Autofetch Ball: Next Generation of Animal Torture?

There's delayed gratification. And then there's delayed gratification. The former can be good. The latter? Excruciating. Just ask the unfortunate canines who are tormented by the newest doggie tech-toy.

The Autofetch Motion Pet Ball is a robo-ball that uses an internal auto-motion gyroscope to jump around. The point? You don't have to risk tearing a rotator cuff by throwing a tennis ball to your dog 1,500 times in a row. The catch? It's hell for your dog. See, the lackadaisical energy-efficient pet owner is supposed to put some sort of treat inside the ball, meaning that the dog can smell the delicious biscuit, or beef jerky, or whatever, inside. He'll just never be able to catch the damn ball.

Controller-Chewing Dog Spends Money on Xbox Live

When you adopt a dog, you expect to drop some cash on things like food, visits to the vet, and maybe chew toys. But one man's best friend drained his bank account in an unexpected way.

According to Kotaku, a man named Greg says his one-year-old dog, Oscar, purchased 5,000 points on his Xbox Live account, totaling $62.50, while the owner slept in the next room. Somehow, the lab/hound mix (pictured above) managed to spend the money simply by chewing on the plastic controller. Greg says he woke up the next morning to read an e-mail confirming his purchase. After initially being angry, he just laughed it off. Instead of pleading with Microsoft for a refund, he just decided to purchase some new video games and a replacement controller with the points.

South Korea Clones Drug-Sniffing Dogs

While Kim Jong-il continues to lead North Korea like a hyperactive preschooler whose parents can't find his Ritalin, South Korea is knocking off designer handbags, churning out electronics like nobody's business, and now, according to USA Today, using cloned, drug-sniffing dogs to patrol its airports.

Unlike the U.S. (where German Shepherds get to sniff all the drugs), South Korea has put six genetic duplicates of a highly capable Labrador Retriever to work at three customs checkpoints -- not including the one at Incheon, the country's primary international airport. The Korea Customs Service says that using clones could help reduce costs when it comes to finding capable drug-sniffing dogs; only an approximate three of 10 naturally born, agency-trained dogs are up to snuff.

Doggy Dating Sites Flooding India's Internet

Here in the States, we've got our fair share of pet-related social networking sites (DoggySpace, Fuzzspace, and countless others). So far, these seem to be good enough for us. In India, however, netgoers apparently can't get enough of social networks and online dating for dogs, according to Reuters.

DogMateOnline.com, which launched back in 2008, faces competition from sites like the two-year-old PuppyLove.in and the brand new dateyourpet.co.in. These sites are helping dog owners in India find mates for their furry friends and, in turn, find some companionship themselves. Mumbai-based Mekhala Lobo, founder of Date Your Pet and an MBA student, told Reuters, "Believe me, in the dog world, finding a mate is next to impossible."

Japanese Dog Translator Turns Owners Into Dr. Dolittle

Japanese toy manufacturers are known for developing awesomely bizarre and outlandish creations. One such company, Takara Tomy, recently unveiled its updated BowLingual Voice gadget, which supposedly translates exactly what your barking pet pooch is trying to communicate.

According to Ubergizmo, Takara Tomy asserts that the device, which is worn like a collar, can accurately translate barks into 100 different Japanese words. Older versions of BowLingual (and Meowlingual) have been around for several years, but only acted as emotional analyzers, translating barks or meows into one of six different emotions that was then displayed on a hand-held wireless device.

Mini Camera Offers Dog's Eye View of World

Ever wonder what the world would look like through the eyes of a dog? Probably full of doggie rear-ends, water bowls, and human legs, we would speculate. But pet-lovers need guess no more; curious owners can now find out for sure with the help of the Pet's Eye View Camera.

Boing Boing Gadgets tested out the tiny round camera, which snaps onto the collar. The $39.99 petcam can be set to take 640 by 480 pixel photos every one, five, or 15 minutes, and it stores up to 40 photos on an 8-megabyte memory card. After five or six hours, the camera automatically erases the card so more photos can be taken.

