The Web is teeming with the unrealized ideas of both students and established designers who set out to produce astonishing renderings and prototypes for unusual products. Unfortunately, due to the lack of time, money, or technology, many of those products never progress from the planning stages to the mass market. But that doesn't mean we can't salivate over them, nevertheless.

As you unwrap that pair of too-small neon Crocs from your loving and soused uncle this Christmas morning, think about the work that went into their design. Indeed, even our most hideous footwear requires imagination. However, thanks to a lack of self-restraint, creativity can quickly veer from fashion-forward to freakishly fugly. But maybe you'll think the 3-D printed shoes we discovered should head to the garbage, and that Crocs are tops. Or maybe they'll even become the new Crocs. Ponder that, dear readers, as you sip on eggnog and explore the rest of this week's designs after the break.
Continue reading The Week in Design: Cornstarch Earbuds and 3-D Printed Shoes

The Week in Design: Cornstarch Earbuds and 3-D Printed Shoes originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 14:05:00 EST. RSS's demise is being touted around the blogosphere again this month, but, frankly, we can't live without really simple syndication. Yes, iPad apps like 'Flipboard' and 'Twitter' are innovative in their abilities to make sense of what your friends are sharing on social networks, but, for our money, there's nothing quite like the dopamine-addled, mouth-to-the-firehose thrill of loading up a couple hundred RSS feeds and plunging through thousands of unread news items, blog posts and images. Whether you're a politics junkie, sports fanatic, celebrity news addict or are simply looking for more customization, a mobile RSS reader is essential for staying connected.

Google Reader has long been one of the best Web-based feedreaders, but Google Reader's excellent mobile version still lags behind dedicated apps with its lack of sharing options, offline reading features and speed. Assuming you're using a Google Reader account to keep your feeds organized and synced across multiple computers and mobile devices, you need look no further than 'Reeder' on the iPhone.
I recently moved apartments, and was startled to discover that I get little to no cell phone signal in my new pad, which obviously sucks. Calls drop or don't come through, and my phone chews through the battery. To make a call I have to go on my roof or across the street. Short of switching to a new service provider, which I don't want to do, I've read there are gadgets that may help, but I have no idea if they work. I don't know what to do, so just tell me what to get!

Dear Reader:

Pardon the pun, but your complaint about a lack of wireless signal seems to be in the air these days -- a Harris Interactive survey found that 67-percent of U.S. mobile owners complain they have reception problems at home. In the early days of cell phones, this lapse of coverage may have been more forgivable since service plans cost less and most of us primarily used landline phones for calls from home. That has obviously changed, and the good news is that service providers are belatedly and cautiously owning up to the failings by offering a solution: femtocells!
Continue reading Femtocells Can Help You Get a Better Cell Phone Signal at Home

Femtocells Can Help You Get a Better Cell Phone Signal at Home originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 15:00:00 EST. It may not be Halloween yet, but that doesn't mean we can't spend some time haunting and hunting amongst the monsters and the freaks. This week, we'll find out why sandworms are the new zombies (and why zombies aren't quite played out yet), we'll try to survive on desert islands (without the aid of any soccer ball companions), we'll turn slack-jawed yokels into canned food, and we'll delve into gaming madness with the Panopea generosa (i.e., the King Clam, one of the strangest game protagonists we've ever encountered). All for free, and all at your desk. You're welcome.
Continue reading Games on the Go: Zombies, Aliens and Monsters...
