Controversial Tweets Testing Limits of Free Speech

What separates Twitter from other social networking sites has always been its trademark brevity. Restricted to 140 characters, users are forced to be concise and truncate their thoughts, opinions, or news. As is often the case, though, pithiness comes at the expense of nuance, subtlety or sarcastic intonation, leaving tweets open to wide and varied interpretation. When the tweeter has some particularly strong opinions to get off his or her chest, feelings get hurt and, in some high-profile instances, lawsuits (and confusion) unfurl.

Courtney Love, for one, was recently sued by designer Dawn Simorangkir over a series of especially caustic tweets the singer posted. After having argued with Simorangkir over the price of vintage costumes, Love went on her own "Tweet Offensive," calling the fashionista a liar and a thief. Simorangkir sued Love for libel in March, according to the New York Times.

Proposed Twitter Reality Show Scaring Off Celebrity Twitterers?

Twitter's agreement to appear in a future reality show may cost the microblogging site its most popular celebrity advocate. News of Twitter's partnership with Reveille and Brillstein Entertainment groups was met with instant consternation from the Ashton Kutcher clan, including his wife Demi Moore. Both threatened to take a tweeting time-out, which would surely devastate Kutcher's Twitter-leading, 2 million-strong cult of tweetees.

Kutcher believes the proposed show, which would "put ordinary people on the trail of celebrities," would be a sell-out and would also lead to celebrity stalking. (What, Martha Stewart tweeting wasn't a sufficient sell-out warning?) Twitter co-founder Biz Stone countered with "Twitter's open approach might have the power to transform television." Yeah, but what will we all do without Ashton's enthralling, slice-of-life gems (like, "on lunch break")? We guess we'll have to be content reading White House updates on the new Supreme Court nominee, viewing playoff highlights courtesy of the NBA, and enjoying the comedic tweeting genius of Rainn Wilson, aka The Office's Dwight. Facebook/Twitter Preventing Suicides, Demi Moore Gets Credit

Social Networking Tools Used to Prevent Suicides Around the World, Demi Moore Claims Credit

Clearly, there is something wrong out there. And we're not talking about the fact that the new installment in the street racing movie series 'Fast and Furious' raked in $72.5 million over the weekend.

Flighty media types have gone celebrity-Twitter-crazy, and have gotten so wrapped up in the new, of-the-moment social networking service that they haven't even paused to make sure whether or not what they're reporting is newsworthy, or even true.

Take, for example the widely reported story of Demi Moore responding via Twitter to a woman who had threatened, in a tweet, to kill herself. The New York Daily News ran the tale under the headline, "Demi Moore uses her Twitter to help stop woman's suicide attempt." On the scale of truthiness, that falls squarely in the "two plus two is five" range.

Twitter Is Your Backstage Pass to the Oscars, and Beyond

Twitter is Your Backstage Pass

If you're like most movie fans, you spent your Sunday night glued to the television watching award after award get handed out between endless strings of montages. But, a growing number of online fans used the social service Twitter to get a glimpse behind the scenes, thanks to a number of celebrity tweeters.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore (known as Mr. and Mrs. Kutcher to Twitter fans) were some of the most prolific Twitter users at the Oscars, providing almost constant textual updates during the show itself. Highlights included Demi's saying "So excited my pal Penelope won!!!" and Ashton's posting a number of pictures and even one grainy video of after-show parties. But they're certainly not the only tweeters in celeb-land. As we've said in the past, everyone from Britney Spears to Barack Obama are posting their hearts out, giving fans quick updates on what's going on as it happens. So who needs shady celebrity tracking blogs and magazines when you can get the quick and dirty straight from the horses' mouths? [From: The New York Times]