After a test run with a couple small dogs, Boing Boing reported a few complaints with the gadget -- namely, the product's lack of blur reduction and motion sensors. We checked out the photos, which were mostly just blurry shots of the ground, and agree. We wouldn't be too pleased to pay $40 for a bunch of photos that look like the work of a dog on a four-day bender. Similarly, 8 megabytes? In a time when gigabytes of storage can be purchased for well under $20, 8 megabytes of storage is incredibly small.

You'd think that the folks at Uncle Milton, who doubtless have the money and time to appropriately refine the camera, would be able to come up with something as good as, if not better than, amateur enthusiasts Michael and Deidre Cross. But, for our money, the Crosses' DIY pet camera, and their kitty Cooper, easily walk away with the blue ribbon. [From: Uncle Milton and Boing Boing Gadgets]

Dog Sniffs Out 35,000 Pirated DVDs

The most powerful weapon to have recently emerged against the high-tech, big-money industry of DVD piracy comes in an unlikely package: knee-high, four-legged, and covered with black hair.

Wednesday, according to the AFP, the worldwide arm of the Motion Picture Association of America (called, simply, the Motion Picture Association) announced that 35,000 pirated discs had recently been located in several Malaysian warehouses -- by none other than a black lab named Paddy. Trained to sniff out chemicals integral to the bootleg discs, Paddy was given to the Malaysian government by the trade association, itself. Thanks to the dog's nuanced sense of smell, Malaysia's ministry of trade and consumer affairs was able to shut down the six different warehouses in possession of the pirated goods. The Motion Picture Association, which has reported that the companies it represents lost a total of $6.1 billion to pirates in 2005, is of course quite pleased with the work of its canine cop.

On top of being a curse to pirates everywhere, ol' Paddy must be a pretty tough film critic, to boot. After all, to him, pretty much every movie stinks. [From: Yahoo/AFP]

Dog-o-Matic, a Washing Machine -- for Your Pooch

If you're interested in completely losing your dog's trust and possibly ruining your chances of a happy afterlife, you can't do much better than the Dog-o-Matic, the newest product from French entrepreneur and part-time sadist Romain Jarry.

Here's how it works: stick your dirty dog into the oversized capsule, swipe your credit card (it costs $47 for the full package wash), and wait for the whimpering to begin.

Philly Police Dog Sniffs Out Prison Cell Phones

Dogs may be known as man's best friend, but one dog in particular is making life difficult for would-be cell phone smugglers incarcerated in Philadelphia prisons.

Bomber, a 60-pound Belgian Malinois, is a specially trained pooch tasked with detecting smuggled cell phones in prisons. Since January, Bomber has sniffed out 10 phones while patrolling Philly's six prisons -- to put his success in perspective, that's more than all of Pennsylvania's two-legged guards found last year in the state's entire prison system.

When it comes to detecting contraband, the disparity between canine and man was summed up by Sgt. William Finn, who told Philly.com, "A dog has more than 220 million olfactory receptors in its nose. Humans have only five million." We don't disagree, but we can't imagine the guards were using their noses to find the phones.

New GPS Collar Lets You Track Your Lost or Stolen Pet

New Collar Will Track Your Lost or Stolen DogStrapping a GPS tracker to a dog is nothing new, but British start up company Retrieva is offering a smaller and much more feature-packed version that in better economic times might have become quite a hit.

Unlike earlier models, which were so large they needed to strapped to a dog's back, the new GPS collar is worn, well... as a collar around the neck. The collar is waterproof, made of cut-resistant webbing, and has a key-lock mechanism to make it all but indestructible and impossible to remove by anyone but the dogs owner.

The collar uses a built-in cellular radio to send text message alerts if your dog wanders beyond a programable distance from the base station. The unit then sends constant updates about its location, which can be viewed on either a mobile phone or on downloadable mapping software.

