Gift Guide: NoPoPo Eco Water-Powered Flashlight Set

NoPoPo Eco Water-Powered Flashlight Set
(Gadget Head, Under $100)

Both eco-conscious and smartly-designed, the NoPoPo Eco Water-Powered Flashlight ($55) is a must-have for the gadget fiend. By sliding the cover, the unit works as both a regular flashlight and a unidirectional lantern. But what's most interesting about the flashlight are the NoPoPo batteries, which run on liquid (apparently they'll work with beer or urine when you're in a pinch, but we suggest sticking to water if you're flush) and a mixture of magnesium and carbon. Simply suck up the liquid in question with an included pipette and inject it into the batteries, which carry the same charge as regular AAs. Although the batteries can only be recharged an average of three times, the charge lasts for 10 years. Now, that's sustainable.

Gift Guide: HYmini Solar-Powered Charger

HYmini Green Charger (Earth Lover, Under $100)

Eco-conscious people, however dedicated to their ideals, enjoy the same fruits of modern technology -- smartphones, MP3 players, and digital cameras -- as the rest of us. One company has created a sustainable way to charge those gadgets using multiple renewable energy sources including wind, the sun, and even a handcrank. The HYMini Green Charger's internal 1200 mAh lithium ion battery can also be charged via wall outlet by connecting it via USB to a computer -- two not-so-green, yet effective, alternatives. It takes four hours in a wall to fully charge, but just 20 minutes in a 9mph wind is enough to take 20 digital pictures or power your iPhone for half an hour. Up to four mini solar panels can be added to catch the sun, and the pocket-sized turbine can be attached to a bicycle (or skateboard, car, etc.) to collect additional wind upwards of 40 mph. With HYmini, increased velocity equals increased power, allowing users to get outdoors and "recharge their batteries" in more ways than one.

Gift Guide: Blue Microphones Mikey

Blue Microphones Mikey (Creative, Under $100)

For those who like to get creative with sound, Blue Mikey ($79.99) is an excellent addition to your potable digital tool belt. Essentially a mic that plugs into the bottom of your iPhone or iPod, Mikey lets you capture anything from live music to lectures. You interface with the hardware as you would the iPhone's built-in mic; you can either use Apple's own voice recorder, or download some more feature-packed options as Fire and FourTrack. Since it uses your iPhone as its "computer," the Blue Mikey is infinitely smaller than most digital recorders out there (for better or worse, it's also very light). The mic is directional, and a switch on the back lets you choose between different gain levels, depending on the sound source. Field recording has never been so convenient.

Gift Guide: 'Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition'

'Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition'
(Gamer, Under $100)

When we say 'Batman: Arkham Asylum' ($89.99 for Collector's Edition, $49 standard edition, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC) is the best superhero game of all time, we mean it. Because that's what Rocksteady Studios has achieved -- a gorgeous, adult action adventure that does the Dark Knight justice. Taking place over one evening, Batman must tackle the Joker and his goons and break out of Gotham's nuthouse. Luckily for players, the journey is extremely interactive–using one's surroundings to fight is not only encouraged, it's obligatory. Drop down onto enemies from above, rig explosives to bring walls down, and crash through windows and ceilings. The cast of 'Batman: The Animated Series' provides the voice acting, with Mark Hamill memorably reprising the Joker. The Collector's Edition includes a 14-inch "Batarang," behind-the-scenes DVD, and 48-page book with notes on Arkham Asylum's inmates.

Gift Guide: Grado iGi Earphones

Grado iGi Earphones (Media Hound, Under $100)

To the audio obsessives who consider the quality of their sound gear a way of life, the mere mention of the name Grado elicits the kind of response usually reserved for Santa or, well, Steve Jobs . Since most Grado headphones are priced in the relative stratosphere, its new iGi model ($89) is a welcome entry-level sampler for the iPod generation. As with all in-ear models, they offer the side benefit of blocking out virtually all outside noise mostly because they're inserted deep into your ear canal -- like you-better-pay-for-dinner-and-a-movie-first type of intimacy. The iGi's don't compare with some of Grado's more legendary over-the-ear models, but you'd be hard-pressed to find better quality sound from such a reliable brand at anywhere near the cost.

Gift Guide: Fitbit

Fitbit
(Sports Fan, Under $100)

For the more reluctant Sports Fan just getting into fitness, or even for the calorie-counting obsessive, look no further than this unobtrusive little gadget. The Fitbit ($99) is a small clip-shaped device outfitted with a three-dimensional motion-sensor that functions as a personal wellness indicator. With the device's ability to track calories burned, steps taken, and distance traveled, a Fitbit owner can take a graphical look at how long they spend moving versus being sedentary, and how their energy intake relates to their energy expenditure. Fitbit also attaches to the owner's wrist at night, and tracks restlessness and general sleep quality. (It also boasts a long battery life, and an elegant, minimal design.) All of this information is then uploaded with the Fitbit software, so the user has instant an overall picture of their daily health. While it's not designed to track calories burned while biking, the Fitbit is perfect for motivating and reinforcing healthy, active behaviors.

