Victorian-Era Gadgets on Display at London Museum

Victorian Era Gadgets on Display
It's always fun to look back to see the "cutting edge" of technology from eras past. If you're in London, you'll have to stop by the British Library Business and Intellectual Property Centre, where a collection of Victorian era gadgets has gone on display.

Some of the gadgets are terribly unsophisticated precursors to modern must-haves, such as the wrist-watch-styled GPS ancestor with scrolling mini-maps. Some are ingenious Mouse Trap style doodads, like the alarm clock and steam-powered tea brewer. Others -- we're thinking of the eye-ball massager -- are just plain frightening.

If you can't make it to London for the exhibit, head on over to the Daily Mail for some highlights from the collection. [From: Daily Mail]

Iraqi Artist Wants to be Shot

Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal wants you to shoot him.

That's right. Bilal has locked himself in a studio outfitted with live Web cams for the entire month of May, and is allowing site visitors to not only spy on him 24 hours a day, but to also shoot at him with a remote-controlled paintball gun.

The online art installation 'Domestic Tension' can also be seen in real life at Chicago's flatfile gallery. It's the latest from Bilal who strives in his work to transform "the normally passive experience of viewing art into an active participation." The piece/performance is intended to raise awareness about the home confinement Iraqis face due to the violent war happening in their front yards.

We sincerely hope site visitors appreciate Bilal's message and aren't there to simply . . . well . . . shoot an Iraqi.

The Sims Receives the High Art Treatment

Sims in the Hands of Artists'The Sims' is now the latest crossover from the world of video games to the world of high art. Like the I am 8-Bit exhibition, The Sims: In the Hands of Artists takes a fresh look at the world of popular video games and how we relate to them. It's part art exhibit, part student art competition (with a $12,000 grand prize for the best entry), and part multimedia extravaganza.

The exhibit runs at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York from April 19 - May 12 and features art in various media that blends the video game world and reality. Real world scenes are punctured by Sims-styled thought bubbles or rendered to look like characters from the games. There are movies made in 'The Sims' game and even paintings and drawings that explore different aspects of 'The Sims' world and its connections to reality.
