Jay Leno Drives Chevy Volt, and He Likes It

Jay Leno loves cars and owns over 80 of them. When he voices an opinion on the matter, we tend to listen, so it was good to hear him talk about the much-hyped Chevrolet Volt.

Leno, who performed a free comedy show at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit this past Monday, also got a chance to test drive the Volt. After his visit, Leno had this to say to the Detroit News about the floundering auto company: "GM's not bankrupt yet! I was there today actually, [sic] I saw a lot of good product." The tone invoked by Leno is not surprising. Even before Leno's trip to Detroit, AutoBlogGreen found him lavishing praise on GM's new green car, saying, "I think it will be great. I think you'll find that the Volt will be a superior package to the Prius."

Let's hope he's right. In a sense, the Chevy Volt is an automotive symbol of renewed American intentions and ambitions. We would hate to be disappointed. [From: The Detroit News Via: AutoBlogGreen]

'Car and Driver' Apologizes for Obama/NASCAR Hoax

We've heard it said that you can't trust everything you read on the Internet, and that's especially true on April 1st.

In the last few years, the Web has taken April Fool's Day to new heights, with everybody from Qualcomm to Google, from Cash4Gold to The Guardian, getting in on the mischief. Although most Web pranks are regarded as harmless fun, the wheel-mag Car and Driver backfired yesterday when it "reported" that President Obama had banned Chevrolet and Dodge from participating in the 2009 NASCAR season.

The flash of anger and dissent from Obama detractors and NASCAR fans alike was strong enough to force Car & Driver to pull the article and apologize for having a sense of humor. The apology wasn't enough for Dodge, apparently, whose motor sports public relations lackey Denny Darnell told USA Today: "I've been in this business more than 30 years and have never seen a story so irresponsible."

We think that everybody ought to lighten up and be glad that there's still some journalistic mirth out there. After all, with venerable news outlets dropping like flies, the journalism industry is in no better shape than the auto industry. As showcased by the Car and Driver crew, at least some of us still laugh about it. [From: USA Today]

Should We Be Open-Sourcing Detroit?

Soon-to-be president Barack Obama was on 'Meet the Press' Sunday, and made the point that any bailout of the US auto industry would include specific requirements about what sort of vehicles they would produce.

That's cool and all, but Earth2Tech's Kevin Kelleher has tackled the subject of taking things a bit further, namely the notion of a "'Manhattan Project' for Detroit" of open source, cross-company research and development. The idea was first brought up by Chad Holliday, CEO of DuPont, who asked for:

"[A] new-generation car as very safe and environmentally sensitive, perhaps using solar cells. The $5-billion project would be paid for through the public sale of bonds and would be operated on a tight timeline. It would involve the best scientists and engineers from the Detroit auto companies as well as Microsoft, Intel, Google, Boeing and DuPont."

The idea was later brought to Washington by Representative Ron Klein, who suggested a shared "knowledge base and innovations, among all automakers" -- the open-source twist," if you will.

Call it the "Detroit Project," call it the "Motor City Project," call it "Save the Whales." Whatever. Just call it. [From: BoingBoing]

Detroit Mayor Caught Sending Explicit Text Messages

Detroit Mayor Caught Sending Explicit Text MessagesWhen you're caught red handed, there's nothing to do but beg forgiveness. And that's exactly what Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit was forced to do last night in a televised plea. The mayor is under investigation over claims that he lied under oath about having an affair with his chief of staff Christine Beatty.

Mayor Kilpatrick went into hiding last week after a Detroit news paper reported that sexually explicit text messages had been found on Beatty's cell phone dating from 2002 and 2003. In the 10 minute address, Kirlpatrick apologized for the pain and disappointment he caused his family and supporters, but rejected suggestions that he should resign over the pending perjury investigation.

Christine Beatty has resigned over the text messaging scandal, but we're wondering what possessed her to hold on to the text messages for 6 years.

Kilpatrick and Beatty aren't the only unfortunate souls to run into some trouble on account of text messages, here are some of our favorite embarrassing text message stories:

  • Australian Cricket star Shane Warne learned the hard way that he should double check who he's texting after accidentally sending a message intended for his mistress to his wife. Lets just say it doesn't have a happy ending.
  • A teacher in Texas thought that involving text messaging in her lessons would be a good way to keep her class engaged. Unfortunately some the text message abbreviations assigned were not exactly kid friendly.
  • One young man in Cincinnati paid the ultimate price when he got so distracted by texting he we has struck and killed by a train.
  • One apparently desperate, or stupid, West Virginia drug dealer texted a police officer to see if he wanted to "buy some reefer." As you can guess his days on the outside were numbered.
