'Arkeg' Cabinet Perfects Arcades and Ale

It's a combination that surely could only come from the hand of God: beer and arcade games. No, this isn't a joke or a dream. Someone really has created this heavenly contraption.

According to Uncrate, the Arkeg Drink n Game is an arcade cabinet that holds a five-gallon keg and comes with 69 classic arcade games -- from 'Asteroids' to 'Mortal Kombat II.' (This Internet- and iPod-ready machine can handle thousands of additional games.) It's like Budweiser and Ms. Pac Man had a baby. As if it couldn't get any better, the cabinet also features a 24-inch screen, a 2.1 sound system, two joysticks, and a trackball. Sure, $4,000 for the Arkeg may be high, but this is one gaming system that no beer-swilling gamer will regret buying.

Gamers Game for Life, Report Suggests

Once a gamer, always a gamer. That's right, you'll be blasting noobs on 'Halo' or banging on those 'Rock Band' drums till the day you die, at least according to a recent report from the Entertainment Merchants Association.

The 2009 Annual Report on the Home Entertainment Industry states, "Older gamers continue to be engaged by video games, rather than dropping out and being replaced by a new generation." While the EMA didn't offer any numbers to back up this finding, it did say that 68-percent of all households in America play video games. So, it's safe to expect there's some grandmas and grandpas included in this number. This news comes on the heels of a recent Nielsen study that found more people are playing now more than ever, despite the recession.

Mass appeal titles, like 'Guitar Hero' and 'Wii Fit,' have certainly helped push video games into the mainstream. We admit we'd rathe get pwn3d in 'Halo' by a grandpa with years of fragging experience than some punk 8-year-old hopped up on soda and candy. [From Industry Gamers, via Joystiq]

Recession Trend: Video Gamers Playing More Than Ever

Gamers might be a little lighter in their wallets these days, but that's not stopping them from playing till their fingers fall off. Not only are gamers spending more time in front of the television, they're getting more bang for their buck, too.

A recent Nielsen study, called 'The Value Gamer: Play and Purchase Behavior in a Recession,' found that the number of hours people have spent playing video games this year is higher than ever before. Starting in 2007, this trend, says Nielsen, might have even been accelerated by the recession because people are looking to get the most out of games they've purchased. Also, the study suggests that the rise of games with plenty of mainstream appeal (e.g. 'Guitar Hero' and 'Wii Fit') has contributed to this increase -- more people using games as a means of social interaction.

What's Your Biggest Video Game Win? (We Asked These Pro Players.)

Just as there's plenty of video-game-induced damage, there are also plenty of glorious wins. We know it's not the point, but then again, when it comes to video games, winning is kind of all the matters, right? Especially when professional gamers (as in, folks who work in the electronic entertainment industry) are involved. Last week's 'Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles was the perfect place to ask professional gamers about biggest wins. Take a peek at the above video for some exhilarating, and hilarious, victory tales.

GamerGrub: Performance Eats for Gamers

GamerGrub: Performance Eats for Gamers

At this year's E3 we saw a press release we just couldn't ignore: food specifically designed for gamers. It not only advertises that it'll let players eat quickly without getting greasy, crumby fingers, but that it'll also boost their performance. Did it live up to its claims? Did it really leave our hands clean? And, more importantly, how does it taste? Read on to find out.

Weed Weakens Wii-manship, Say Feds

Above the Influence, an arm of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, has launched a Web page informing gamers that only n00bs smoke doobs, a move that seems to be in line with the Federal government's grand old tradition of being "down with the kids,"

According to the site, which we learned about from Business Insider, smoking marijuana can impair gaming judgment and, ultimately, cause death. Well, the death of an avatar, anyway. On the site, one female game character seductively tells of her formerly successful relationship with a gamer named Lyle. Her voice sweetly lilts as she remembers his "skill" and "swiftness," and then turns flippant as she recalls his sudden turn towards the weed, and away from gaming glory.

So, listen up, kids. Above the Influence wants you to know that, if you start smoking weed, your sexy video game character of choice will fall out of love with you.

Wait, what? Are they high, or something? [From: Above The Influence Via: Business Insider]

Video Gamers Are Among the Least Shy, Study Says

Get that image of all gamers as over-weight, hermit-like, dorks living in their parents' basement out of you head. Turns out most people who qualify as gaming addicts don't fit that stereotype at all.

According to an Australian study, 15-percent of adults qualify as problem gamers (those who spend 50 hours or more a week playing video games). Of that 15-percent, however, only one percent were identified as having poor social skills. In particular, the study was looking for signs of shyness or low self-esteem, but these two characteristics seem unassociated with the amount of gaming a person does.

The study also found that those who had a preoccupation with gaming -- an inability to stop playing to the point of affecting sleep, work, and personal relationships -- were more likely to play massively multi-player online games, such as World of Warcraft or Ultima Online. [Source: Reuters]

Greatest Hits In Gamer Fashions

Greatest Hits in Gamer FashionsThink video gamers, and you probably don't think high fashion. Most gamer garb is more low maintenance than haute couture, but there are a few exceptions, as highlighted at Asylum's list of greatest gaming fashions. Some are cool, like a 'Space Invaders' jacket, or the Mario-themed scarf. Others, though, are questionable at best, like the NES controller belt-buckle or, worst of all, a pair of boots with an old-school GameBoy Color built-in.

However, the list sadly ignores our personal favorite, the Burton Asteroids snowboarding jacket, which is not only geeky, but also quite functional and stylish. [Source: Asylum]

Halo Mimobots

For those among us with a severe case of Halo 3-itis (which seems to be about seven trillion and counting), the new limited-edition Halo Mimobots ($55-$115) make a great stocking stuffer. These USB Flash drives come in sizes ranging from 1-gigabyte (GB) – 4-gigabytes (GB), and you have your choice of either Master Chief (pictured), or blue or red Spartans. They come preloaded with a bunch of Halo content, including the mimobot soundByte™ application (featuring Halo sound effects), artwork, excerpts from the upcoming Halo novel, and a special episode of 'This Spartan Life.' Uber-fans can even stick them into the front USB ports of their limited-ish edition Halo 3 Xbox 360 to impress -- uh, themselves? And maybe their friends. But not their girlfriend. Really.
