'Faith Fighter' Game Taken Offline Due to Muslim Group's Protest

According to Yahoo Tech, 'Faith Fighter,' the popular Internet game that pitted religious deities against one another in battle, was taken offline by its creators on Tuesday after a prominent Muslim organization protested.

The game, which debuted in 2008, has been played by millions of people and has offended that many folks several times over. In an interview with the AFP posted on Yahoo Tech, a spokesman for the Organisation of the Islamic Conference's Islamophobia Observatory described the game as "incendiary in its content and offensive to Muslims and Christians."

NYC Church Twitters the Passion Story

Many in the media and on the Web seem to think that Twitter has already jumped the shark. Although coverage has been a little on the annoying side (we're being generous here), it hasn't been so bad that we haven't been ready to declare the microblogging service officially over until right now.

At noon today, the famous Trinity Church on Wall Street will use everyone's new favorite social networking site to tell the Passion story, which details the suffering of Jesus leading to his Crucifixion. You have seen Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' right?. The Passion play will be sent to phones and computers around the city, country, and probably the world, in 140 character bursts. For three hours, the faithful (or merely curious) can take part by following twspassionplay on Twitter.

Apparently as the play progresses, followers will receive messages from the story's main characters, which is -- to be honest -- more than just a little bit creepy. We don't want people who have been dead for a few thousand years to start Tweeting us. It's a little spooky. [From: Huffington Post and Trinity Church]

Faithful Are Giving Up Facebook for Lent

Parents Giving Up Facebook for LentAlright Christians and Catholics, you know what time it is. It's Lent time!

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season, which, for the uninitiated out there, is a period of fasting and sacrifice meant to remind the faithful of the 40 days and nights Jesus spent wandering in the desert. Usually, practitioners choose one vice or habit to give up for the 40 days, such as chocolate, smoking, and, yes, Facebook as a lead up to the Easter holiday.

According to the Wall Street Journal, many adults and parents are taking it upon themselves to give up their social networking addictions for 40 days this year. What started with college kids has spread to adults who feel their online lives are affecting their real world responsibilities. People like Kevin Shine, a 39-year-old electrical contractor who updates his Facebook status 20 times a day, feel that this abstention is important to reclaiming an offline life, the article says. Most disturbing to us is the image of somebody staying up until midnight on Fat Tuesday, furiously updating their Facebook status. The worst Mardi Gras ever.

For our part, we can tell you that no one in the Switched offices will be making a similar sacrifice; we're weak. [From: Wall Street Journal]

Would you give up Facebook for 40 days?

'Guitar Praise' Lets You Jam to Jesus

Rock Out With Your Cock Out... For Jesus!
We're not exactly sure why those crazy Christians need to make Jesus-centric versions of everything in sight. Talking Jesus Dolls; preachy, porno-free YouTube clones; cross shaped music players; they just can't leave anything alone.

So it came as no surprise when we heard the people who thought 'Dance Dance Revolution' wasn't godly enough were releasing 'Guitar Praise: Solid Rock.' We're pretty sure you can guess what it is, but let us spell it out for you: 'Guitar Praise' is a 'Guitar Hero' clone, filled with (wait for it...) Christian rock tunes. Hallelujah!

As if 'Guitar Hero' wasn't frustrating enough before now you can try and jam along with songs from bands you've never heard of, like Skillet, Day of Fire, and Family Force 5.

$99.95 nets you the PC and Mac compatible game along with a plastic wireless guitar controller, and of course eternal salvation. [From: Boing Boing]

Christian YouTube Is the Fastest-Growing Site on the 'Net

It seems like every day brings the launch of a new YouTube knockoff that offers fancy integrated video players and the ability to upload user-created content. Few of these upstarts seem to have a chance compared to Google's juggernaut ... except for the porn-focused ones, of course, which seem to be doing quite well. Conversely, a Christian-focused alternative is also finding quite a bit of success by letting believers strut their faith for all the Web to see.

GodTube was launched last January by Chris Wyatt, a former producer for CBS. It mostly offers user-generated Christian programming, like a number of parodies of popular songs re-written to include Christian overtones, (some funny, some not) and, of course, plenty of preaching. Much of the site's content is a little more controversial, however, including a number of videos attacking Mormonism and one in which an atheist holds a Christian at gunpoint and asks him to die for his faith.

So, perhaps not everyone can appreciate the content, but surely everyone can appreciate the traffic. In August GodTube was the fastest growing Web site on the 'Net according to comScore, an Internet marketing company. GodTube tauts 1.6 million unique visitors a month, an impressive figure for an upstart, but not quite a threat to YouTube's stats yet, estimated to be somewhere around 50 million per month.
