Best Buy Snaps Up 17 CompUSA Leases

Apparently, not only is CompUSA rising from the dead like a horrific, zombified corpse, but now its guts are getting bought up and replaced by another retail behemoth. According to reports, Best Buy has just paid $13.5 million for 17 CompUSA store leases, ranging in time from three to 14 years and totaling 453,000 square feet. If the nightmare of CompUSA wasn't enough to haunt you in your sleep, the news that its now-defunct locations will be replaced with essentially more of the same should shake you to your very core. We imagine the Best Buy victory rap will be making the rounds again, you can jog your memory after the break. [Source: Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal]

CompUSA's Final Hours

CompUSA's Final HoursCompUSA is in its final throes of going out of business. Shelves are nearly empty, discounts are approaching the 70% mark, and the "All Sales Are Final!" signs are out in force. So, if you're looking for a bargain, you'd better get to your local outlet now. Just don't go expecting much help, as the Consumerist has found that most CompUSA employees are quite content to ignore you while whittling away their last obligations at the company playing video games.

CompUSA was about the only national retail chain out there that sold nearly every piece of computer hardware you could want, from CPU fans to power supplies. With it gone (or mostly gone, a handful of locations will stay open), it'll be even harder for do-it-yourselfers to make quick, emergency repairs to their computers without having to pay for overnight shipping from some website. But, given CompUSA wasn't exactly full of bargains in the first place, it may not make much of a difference. Perhaps that had something to do with its downfall ...