Gift Guide: Wacom Bamboo Pen + Touch

Wacom Bamboo Pen + Touch (Creative, Under $100)

Wacom has long been the de facto purveyor of pen tablets for both Mac and PC, and the Bamboo Pen and Touch may be its sweetest option yet. This $99 job plugs into any computer's USB port and effectively lets your beloved creative effectively draw with a cordless, battery-free, and pressure-sensitive stylus. This plastic drawing area on this newest rendition does a great job of replicating the friction and feel of paper, while the "Touch" factor adds MacBook- and iPhone-style gesturing (two fingers down to scroll, pull apart to zoom) functionality to boot. Plus, the intuitive software and small footprint means the creative flow won't be interrupted.

Gift Guide: Keitai Wooden Speaker

Keitai Wooden Speaker (Man/Woman Who Has Everything, Under $100)

One definition of a truly great product is one that you see and instantly, absolutely, have to have it, despite never even having known you wanted it. By that standard, Ketai's stocking-stuffer is a must-have for gadget aficionados?a tiny wood-boxed speaker on a keychain for hearing tunes from a cellphone, PDA and other portables. Plug it in to share that song, video clip or voice-message with a friend when a stereo isn't at hand, and recharge it using a PC's USB port. Easy-peas-y, definitely Japanese-y.

Gift Guide: Netflix

Netflix.com
(Video Junkie, Under $100)

The premiere DVD rental-by-mail service has gotten so tempting it's bordering on the criminally insanely awesome. Netflix fans?and they are legion?already love that they can create a wish-list queue of movies and TV shows online, and then have them arrive a day or two later in their mailbox for to watch (or horde, as the case may be) at their leisure with no late fees (among the plans, choose to have unlimited rentals per month, with from one to three DVDs delivered to at a time). To sweeten the deal, Netflix has also thrown in unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows too, watchable on a PC or Mac as well as a handful of settop devices. The only thing left for them to do is start writing doctor's notes to give our boss, so we can spend our days catching up on all the movies we've ever missed.

Price: $84 (for 6-month, 2 DVDs at-at-time gift certificate)

Gift Guide: Plant Sense EasyBloom

Plant Sense EasyBloom
(Domestic God/Goddess, under $100)

Bringing green thumbs into the digital age, the EasyBloom is a nifty device that tells users both what may be ailing with their plants, and what other vegetation they should consider. To diagnose underperforming greenery, put the EasyBloom in Monitor mode, stab it into the ground nearby and leave it there for 24 hours. Then plug it into the USB port of your PC and it'll check with home base and offer a diagnosis. When planning a new garden, repeat the same procedure in Recommend mode and it'll suggest plants that should thrive in your particular soil. Short of highering a private groundskeeper, gardening has never been easier.

Gift Guide: iCarly Digital Camcorder

iCarly Digital Camcorder (Kids, under $100)

You could let your kid run around the house with your fancy camcorder to capture those precious moments, like when they squash a bug or jump off the garage roof. But doubtless it'll end in tears (for you) and some serious quiet corner time for them while you pick up the pieces of your precious Canon. The iCarly is a kid-friendly camcorder, which means it's not only easy to use, but more than capable of forgiving a few bumps and bruises. It records up to 100 minutes of admittedly low-quality video, and has an SD card slot for bumping that up. Since it records AVI files it'll work with both PCs or Macs and also comes with AV cables for hooking up to the TV for home movie night.

Gift Guide: Fallout 3 Collector's Edition

Fallout 3 Collector's Edition
(Gamer, Under $100)

Nothing says "I love you" like the gift of post-apoctalyptic adventure. Available for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, 'Fallout 3' takes the open-world exploration of Bethesda's last award-winning title ('The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion'), and brings it into an expansive, creepy future chock full of frighteningly realistic AI and equally impressive HD graphics. The collector's edition includes a hardcover art book, a making-of DVD, and more. For those with slightly lighter tastes, 'Fable 2' makes a great alternative (assuming the giftee owns an Xbox 360).

Gift Guide: Mohpie Juicepack

Mophie Juicepack
(Traveler, Under $100)

While the iPhone 3G is unarguably a great piece of technology, it has one fatal flaw: horrible battery life. Enter the savior: plug it into your standard iPhone charger, and Mophie's Juicepack holds an additional 28 hours of audio playback, eight hours of video playback, and six hours of 3G talk/data time (these are best case numbers). You can leave it in your bag, and then plug the iPhone into it when it's running low on juice. (If they'd rather have a battery pack that stays on the iPhone, incase's Power Slider is a great option as well.)

Gift Guide: Wacom Bamboo Fun

Wacom Bamboo Fun (Creative, Under $100)

There are few more useful tools for the digital artist than a Wacom tablet. As anyone who has attempted to draw onscreen with a mouse is well aware, it's virtually impossible: tablets let artists go to town just as they would with a pen and paper, but with all the digital tools in the world at their disposal. While Wacom makes a wide range of tablets (professional versions can cost in the thousands of dollars), the Bamboo Fun is a great way to draw (or touch up digital photos) on your computer.

Gift Guide: Aiaiai Y-Com/Y-Model Earbuds

Aiaiai Y-Com/Y-Model Earbuds
(Music Lover, Under $100)

While there are seemingly as many headphones out there as there are heads, few compare to the Y-Com from Aiaiai. Available in a host of subtle color combos and in both iPhone and iPhone 3G versions (the latter is called the Y-Model), they're full of design tweaks: the Y-shaped plastic bit and thicker cords prevent tangled wires, and the inline mic (complete with button) makes sure you're not giving up any of Apple's functionality. They sound great, and come with three sets of earbuds -- both silicone and foam, depending on your ears' preference.
