Infectious Now Offering Seriously Cool iPhone Art

Looking for something a bit more distinctive to decorate your iPhone than a sports team logo or rubberized case? If so, you're in luck, because Infectious.com just launched its iPhone art store online. The site offers exclusive laptop, car, wall, and now iPhone art created by real artists, many with actual street cred!

The 'art' is made of adhesive vinyl that sticks onto the back of your iPhone. Yes, you're probably thinking, what if I need to take if off? No problem, the sticker peels off easily without leaving any sticky residue on your iPhone, and it can even be reused, which makes it feasible to buy a few of these things. At only $9.99 a pop, it makes a great stocking stuffer or Secret Snowflake gift, or a pretty inexpensive way to add some distinctive flavor to the increasingly ubiquitous, non-unique iPhone.

To see more, check out some of our favorite designs in the slideshow below, or head on over to the Infectious Web site.

Andy Miller's (of Manchester, UK) work has a heavy emphasis on unique illustration. Where do the ideas come from? Miller says, "I usually get a lot of my inspiration from my bizarre dreams, they range from being part of the cast of Seinfeld to billy goats running around on rooftops."

Gift Tip: iFrogz Custom Headphones for iPhone/iPod

If there's anyone who's raking in the iPhone cash besides Apple, it's the third-party accessory makers. From cases to speakers to, um, telescopes, there is no shortage of add-ons to tailor your iPhone to whatever your needs may be. ifrogz, a fairly well-known Apple accessory and custom-skin maker, hopes to take things to another level, though, with its customizable iPhone/iPod EarPollution headphones.

Starting with your choice of base headphone, you can then customize the color of the bands, side pieces, speakers, and cushions. Then, if you're feeling especially perky, ifrogz allows you to choose from one of a wide assortment of art patterns that overlay the outside shell of the headphones. Of course, if you choose the earbuds as a base, your customization options are more limited.

While the selection of prints isn't too shabby, letting people use their own photos for designs the way Pure Digital's Flip cameras do would surely broaden the headphones' appeal. Our only other issue? There doesn't appear to be a built-in mic or remote on any of the headphones, once again limiting the headphones' appeal, especially to iPhone users. Then again, even Apple's own headphones with mic and remote don't completely support the iPhone (the volume buttons won't work), so maybe the point is moot... [From: Walyou]

Dell Debuts Design-Your-Own-Laptop Studio

It was HP who made the PC "personal again," but don't think Dell isn't doing its darnedest to make it ultra-personal... again. After seeing a number of Dell laptops get unorthodox paint jobs and hearing that it would make Art House machines CTO in 2009, we've now learned that Dell has swung open the doors to its all new Design Studio. Naturally, said studio was built to customize the outfit's Studio 15 and Studio 17 lappies, and it features an interactive gallery of original artwork commissioned exclusively for this initiative. Available for browsing right now, each unique image costs $75 to have "permanently tattooed into the laptop lid," meaning that you better heart that design a whole lot before pulling the final trigger.

Google Rolls Out 'Themes' for Gmail

Google Rolls Out Themes for Gmail
Google is certainly not a company satisfied to leave a product well enough alone. Gmail, the already hugely popular free online e-mail service, has seen a number of upgrades in the past few weeks. First, it was integrated text messaging, then came easy to use video chat, and now Google is releasing a series of themes to make your Gmailing experience a little more aesthetically pleasing.

Google enabled people to apply custom themes to the Google.com search page many months ago, and since then, a variety of colorful and fanciful styles have been added to let you personalize your search. It's similar here, with Gmail starting with 30+ themes that range from wood-grained to modern and sophisticated. To enable a theme, click on the "Settings" link at the top of the page and click on "Themes." Don't see the link yet? Fear not; Google's doing their typical thing of rolling it out slowly -- it should be there in a few days.

And why is the company being so generous with the feature upgrades lately? Maybe they're still trying to make up for that painful downtime... [From: The Official Gmail Blog]

Paper Shredder Roundup 2008

Someone here at the Switched has a bit of an obsession, if you hadn't noticed yet. We just can't help but cover every novelty or development in the world of paper shredders. Sadly there was nothing as powerful as this $30,000 shredder on display at CES, but there were a few noteworthy entries into the world of document destruction.

Whether they were pretty, paranoid or just plain weird, they made it to our Class of 2008: Paper Shredders Edition gallery. Check it out.

Graffiti-Splotched Gadgets All the Rage In 2008

Sure, iPods are cool, but they're just not the status symbol they once were, and there's nothing cool about having sleekest slimmest laptop on the market if everyone else has one, too.

Companies are realizing this and know that people, especially fiercely independent Americans, have a need to be different. So, as a way to make their products stand out (and their customers feel a little more unique), consumer electronics producers have taken to decorating many of their goods with graffiti and modern-art inspired graphics, intricate etchings, vaguely Japanese designs, and yes, even leather.

We wandered around CES and snapped pictures of some of the coolest examples of decorative electronics and customization options available to try and make you the consumer feel a little less like just part of the herd.

Customize YouTube Player to You

Customizable YouTube Players: Finally!
Embedded YouTube players are those ubiquitous bastions of crappy camera work and pre-teens lip-syncing to pop hits. Embedding on your own Web site allows you to display any content available on YouTube without the burden of having to host it yourself. Sure they're functional, but not very fun. Same gray and red color scheme, same YouTube layout and related videos.

Rejoice: YouTube has heard the MySpace crowd's cries to be able to alter everything with garish colors and self references. The new customizable embedded player from YouTube lets you name and describe your own player, choose from nine different color schemes, pick either classic layout, or a layout with related videos on the right (pictured), and the content, which can be your own videos, a custom playlist or your favorites.