This is great for someone who has a dog that tends to wander off or escape on a regular basis. Unfortunately, at £250 (about $370) it's probably only going to make it on the shopping list of the most paranoid dog lovers. [From: Daily Mail]

Dog Gets $18K Bionic Leg

Dog Gets $10,000 Bionic Leg
We understand that dog is supposed to man's best friend, but we couldn't possibly imagine dropping nearly 20 grand on a bionic leg for one of our beloved pups. Don't get us wrong, we love our canine companions, but we could buy a pretty nice car or dig ourselves out of credit card debt with that kinda cash.

We assume that Reg Walker has money to spare since he spent £10,000 (a little more than $18,000) to fit his eight-and-a-half-year-old American Bulldog, Coal, with a specially-designed prosthetic limb. What makes the implant unique is that the titanium alloy used mimics animal hide, so the skin and bone will grow and seal the prosthetic to Coal's body.

The successful surgery means that Coal can return to his normal place by his owners side. "He goes everywhere with me - he goes on tour, he's the only dog to have allowed into Live 8 and the only dog that has ever been backstage at the Royal Albert Hall," Walker said.

That's one lucky dog! [From: Daily Mail]

Dog Swallows Owner's Cell Phone -- Whole

Dumb Dog Swallows Cell Phone
People love to talk about how smart their dogs are. They'll tell you about how Fido can identify their car just from the sound of the engine, that he knows when he has done something wrong and that he'll punish himself, or that he can do so many amazing tricks. The sad truth of the matter, however, is that dogs are stupid. Adorable? Sure. Friendly? Sometimes. But smart? Not so much.

Take the case of Nero, a Doberman-Great Dane mix, from Valhalla, South Africa, who got himself into a little hot water when he swallowed his owner's cell phone. Driekie Boojens, daughter of the dog's owner Marie Matthews, was feeding Nero when he snatched the woman's Nokia handset right out of her daughter's hands and swallowed it whole.

Nero was rushed to the local animal hospital and had surgery the next day to remove the phone. While they were in there, vets also found a small collection of rocks in the dog's stomach. More evidence of the intelligence of our canine friends.

Nero is fine now. The twelve-year-old mutt has a large scar on his abdomen, but is otherwise healthy. The Nokia on the other hand, had to be put down. Nero's stomach acid simply proved to be too much for it to handle. [From: Telegraph]

Computers, MySpace

DoggySpace: Facebook for Dogs

DoggySpace: Social Networking for Dogs
To some this may seem ridiculous, but to those who have spent large swaths of time on MySpace keeping profiles for their beloved canine companions, DoggySpace makes perfect sense.

DoggySpace is exactly what you think it is, a social networking Web site just for dogs. As is the case with any good social networking site, DoggySpace allows users to create unique profiles for their animals to share pictures and videos in addition to making "friends."

DoggySpace may only have 700 currently registered users, but it is nevertheless part of a larger trend towards narrowly focused social networking sites. While general sites like Facebook and MySpace are servicing the younger crowds and generally replacing e-mail, other sites are popping up with singular focuses like nostalgia and alien encounters. A service called Ning even lets users create their own social networking sites to service small communities.

So while Facebook and MySpace try to become everything to everyone, it seems there exists another trend towards creating smaller, more specialized networks -- even David Hasselhoff is getting into it. What's next? Facebook for Pet Rocks? [Source: Newsvine]

Electronic Nose Could Put Sniffer Dogs Out of Business

the look

Scientists are developing an electronic nose that could be used in a myriad of situations to detect drugs, bombs and other nasty stuff. The invention could spell the end for sniffer dogs, who may become obsolete once this flashy new technology hits the market.

The electronic nose, or 'doggy dream killer,' as we like to call it, will be able to sense a "smell at extremely low concentrations ranging from parts per billion to parts per trillion and will be able to detect dozens of different odors." The nose will be made up of a thin film formed out of zeolite, which is a substance used in petroleum refinement. The film will capture gas molecules, (which create smell) and that information will be processed by sensors and computer software to identify just what the smell is.

Sure, it can do all that, but can it pee on the lethal substance once it detects it?

We thought not! [Source: CNN]
