p content such as Blu-ray discs.

BOTTOM LINE: If screen size, reliability, and accurate color and contrast is a high priority to you, you'll be plenty satisfied with this 50-inch plasma.

Holiday Gift Guide 2008

Best HDTVs Under $1000 9

Toshiba 46RV530U
46 inch LCD 1080p
$899.99 at Costco (up to $1,000 elsewhere)

WHAT'S A DEAL: It's hard to find a flat-panel LCD television this big for less than $900, so if you really don't want a plasma instead, then this is your best bet. A generous four HDMI inputs means you'll be able to hook up plenty of HD sources, from your Xbox 360 and Apple TV to your Blu-ray player and cable box. Also, black levels are surprisingly black for a "bargain" LCD.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: Doesn't have a ton of extra features (no memory card slot, for example) and doesn't play all that well with other components like DVD players or receivers -- even ones made by Toshiba. The result? You'll still need a separate remote control for each device in your home theater set up.

BOTTOM LINE: You can get a bigger, better plasma for the same price, but if you're stuck on LCD, this is one of the best bangs for your buck (especially since it lists for about $1700!). If you're okay with something slightly smaller, we'd recommend Toshiba's 37-inch 37AV52U, which we've seen for $649.99. It's only at 720p set, but at less than 42-inches diagonally across, it makes it tough to actually notice.

Best HDTVs Under $1000 10

Sanyo DP50747
50-inch plasma 720p
$948 at Walmart

WHAT'S A DEAL: Big size, small price; high 8000:1 contrast ratio; built-in Dolby Digital Surround Sound.

WHAT'S THE CATCH: It's only 720p, which will disappoint Blu-ray disc lovers. It also only has three HDMI inputs (compared with the four HDMI inputs increasingly found on televisions of this size). Lastly, its generic looks are a bit depressing.

BOTTOM LINE: This is a solid, large TV for less than $1,000, but frankly, it has some serious competition these days. You'd be better off with similarly priced 1080p models from Panasonic (you'll have to keep clicking to find out the ones we mean).
